Mya-Rose Craig calls for penguins to be freed from ‘terrible life of captivity’ | UK | News

As a conservationist and advocate for animal welfare, I firmly believe that every creature deserves to live in conditions that reflect their natural habitat. The recent outcry over the captivity of 15 Gentoo Penguins at London’s Sea Life Aquarium underscores the urgent need for a re-evaluation of how we treat animals in captivity.  Having witnessed the majesty of Gentoo Penguins in their natural environment during my travels to Antarctica when I was 13, I can confirm the stark contrast between their vibrant, dynamic lives in the wild where they live in huge colonies and the reputedly confined conditions they endure in captivity in London.  These intelligent and social creatures belong in the vast expanses of the ocean and the ice packs alongside, not in a cramped enclosure where their natural behaviours are stifled. While I do not oppose the concept of zoos and aquariums outright, I firmly believe that if they are to exist, they have a responsibility to provide suitable conditions for the animals under their care with strategic plans to find suitable homes …

Campaigners demand penguins be freed from ‘windowless’ aquarium enclosure | UK | News

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition to free penguins held in a “windowless box” since the Express highlighted their plight. Freedom forAnimals activists are demanding the release of the 15 Gentoo penguins from a basement enclosure at Sea Life London aquarium. Yesterday they protested outside the tourist attraction, which insists the birds “are content”. But Isobel McNally, campaigns officer at the charity, said: “The public reaction since we launched our campaign has been overwhelmingly supportive. It really is simple – they don’t belong in a tiny windowless box. “Penguins deserve daylight, fresh air, and ample space to dive and swim. Everyone from expert biologists to the general public, can see how unethical this ‘attraction’ is. “It’s time Sea Life and Merlin Entertainments saw it too.” The campaign has gained momentum since the Express first reported on the issue last week. Merlin Entertainments, which owns the aquarium, threatened us with legal action for saying the penguins are “captive”. Sea Life said if the penguins were outside they would be at risk of pollution and …

Sea Life London Aquarium threatens legal action for saying penguins are ‘captive’ | UK | News

If the Covid-19 pandemic taught us anything, it’s that being isolated and homebound, no matter how nice the accommodations, is no way to live.  I’ve studied gentoo penguins in Antarctica and in captivity for decades and know firsthand that penguins in the wild live extraordinarily rich lives, foraging for prey up to 20 kilometers a day across the open ocean and returning each night to a wild cacophony of life at the colony.  They have elaborate mating displays and complex social behaviors on land and at sea.  But visitors to the Sea Life London Aquarium, or any other captive environment, will never see these behaviors.  Gentoo penguins in captivity swim in desperate circles, vocalize only rarely, and display few of the complex social interactions of their wild counterparts.  Most cruelly of all, penguins in captivity show all the biomarkers of illness and old age, even as their protected environment keeps them alive in solitude and suffering for decades. And to what end?  So kids (who don’t know any better) and their parents (who should) can …
