Humanists UK express concern about plans to permit new 100% religiously selective schools

School desk and chairs in empty modern classroom. Empty class room with white board and projector in elementary school. Primary classroom with smartboard and alphabet on wall. Humanists UK has raised concerns over potentially unintended consequences of measures in the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill that would, if not amended, pave the way for a new generation of 100% religiously selective schools. The Bill does not refer to faith school admissions at all and nothing in what the Government has published has referred to this effect, but the measures are tucked away in the later clauses. Since 2007 all new religious academies (and since 2011 all new religious state schools) have been permitted to enforce religious selection for only 50% of their intake. With the Government now proposing to return control of opening new schools to local authorities, religious schools will once again be able to open and apply religious discrimination to 100% of their places. The Government’s Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill was given its first reading on Wednesday 17 December, and includes measures …

Leading writers and columnists express horror at Observer sale

Observer front page for 13 October 2024 Twenty-six leading former Guardian and Observer writers have written an open letter condemning the actions of The Scott Trust as the CEO of the titles sought to calm ongoing outrage over the sale of The Observer. The letter’s signatories include poet Blake Morrison, novelist Julian Barnes and leading journalists such as Decca Aitkenhead, Hadley Freeman and Nick Davies. The latest open letter (published exclusively in Press Gazette below) follows letters expressing similar sentiments in The Guardian itself from former Observer editor Paul Webster, a group of some 125 current Guardian and Observer staff and a group of 42 current and former contributors to The Observer foreign pages. The latest letter expresses outrage that The Scott Trust, which owns Guardian Media Group, voted through the sale of The Observer to Tortoise while journalists were in the midst of a strike in protest at the deal. CEO Bateson meanwhile has written to staff offering answers to some of the questions raised in these letters such as: why was the deal …

Conservative Christians ‘grieve’ Gaetz nomination, express frustration with leaders’ silence

(RNS) — Christian conservative leaders are hearing mounting criticism for their silence about the nomination of U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz to serve as the new Trump administration’s attorney general, as allegations about drug-fueled parties and sex trafficking involving the nominee continue to swirl in Washington. “Those most vocal about supposedly loving Jesus and embracing Christian values are the ones that are least likely to stand up and object to nominations of this type of individual,” Boz Tchividjian, grandson of famed evangelist Billy Graham and longtime attorney for sexual abuse survivors in religious settings, told RNS on Wednesday (Nov. 20). Shortly after President-elect Donald Trump tapped Gaetz, a Southern Baptist, as his pick to head the U.S. Department of Justice, attention turned to a congressional ethics investigation looking into allegations by a Gaetz associate that Gaetz knew that women were paid for sex at parties he attended and that Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old in 2017. ABC News has reported that it obtained Venmo records suggesting the former congressman paid $10,000 to two women who …

How safe are express buses to Malaysia? Here’s what you should know

How safe are express buses to Malaysia? Here’s what you should know

“We can’t speed (in the daytime),” he said. “(At) night, we speed. … Traffic is (light).” The fastest he said he has gone is 120 km/h, driving from Johor Bahru to KL in a time of two hours and 45 minutes. But he himself has never caused an accident, he claimed, as he is “a professional”. “When I’m driving, my eyes, my nose, … my body, everything’s working,” he said. “Even when I speed, … customers say, ‘You’re a good driver. … Some buses (take) five hours; you (take) three hours.’” Keeping to the speed limit for the entire trip would make him feel “sleepy” and is “impossible” to do, he added. Another driver, Burhan Abdharu, said the reason accidents happen in the early hours is the drivers are tired and “haven’t had enough sleep”. The longest he has driven is from KL to Singapore and back and then to Singapore again. That is 15 to 17 hours of driving, not including break time, he reckoned. Source link
