Sweden votes on controversial gender reassignment law

Sweden votes on controversial gender reassignment law

Sweden was the first country to introduce legal gender reassignment in 1972, but a proposal to lower the minimum age from 18 to 16 to be voted on by parliament Wednesday has sparked controversy. Issued on: 17/04/2024 – 04:31 3 min The debate has also weakened conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s standing, after he admitted to caving into pressure from party members on the issue. Beyond lowering the age, the proposals also aim to make it simpler for a person to change their legal gender.  “The process today is very long, it can take up to seven years to change your legal gender in Sweden,” Peter Sidlund Ponkala, president of the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights (RFSL), told AFP. Under the proposal, two new laws would replace the current legislation: one regulating surgical procedures to change gender, and one regulating the administrative procedure to change legal gender in the official register. If parliament adopts the bill as expected on Wednesday, people will be able to change their legal gender …

JK Rowling reported to police by trans activist India Willoughby for misgendering

JK Rowling reported to police by trans activist India Willoughby for misgendering

JK Rowling called India Willoughby a ‘man’ on social media – Bruce Glikas/Gareth Cattermole JK Rowling has been reported to the police by trans broadcaster India Willoughby over “misgendering” on social media. The Harry Potter author became embroiled in an online row with India Willoughby, in which she referred to the transgender newsreader, Loose Women host and former Big Brother contestant as a “man” and with “he” pronouns. Willoughby, who was born male and underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2015, made a complaint to police over Rowling’s posts on X, formerly Twitter, claiming she had “definitely committed a crime”. The broadcaster, who holds a gender recognition certificate, claimed to be “legally a woman”, although Rowling pointed out there was no law which compelled her to “pretend” that Willoughby was a woman. Northumbria Police confirmed that it had received a complaint and said it was waiting to speak to Willoughby further. Downing Street declined to comment on the specifics of the dispute, but pointed to comments from Rishi Sunak in which the Prime Minister said “definitions …

Trump’s Plan to Police Gender

Trump’s Plan to Police Gender

His campaign is promising a more repressive and dangerous America. Matt Huynh December 7, 2023, 6 AM ET Editor’s Note: This article is part of “If Trump Wins,” a project considering what Donald Trump might do if reelected in 2024. After decades of gains in public acceptance, the LGBTQ community is confronting a climate in which political leaders are once again calling them weirdos and predators. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate the parents of transgender children; Governor Ron DeSantis has tried to purge Florida classrooms of books that acknowledge the reality that some people aren’t straight or cisgender; Missouri has imposed rules that limit access to gender-affirming care for trans people of all ages. Donald Trump is promising to nationalize such efforts. He doesn’t just want to surveil, miseducate, and repress children who are exploring their emerging identities. He wants to interfere in the private lives of millions of adults, revoking freedoms that any pluralistic society should protect. Explore the January/February 2024 Issue Check out …

Will Republicans Pay a Price for Extremism?

Will Republicans Pay a Price for Extremism?

As president, Donald Trump imposed an array of deeply divisive immigration restrictions on both Latinos and Muslims. And yet from 2016 to 2020, he increased his share of the vote among both groups. Even some Latino and Muslim voters who opposed Trump’s immigration agenda moved to support him anyway because of his record on other issues, particularly the economy and conservative social priorities. Now Trump and several of his rivals for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination are doubling down on the bet that they can target each group with harsh immigration policies without paying an electoral price. For months, they have proposed an escalating succession of hard-line measures aimed at deterring mostly Latino undocumented migrants from crossing the southern border. And following the Hamas terror attack on Israel earlier this month, they rolled out a wave of exclusionary proposals aimed at Muslims. Trump has pledged that, if returned to the White House, he will restore his travel ban on people from a number of majority-Muslim nations, expand ideological screening of all potential immigrants to ensure …

The data represent the composition of The Atlantic’s staff as of June 30, 2023. We have committed to run and release this report annually. It outlines actions we have taken and will be taking within our community as part of this ongoing commitment. We are mindful that the data in this report do not include every measure of identity (e.g., sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, military service, faith).
