Now there are creases that curvefrom the flanges of my noseto the scissure of my lips. And a deep cleft, like somethingleft by a hatchet, above the bridge of my nose. The brusque, impersonal obstinacy of aging. Weeding around the bushes in frontof our house, I breathe in the slightly licoricescent of rotting leaves. Though it’s twilight, down the street I hearworkers with their tree chipper coming nearer. In the glimmer and darkfallingafterglow, my small exuberanceshive in me like worms in a cadaver. I’ll just sleep for a whilewith these stones over my eyes. Don’t turn away or you’ll lose me. But there you go anyway, drifting outin the saline backwash of dream. Source link

Desert Visions | Forrest Gander

I was born or given to the light, as the largely Hispanic townspeople would say, in the impoverished desert municipality of Barstow, California. My mother, Ruth, was young and inexperienced; her marriage was already flaking away. I was her practice child, and she did things with me that in retrospect, she said, horrified her, although I suspect she was also secretly proud of the way we had managed. Sometimes she would put me in my playpen and take long morning walks in the desert with our border collie, which at least once saved her from the fat desert sidewinders that hunt in sandy washes before the onslaught of afternoon heat. My mother was an amateur naturalist. It was a vocation stimulated by her poetry-spouting father, a Swedish immigrant with a passion for bird-watching. On her rambles through the nearby Rainbow Basin, a site of torqued rock formations, multicolored strata, and canyons, she kept her eyes peeled. She made lists of flowers as well as birds, and she picked up fossils, including a piece of petrified …

My heart goes out to all who have suffered a similar loss, and to anyone who has lost a loved one. ” … It’s heartbreaking, and it’s just damn hard. CSI, Forrest Gump actor Gary Sinise’s son Mac dead at 33 – tragic cause of death revealed

Gary Sinise and his family are mourning the loss of his beloved son McCanna Sinise, who has passed away aged 33. The CSI: New York actor’s official foundation shared the announcement Tuesday afternoon, revealing that McCanna, who was nicknamed Mac, died on January 5 of this year after a five-and-a-half year battle with Chordoma, a rare form of bone cancer that largely impacts the skull and spine. ‘Dutch Forrest Gump’s’ Journey Across America for Men’s Mental Health

The walk is part of the #BraveMenTalk campaign which aims to raise awareness about male mental health globally and raise funds for charities. (CREDIT: Anton Nootenboom) Anton Nootenboom, also known as “The Barefoot Dutchman” on social media, is not your typical record holder. In 2019, he achieved a remarkable feat by completing the 80-mile round-trip hike to Mount Everest Base Camp without wearing any shoes. Two years later, in 2021, he set a Guinness World Record for the longest barefoot journey by trekking 1,875 miles along the Australian coast. Now, he has set his sights on breaking his own record by embarking on a 3,000-mile barefoot walk from Los Angeles to New York City. Describing his journey as “crazy,” Nootenboom began his expedition on February 17. He humorously likened himself to the character Forrest Gump, as over 30 people joined him for the first mile of his trek in Santa Monica, Calif. This walk is part of the #BraveMenTalk campaign, in collaboration with Barebarics barefoot shoes, which aims to raise awareness about male mental health …

Citizen Scientist Forrest Mims Tells His Remarkable Life Story

Forrest M. Mims III (1944–) has so many accomplishments in science and electronics — with little formal training — that they would make your head spin. Getting Started in Electronics, originally written for RadioShack (now the Source), is one of dozens of electronics books Mims has produced over the years, sold more than 1.3 million copies. Introducing his autobiography, Maverick Scientist: My Adventures as an Amateur Scientist (Make Community, LLC, April 2024), the publisher notes, At thirteen he invented a new method of rocket control. At seventeen he designed and built an analog computer that could translate Russian into English and that the Smithsonian collected as an example of an early hobby computer. While majoring in government at Texas A&M University, Forrest created a hand-held, radar-like device to help guide the blind. And during his military service, he had to be given special clearance to do top secret laser research at the Air Force Weapons Lab. Why? Because while he lacked the required engineering degree, they wanted his outside-the-box thinking on the project. That Scientific …
