Neil Gaiman Officially Taken to Court for…Very Bad Stuff.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Neil Gaiman Officially Taken to Court Scarlett Pavlovich, who was a central figure in Lila Shapiro’s shattering story on Neil Gaiman, officially sued Gaiman in the Western District Court of U.S., claiming rape and human trafficking. Amanda Palmer was also accused of human trafficking in the filing. This is a civil suit not a criminal one (inidividuals of course cannot file ) criminal charges, and in civil court the standard of guilt is somewhat different. So in this example, a jury is instructed to convict if they believe “the preponderance of the evidence” shows that the accused did whatever it was they are accused of. Often this is described as a 51% chance that they did it, which is quite a bit lower than “beyond a reasonable doubt.” I have now read Shapiro’s piece, and I will say that even before people are under oath and discovery and the whole machinery of the legal process …

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Where is Publishing’s Response to the Neil Gaiman Allegations? On Monday, New York Magazine revealed this week’s cover story: Lila Shapiro’s deeply reported investigation into sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman. It’s a piece months in the making—news first broke of the allegations last July—and which many of us in publishing had been waiting for. Gaiman issued a response on his blog yesterday, which several of his accusers described as, “the same non-apology that women in this situation have seen so many times before.” This morning, the NYT‘s Elisabeth Egan and Alexandra Alter reported on the allegations and Gaiman’s response and noted that, “While some of Gaiman’s television and film projects were dropped following the initial allegations, the responses from his publishers, agents and professional collaborators have been far more subdued.” “Subdued” is a generous description. Mainstream publications including The …

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. ‘Good Omens’ Season 3 to Consist of One 90-Minute Episode, Neil Gaiman Not Involved in Production Season Three was already slated to be the last for Good Omens even before was accused by several women of sexual misconduct. Why not just….not do this? Or go the other way: does a full-season without Gaiman, and I should say be loud about that fact if you do it, really have worse optics than this? Or perhaps this is what they could negotiate their way out of with all the parties involved. This single-episode vestigial weirdness seems like the worst of both worlds: neither a cord-cutting nor a moving on. United for Libraries and Penguin Random House Grants to U.S. Rural and Small Libraries After being perhaps slower than you might hope, PRH continues to launch projects that are directly or …

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. ‘Good Omens’: Production Paused On Amazon Drama From Neil Gaiman Good Omens, both the show and the book, is a crown-jewel in the Gaiman-verse. And so news that that season three of the show has shut down amidst mounting accusations against Gaiman are a sign that not only is this story not going away, but rather snow-balling. This Deadline piece notes that “changes to production” are being discussed to get rolling again. Take Gaiman’s name off as whatever he is being credit as for it? Some sort of PR campaign? The series has really turned into a Sheen-Tennant showcase more than a Gaiman project (we are well beyond the events in the book at this point), so maybe there is enough non-Gaiman here for the series to continue.
