General Catalyst and European early stage fund La Famiglia ‘join forces’ to invest in European startups

In a move that will help cement the incursion of US-based VCs into the European ecosystem, General Catalyst and La Famiglia have announced they are, in their words, “joining forces”. Jeannette zu Fürstenberg, Founding Partner of La Famiglia, is slated to become a Managing Director within General Catalyst’s global partnership, driving a “long-term vision for Europe”, alongside her La Famiglia GP, Judith Dada. Fürstenberg has spoken frequently in the past about European resilience and technological sovereignty, no doubt a subject which will bring to her investment thesis to bear in areas like climate, industrial, and defence, in addition to traditional software-centric opportunities.  However, can can the partnership truly live up to the lofty aspirations they outline? La Famiglia, an increasingly active seed investor out of Berlin, is to become a Seed investment arm, and – at least for now – retaining it’s brand as such, aligning with General Catalyst, a VC with a with a 20+ year history and a significant European investing footprint. Germany’s XaaS platform Equipme secures .8M Seed led by La Famiglia VC

Germany’s XaaS platform Equipme secures $3.8M Seed led by La Famiglia VC

As the economy has gotten tougher, plenty of companies have switched to buying in assets to renting them. There’s a tortuous acronym for this which is XaaS or “Everything-as-a-Service”, also referred to as “Servitization”. An example of this would be ServiceNow which automates services for enterprise operations. A new-ish player in this space is Equipme, out of Germany, which bills itself in this XaaS manner. It’s now secured $3.8M in a seed investment round led by La Famiglia VC, out of Berlin, the €250M fund raise for which we covered just last month. Other investors include Lightbird, Anamcara and Angels including Ignaz Forstmeier, co-Founder at Personio, and Charlie Songhurst, former Head of Corporate Strategy at Microsoft. Equipme has a B2B marketplace and asset management portal which – it says – enables suppliers to offer their products and services in this XaaS manner. In other words, companies invite their existing service-providers onto it and then make their services available via this self-service model. In a statement, Paul Martin, Co-Founder and CEO of Equipme said: “For instance, Equipme …

Berlin VC fund La Famiglia raises €250M for both Seed and Growth B2B startups

La Famiglia, a Berlin-based VC fund (no, not the Mafia organization, in case there is any confusion) has raised €250 million for its combined third seed fund (which is €165 million) and its first growth co-investment fund (€90 million). The fund has a vertical focus on ML and AI, data, logistics, and supply chains, consumerization of B2B, fintech and insurtech, sustainability, so-called “Industry 4.0”, as well as other new technology areas. The firm currently has over 70 startups in its portfolio, including Deel (a payroll and HR platform, most recently pegged at a $12 billion valuation); Personio (HR management software); Forto (digital freight forwarding); as well as Y42 (data operations cloud), Sweep (carbon accounting platform, similar to Watershed in the US) and Buynomics (commercial operating system). To date, the fund has raised more than €350 million since its inception in 2017, when it closed its first €35 million seed fund. The second €60 million seed fund came in 2019. The fund aims to invest up to €5 million in largely B2B startups. Zurich-based quality management …
