The Alito flag scandal and the supreme court’s ethics problem – podcast | Politics

Reports surfaced a few weeks ago that the supreme court justice Samuel Alito had flown an upside-down US flag outside his home days after insurrectionists flew similar flags when they stormed the Capitol on 6 January 2021. Alito has blamed his wife, saying he wanted her to take down the flag down after a dispute with neighbours. Democrats want Alito to recuse himself from any supreme court case involving 6 January, but he has refused to do so. Jonathan Freedland speaks to Amanda Marcotte of Salon about whether this latest scandal is proof that the supreme court is incapable of being unbiased How to listen to podcasts: everything you need to know Source link

Aliza Shatzman Aliza Shatzman is devoting herself to giving judges a hard time. She spends a lot of time fielding complaints from law clerks, who tell her stories about bullying, gender discrimination and harassment. She said those complaints come from mostly young law school graduates at the start of their careers who have few places to turn inside the federal judiciary to report their concerns anonymously. That’s why she’s created a database to gather such stories and warn students about hostile situations, before it’s too late. “The judiciary needs some more people to poke at it,” Shatzman said. “There are far too many judges who are mistreating their clerks …

Grace College professor ousted after online commentators flag ‘woke’ social media posts

(RNS) — With glowing performance reviews and above-average student evaluations, by most measures Matthew Warner’s first year as a communications professor at Grace College was a triumph. But he spent most of that first year knowing it could be his last. After four months on the job, Warner was informed by the school’s president, Drew Flamm, that the board had “come to the conclusion that we don’t think it works out to move forward,” according to a recording obtained by Religion News Service. Warner’s termination is the latest in a string professor terminations at Christian colleges seemingly tied to clashes over narrowing and often unspoken political and theological criteria. While Flamm didn’t specify the reasons for Warner’s dismissal, it was preceded by an online termination campaign clear about its goals. Launched by conservative influencers and Grace College stakeholders, the campaign demanded Warner’s removal due to his social media posts about LGBTQ rights, Black Lives Matter and critiques of the GOP. Almost all the posts predated Warner’s employment at the college.   Grace College declined to …

Trump posts campaign ad praising UNC students holding up US flag during campus protest

Former President Trump posted a campaign ad on his Truth Social site praising various counter protestors on college campuses, including students who held up the U.S. flag. “While campuses struggle to get control of their students, at UNC Chapel Hill, they are bringing order back,” the video begins. The ad shows clips of pro-Palestinian students protesting across the country. It then shows photos and videos of students at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill who held up the American flag at their campus’ demonstration. Members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity were seen in viral posts holding up an American flag while activists threw items at them. The incident occurred Tuesday, when pro-Palestinian supporters replaced the American flag with a Palestinian flag. The scene resonated with people across the country, and a GoFundMe was set up to throw the fraternity “a Rager.” It’s raised over $500,000 so far, including a $10,000 donation from billionaire investor Bill Ackman. The ad continued, splicing together news segments from Fox News and “Primetime with Jesse Watters,” where they …

Why the far side of the moon is the chequered flag of space race 2.0 | Science & Tech News

The far side of the moon is rugged and mysterious. Always hidden from Earth, it wasn’t until the space probe Luna 3 took the first pictures in 1959 that we got to see its mountains and deep craters. And 65 years on, we still don’t know much about it. That’s why China’s Chang’e 6 mission is so exciting. It aims to visit the same area near the south pole visited by its predecessor Chang’e 4 in 2019. But this time the goal is to bring back a sample of the lunar surface, the first from the far side. The intended destination is the Aitken basin, a 2,500km-wide impact crater, one of the oldest in the solar system. It’s so big there are smaller craters within it, a time capsule of asteroid activity going back billions of years. Finding mission Scientists will hope to work out how long ago the craters were formed. According to one theory the inner solar system was battered by wave after wave of asteroids just under 4 million years ago. Image: …

Chicago Cubs pitcher forced to change glove because American flag patch was considered a distraction

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs reliever Luke Little said he had to change his glove before he entered Wednesday night’s 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros because of an American flag patch. Manager Craig Counsell went to insert Little with one out in the seventh inning. But as the 6-foot-8 left-hander went through the usual check by umpires for pitchers coming into the game, he was told he had to swap out his glove. “The issue was the American flag was on his glove,” Counsell said. “Pitchers’ gloves, they’re pretty strict about not having white on the pitchers’ gloves. Apparently, the flag had what could be a distraction to the hitter.” More Sports from NBC News As Little went to the mound to warm up for his ninth appearance of the season and No. 16 for his career, a clubhouse attendant went to his locker to find a replacement. The first glove he brought to Little also had an American flag patch, so he went back to get another one — which hadn’t been broken in. …

Meghan Markle warned podcast setback could see her ‘facing future red flag’ | Royal | News

Meghan Markle has encountered a significant setback with her new podcast, which one expert suggests could “become a red flag”. The Duchess of Sussex revealed her partnership with podcast network Lemonada in February, and the company has since released the first season of Archetypes. Meghan was reportedly working on a brand new series, but that has allegedly been delayed until 2025. This delay arises amid concerns of scheduling clashes with the launch of Meghan’s new lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard. PR guru Ryan McCormick has suggested this could be complicated for the former Suits actress. In an interview with The Mirror, he said: “Meghan’s new podcast delay in the wake of all the ‘phoenix rising after Spotify deal collapse’ hype is a PR disaster. According to Podcast Index, there are 4.1 million podcasts in existence today. “That means at least 4.1 million people (many of whom probably don’t have a comfortable, privileged life like an ex-royal) were able to do what Markle can’t do. “The fact that her show is apparently being pushed back to …

Russia launches ‘false flag attacks’ on huge nuclear plant | World | News

Drone attacks against the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) earlier this month were part of a “well-planned false flag operation” by Russia, Ukraine has said. Kyiv’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya told a Security Council meeting on Monday that, “What happened at the ZNPP on 7th and 9th of April 2024 and thereafter was a well-planned false flag operation by the Russian Federation.” According to reports, the nuclear facility – the largest in Europe – sustained at least three direct strikes on April 7, while another drone attack targeted the plant’s nearby training centre two days later. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) described the strikes as a “major escalation” sparking fears of a nuclear disaster. Radiation released from the plant would likely spill into NATO countries, sparking fears of World War 3. The Security Council met on Monday to discuss safety and security at the Zaporizhzhia plant, which has been occupied by Vladimir Putin’s forces since March 2022, the month after Russia’s invasion began.
