The government is “gaslighting” the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday. Rachel Reeves is set to attack the Conservatives in a speech in the City of London, as the opposition takes the fight to the government on their own turf ahead of the general election. The term gaslighting refers to a process of manipulating someone by questioning their memory and purposefully saying what they believe to be true is not – it also involves challenging someone’s perception of reality. Not only is the financial regulator waging war against Ethereum, he claims, but making a grab for jurisdiction over the future of the Internet. So Lubin has decided to punch back. In 2015, Lubin was part of the team that created Ethereum, the computer network home to the world’s second largest cryptocurrency, known as ETH. Later that year, Lubin founded Consensys, with the loose ambition to support the development and adoption of Ethereum and built software products on top of the network. In April, Consensys received an unwelcome missive—known as a Wells Notice—from the SEC, informing the company that it was about to be sued. The regulator’s grievance, Consensys was told, had to do with one of the software products in its stable: MetaMask, a crypto wallet that lets users store crypto coins and interact with Ethereum-based apps. The study also found gender differences, with men generally more accepting of these tactics, a trend significantly influenced by primary psychopathy and vulnerable narcissism. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation where one person sows seeds of doubt in a victim, making them question their own memory, perception, or sanity. The term originates from the 1938 play “Gas Light” where a husband manipulates small elements of his wife’s environment and insists that his wife is mistaken or misremembering when she points out these changes. This kind of manipulation can make the victim feel confused, anxious, and powerless. This study aimed to identify the personality traits that correlate with the acceptance of gaslighting tactics, thereby providing insights into who might be more likely to employ these tactics in intimate relationships. In my experience, understanding the intentions behind communication is the marker of whether someone is gaslighting you or not. The desire to resolve conflicts and honestly disagree is another clear indicator of whether the other party intends to humiliate and dominate someone or whether they want to connect with a person genuinely.
