GameStop subreddit fills with store closure posts as Roaring Kitty hints at new stock

GameStop subreddit fills with store closure posts as Roaring Kitty hints at new stock

Is the end nearing for GameStop? The video game retailer closed hundreds of stores right before the new year. Now, it seems even more GameStop stores will be closing as 2025 gets in full swing.  With the move to digital downloads and some video game consoles leaving physical media behind altogether, the writing has been on the wall for GameStop for a number of years. However, in 2021, the meme stock craze, led by investor Keith Gill also known as “Roaring Kitty,” gave new life to the company. But, it doesn’t appear like GameStop has been able to turn things around, at least when it comes to its retail stores. GameStop store closings Since 2020, GameStop has closed more than 700 stores. In December 2024, right before the new year, the company shuttered nearly 300 retail locations. While there has been no official announcement on the latest batch of closings, the first of 2025, local media outlets are starting to report on their local GameStop stores suddenly shuttering. For example, Michigan local news outlet MLive …

Sunak faces long goodbye as he fills in during Tory leadership contest | Conservative leadership

Little over a year ago, when Sky News’s Beth Rigby asked Rishi Sunak what it felt like to lose, he didn’t know what to say. It’s a question he will have the chance to ponder as the leader of the opposition over the next three months. Day in, day out, Sunak will be tasked with holding accountable a party and prime minister who defeated him resoundingly in July’s election. When he hands over to his successor on 2 November after an extended Conservative leadership contest, Sunak will have been leader of the opposition for 121 days, longer than any defeated prime minister since James Callaghan lost in 1979, according to analysis for the Guardian by the Institute for Government. In the decades since Callaghan, prime ministers and opposition leaders have tended to exit swiftly after defeat. John Major held the fort for 49 days after Tony Blair’s landslide victory in 1997. Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband both departed immediately after losing elections, both times handing over temporarily to Harriet Harman. The prevailing view has been …

With pilgrimages on hold, Holy Land Easter programming fills a gap

With pilgrimages on hold, Holy Land Easter programming fills a gap

(RNS) — Holy Week is typically a time when church groups flock to Israel to walk in the way of Jesus before his crucifixion in Jerusalem. But not this year. With the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, and the fierce ground assault on Gaza that has followed, most U.S. church groups are staying put. Only 23,700 Americans visited Israel in February, the last month for which data is available, according to the Israeli Bureau of Statistics. That’s down from 73,600 U.S. visitors in February 2023, a plunge of 68%. Most of those who did travel were on solidarity or volunteer missions — helping Israelis recover from the Hamas assault that killed an estimated 1,200, took 250 hostages and destroyed many of the kibbutz settlements along Israel’s border with Gaza. Among the Christians who did make the trip was the Rev. Franklin Graham, the CEO of Samaritan’s Purse. The Christian relief organization donated 22 new ambulances to Israel’s EMS fleet, known as Magen David Adom. While in Jerusalem this past January, Graham taped a …

The Biden Campaign Fills Out Its Digital Team Ahead of Super Tuesday

The Biden Campaign Fills Out Its Digital Team Ahead of Super Tuesday

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is staffing up on digital, with four key hires ahead of the Super Tuesday primary elections. On Sunday, the campaign named Ryan Thompson as chief mobilization officer and Kate Conway as creative director. Cat Stern was named director of digital persuasion and Clarke Humphrey is being brought on as a senior advisor for digital persuasion. A Biden spokesperson told WIRED that Stern, formerly vice president of paid media at the Democratic marketing firm Authentic, will be leading a digital ads program along with Humphrey, who will also work with its network of influencers. Humphrey previously served as White House digital director for the Biden administration’s Covid-19 response team. The pair’s program will be “focused on creative testing and being in more places than ever.” “I’m thrilled to bring on four experienced digital operatives as we turn to the general election,” Rob Flaherty, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, said in a statement to WIRED. “This is a team that doesn’t just understand how to reach voters in a climate that is more …

‘I feel my heart breaking into a thousand pieces’: Goma fills with refugees trying to flee fighting in DRC | Global development

‘I feel my heart breaking into a thousand pieces’: Goma fills with refugees trying to flee fighting in DRC | Global development

The doctors and nurses at Ndosho hospital in Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are working round the clock with a stream of injured people arriving each day. People trying to escape the fighting between the rebel militia group M23 and government forces have been arriving in the regional capital of North Kivu province in their thousands over the past 10 days. Moustapha Ngabo, 36, is standing outside a ward, watching anxiously as doctors examine his two-year-old daughter. His shirt is splattered with her blood. “There was fighting between the M23 and the army in the hills,” he says. “We took nothing with us as we left.” Ngabo and his family have been displaced twice. First, they left their home village in the Masisi region of North Kivu to take refuge in Saké, a town about 15 miles from Goma. On 13 February, with rebels closing in and shells falling on the town, Ngabo and his wife made the decision to take their two children and run again. But they hadn’t made it …

Some of What Putin Told Tucker Carlson Missed the Bigger Picture. This Fills in the Gaps

Russian President Vladimir Putin sat down in the Kremlin for a two-hour interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, pushing his views on the justification for the nearly 2-year-old war in Ukraine, the prospects of peace talks, and other issues. He also touched on the arrest of Evan Gershkovich, an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal, who is charged with espionage, A look at some key quotes from Putin, supplying context and background: PUTIN’S QUOTE: “It was they who started the war in 2014. Our goal is to stop this war. And we did not start this war in 2022. This is an attempt to stop it.” THE CONTEXT: This statement refers to the violence in Ukraine that was sparked by the 2014 ouster of the Moscow-friendly president, Viktor Yanukovych, amid mass anti-government demonstrations in Kyiv. Russia responded by illegally annexing the Crimea region of Ukraine, and fighting broke out in the country’s industrial east, where pro-Moscow separatists said they were trying to protect the Russian-speaking population. Klopp finally fills the Salah void but Fulham create enough to spark hope | Carabao Cup

Klopp finally fills the Salah void but Fulham create enough to spark hope | Carabao Cup

How do you replace 204 goals in 332 games? The Jürgen Klopp way was to wait until the 56th minute and throw on Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah. It worked. A quarter of an hour later Liverpool had transformed a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory, the Gakpo‑Núñez combo crafting the winner. Yet until their introduction this semi-final first leg against Fulham was the oddest of tales. Becalmed at Anfield: it is supposed to be the fate of visitors, not of Liverpool. Especially not a Klopp vintage who are Premier League leaders, who began this match unbeaten in 14 games at their cathedral, 12 of these wins, with only Manchester United and Arsenal managing to avoid defeat here. This, though, was the story until the 68th minute when Curtis Jones hit one in off Tosin Adarabioyo’s back and then Gakpo slotted home a cool flicked finish the missing Salah might have fashioned, the pinpoint delivery coming from Núñez. Until their advent, this second outing since the loss …

Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter for all the latest entertainment news and reviews Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Dave Chappelle has released a new Netflix special, The Dreamer, which is full of jokes about the trans community and disabled people. “I love punching down!” he tells the audience, in a one-hour show that landed on the streaming service today (31 December). It’s his seventh special for Netflix and comes two years after his last one, the highly controversial release The Closer. That programme was criticised for its relentless jokes about the trans community, and Chappelle revisits the topic in his new show. He tells jokes about trans women in prison, and about trans people “pretending” to be somebody they are not. His set also targets disabled people. “Tonight, I’m doing all handicap jokes,” he announces. One sketch is about paraplegic former North Carolina Republican representative Madison Cawthorn, who famously claimed he was invited to Washington sex parties. The Dreamer was shot in Chappelle’s hometown of Washington, DC at the Lincoln Theatre. His …

P97 fills up its tank with M to fuel its gas station mobile commerce services

P97 fills up its tank with $40M to fuel its gas station mobile commerce services

The rising prices for gas continue to be a headache and stress for a lot of people around the world, but it underscores something more besides the cost of living becoming increasingly untenable: Cars are a central part of modern life. So for the entrepreneurially minded, gas stations thus represent a huge opportunity: the engagement around buying fuel is some of the most recurring and predictable activity people will have in their consumer lives. Today, a startup that has built a business out of capitalizing on that idea is announcing a round of funding to continue its growth. P97, a Houston startup that partners with fuel brands, gas station retailers, electric car charging companies, mobile wallet providers, and connected car OS makers to make it easier to select and pay for your gas (or electric charge) either through an app or connected car, has picked up $40 million in equity funding. Portage, a firm known for making Fintech investments, is leading the round, with other investors undisclosed. P97 has been around for 12 years already …
