Who Will Be More Likely to Ghost You?

Who Will Be More Likely to Ghost You?

Source: Eugene Partyzan / Shutterstock Ghosting, where one person just completely breaks contact with another, in addition to unfollowing them on all social media platforms, is becoming a more and more common way to terminate a romantic relationship. Ghosting gets around some of the difficult issues associated with relationship dissolution, such as tricky conversations and having to justify one’s decision. Given that ghosting is clearly a less sensitive and considerate method of relationship termination, we may wonder whether some people are more likely to ghost than others. For instance, there may be some personality characteristics that may be related to ghosting, such as those characterised by the Dark Triad. Generally, such people lack any feeling for those they are ghosting and may even have only been motivated to seek a relationship in the first place for the purpose of casual sex. Individuals characterised by the Dark Triad traits of psychopathy lack empathy and are emotionally cold. Those who are narcissistic are characterised by grandiosity, while Machiavellian individuals may see ghosting as a pragmatic tactic consistent …

Supreme Court to decide if Biden administration can regulate ‘ghost guns’

Supreme Court to decide if Biden administration can regulate ‘ghost guns’

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to consider whether the Biden administration can lawfully regulate so-called ghost guns — firearms that are made from kits available online that people can assemble at home. The justices took up a Biden administration appeal in defense of regulations that a lower court invalidated. The provisions in question are currently in effect while litigation continues. In August of last year, the Supreme Court allowed the regulation to be enforced on a 5-4 vote, with Chief Justice John Roberts and fellow conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett joining the three liberal justices in the majority. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, commonly known as ATF, issued the regulations in 2022 to tackle what it claims has been an abrupt increase in the availability of ghost guns. The guns are difficult for law enforcement to trace, with the administration calling them a major threat to public safety. The rule clarified that the parts used to make ghost guns fit within the definition of “firearm” under the federal …

Everyday Philosophy: “Is it OK to ghost the people you date?”

Everyday Philosophy: “Is it OK to ghost the people you date?”

“I recently met a guy on a dating app and we went on a few dates. He was nice enough, and there were no red flags, but after the fourth date, I could tell things weren’t clicking, at least for me. Last week, he sent me a text inviting me to a group outing to meet some of his friends. I didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything and decided to ghost him. I’m feeling guilty and conflicted. I’ve been ghosted before, and I know how it feels. It felt awful. Is it ever OK to ghost somebody who really did nothing wrong?” — Emily, California Ghosting was only added to the dictionary four years ago. If you asked your grandma if she’s ever ghosted a boy, she’ll likely look at you sideways. Ghosting might seem like a modern phenomenon but it’s probably only as old as awkward breakups. Emily doesn’t text back, but Georgina in the 16th century didn’t return letters, and Sibi the Babylonian stonemason moved villages to avoid a …

Network of ‘ghost roads’ paves the way for levelling Asia-Pacific rainforests | Deforestation

Network of ‘ghost roads’ paves the way for levelling Asia-Pacific rainforests | Deforestation

A vast network of undocumented “ghost roads” is pushing into the world’s untouched rainforests and driving their destruction in the Asia-Pacific region, a new study has found. By using Google Earth to map tropical forests on Borneo, Sumatra and New Guinea islands, researchers from James Cook University in Australia documented 1.37 m kilometres (850,000 miles) of roads across 1.4m sq kilometres of rainforest on the islands – between three and seven times what is officially recorded on road databases. These ghost roads, which include bulldozed tracks through natural rainforest and informal roads on palm-oil plantations, were “almost always” an indicator of future destruction of nearby rainforests, according to the study published in the journal Nature. They are “among the gravest of all direct threats to tropical forests”, the researchers concluded. “They’re being constructed by a range of people, including legal or illegal agriculturalists, miners, loggers, land grabbers, land speculators and drug traffickers,” said Prof Bill Laurance, a co-author of the study. “By sharply increasing access to formerly remote natural areas, unregulated road development is triggering dramatic …

Off-Broadway Satire ‘Ghost of John McCain’ Is ‘Trash’

The talent behind the upcoming musical The Ghost of John McCain should not save a front row seat at its premiere for the late senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, as the former cohost of The View and outspoken pundit took to Twitter this week to denounce the forthcoming off-Broadway show, slam its producers and wish it has no success whatsoever. On Wednesday, it was announced that the show is slated for a fall premiere at New York’s Soho Playhouse. The self-described “serious and satirical musical” was written by Scott Elmegreen with music and lyrics by Drew Fornarola, and its producers include political strategist Jason Rose and Max Fose, a former McCain campaign consultant. “This is trash,” McCain wrote of the musical, adding that it’s, “Nothing more than a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people…I hope it bombs.” McCain, who in 2017 brought the perspective of a staunch conservative and pre-Trump Republican to her co-hosting duties at The View until departing in 2021, has crusaded for her late father’s legacy. It is unclear if she has …

A Ghost Ship’s Doomed Journey Through the Gate of Tears

A Ghost Ship’s Doomed Journey Through the Gate of Tears

The ballistic missile hit the Rubymar on the evening of February 18. For months, the cargo ship had been shuttling around the Arabian Sea, uneventfully calling at local ports. But now, taking on water in the bottleneck of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, its two dozen crew issued an urgent call for help and prepared to abandon ship. Over the next two weeks—while the crew were ashore—the “ghost ship” took on a life of its own. Carried by currents and pushed along by the wind, the 17-meter-long, 27-meter-wide Rubymar drifted approximately 30 nautical miles north, where it finally sank—becoming the most high-profile wreckage during a months-long barrage of missiles and drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The attacks have upended global shipping. But the Rubymar wasn’t the only casualty. During its final journey, three internet cables laid on the seafloor in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait were damaged. The drop in connectivity impacted millions of people, from nearby East Africa to thousands of miles away in Vietnam. It’s believed the ship’s trailing anchor may have broken the …

Ghost ride the whip! Geely shows off fully-autonomous drifting

Ghost ride the whip! Geely shows off fully-autonomous drifting

While many are still skeptical about the plausibility of 100% autonomous vehicles, Geely Auto is showing that its new AI digital chassis can not only safely operate on snow and ice without a driver but can also pull off fully autonomous drifting. See the EV in action in the video below. Geely Auto operates as the primary marque auto brand under the larger umbrella of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. Aside from its own branded EVs, the Chinese automaker owns stakes in plenty of other notable brands we often cover on Electrek, including ZEEKR, Volvo, Lotus, and Polestar. With a knack for advanced automotive technology and nearly forty years of experience in scaled manufacturing, Geely is a notable name in the global EV landscape, pushing the boundaries of what mobility means. That said, Geely has tended to keep its cards close to its chest in recent years and is not usually one to flex its technology too much publicly. Today is an exception as the auto conglomerate is showcasing its new AI digital chassis, …
