Avril Lavigne fits into her ‘Complicated’ tank top and tie 22 years later in latest photo – see here

Avril Lavigne has been in the entertainment industry for over two decades, making her splashy debut in 2002 with her song “Complicated,” and it looks like she’s still got it! The singer, now 39, shared a new series of photos on Instagram teasing something big to come very soon, and did so with a Throwback Thursday moment that hit close to home. Avril posted a photograph of herself wearing the very same white tank top with red star detailing she wore in the “Complicated” music video, paired with the same black neck tie. Where the little helicopter on Mars fits in the history of aviation

Where the little helicopter on Mars fits in the history of aviation

Mars is a graveyard for explorers. Many orbiters, landers, rovers, and other mechanical critters that have either been cremated in the Red Planet’s thin atmosphere or fallen silent in the ochre, radiation-smothered sands below, right away or at the end of their technological lifespans. Many belonged to NASA, and the mantra of their droids seems to be: If you’re going to die, you might overachieve before you go. These robots—the ones that survived their interplanetary journey and arrival intact—all had clear scientific or technological objectives to accomplish before their mechanisms seized up, or their power sources ran dry, perhaps when their solar panels became fully coated in fine dust. But from the late-1990s Mars Pathfinder and the early-2000s Spirit and Opportunity rovers, to the 2010s Curiosity wanderer and the contemporary InSight geophysical mission (which perished in late 2022), so many of them blew right past their mission timelines and operated for months or even years beyond what was expected. NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter—affectionately known as Ginny, the first aircraft to achieve powered and controlled flight on …

On Sunday morning’s edition (28 April) of the Channel 4 show, Lovejoy and co-host Simon Rimmer were joined by comedian and presenter Sue Perkins, singer Jess Glynne, actor Sophie Thompson, comedian Josh Widdicombe and SAS: Who Dares Wins star Jason Fox. As Rimmer prepared the morning’s first course, Lovejoy made conversation with their celebrity special guests, and began asking former soldier Fox about his recent wedding to his long-time girlfriend, Jules Hawkins. After Fox noted that he got married in London and had “tapas-y” food for the reception, Lovejoy then asked whether the newlyweds went on honeymoon. “We did, we went to Jordan,” Fox said. “It’s amazing, it’s awesome, I’d thoroughly recommend it. We went all over the country and saw lots of different sides. It doesn’t disappoint.” …

Kate Middleton’s photo editing fits in a history of royal retouching

Kate Middleton’s photo editing fits in a history of royal retouching

LONDON — Queen Victoria became slimmer. Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, lost her double chin. The Duke of Kent saw his wrinkles smoothed. The abdicating King Edward VIII lost his head. As Catherine, Princess of Wales, comes under scrutiny for altering photographs before they were released by the royal family, British historians have been offering up their favorite examples of royal portrait manipulation over the decades. This week, Getty Images said that a photograph of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reportedly taken by Catherine at Balmoral Castle in 2022, had been “digitally enhanced at source.” Among the oddities noted by British media were an apparent misalignment of the queen’s tartan skirt and signs that Prince Louis may have been moved farther back. Kensington Palace would not comment, but last week, after photo agencies retracted a photo they had distributed of Catherine and her children, the princess said she had altered it. These revelations have reverberated in a particular way because Catherine has been out of the public eye while recovering from abdominal …

How Ireland’s double referendum fits into a longer history of voting for constitutional change

How Ireland’s double referendum fits into a longer history of voting for constitutional change

The referendums taking place in Ireland on March 8 highlight the importance of language. In two votes, the public will decide whether to change the wording in the national constitution so that it no longer implies that a woman’s work is in the home and that a family is founded in marriage. The votes also highlight the potential dangers for governments that seek to amend their constitutions. While both votes look set to pass, there are questions around why, in amending the constitution, the current government hasn’t taken the opportunity to better support people who work as carers for family members – or the people they care for. Eamon de Valera, the primary creator of the 1937 constitution, would not have envisaged the majority of women working anywhere but at home. Equally, it is unsurprising that Leo Varadkar, the current Taoiseach, has been cautious in the wording his government has proposed for the most recent amendments to the constitution. There has been not been much dispute over the proposal to remove gendered language but the …

how election victory in the Netherlands for Party for Freedom fits into a wider picture of European radical-right populism

how election victory in the Netherlands for Party for Freedom fits into a wider picture of European radical-right populism

The results of the Dutch election, in which Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom emerged as victors, have sent shockwaves through the political establishment. For the first time in Dutch history, a party of the extreme right is the largest in the national parliament. Wilders is an eccentric politician known for his inflammatory rhetoric. He advocates the Netherlands leaving the European Union and has called Islam a “fascist” religion. In a 2016 trial, he was found guilty of inciting discrimination (but received no penalty for the crime). While polling leading up the election had suggested that Party for Freedom could become the largest party, it had appeared to be running practically neck and neck with the parties of the mainstream left and right. But the polls were wide of the mark and Wilders ended up taking the most seats by a comfortable margin, even if he will need to seek coalition partners to form a government. Rightwing newcomers the New Social Contract also did very well. Like Party for Freedom, this party sees immigration as one …
