All Euros and golden boot victors by year

All Euros and golden boot victors by year

There have been 16 European Championship tournaments since its inception in 1960. Scheduled to take place every four years, in the even-numbered year between Fifa World Cups, it was originally called the European Nations’ Cup before changing to its current name in 1968. Ten teams have been crowned champions to date. Germany and Spain three times, Italy and France twice, with Russia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Portugal claiming one title each. Two of Germany’s titles came before unification, won by West Germany in 1972 and 1980. Russia’s victory was as the Soviet Union, the Czech Republic was Czechoslavakia and Serbia was Yugoslavia. To date, Spain are the only team to have won back-to-back titles, in 2008 and 2012. England missed the chance to lift the European Championship trophy for the first time in 2021 as they lost the final at Wembley to Italy. The tournament should have been played in 2020 but was postponed a year due to the Covid pandemic. Source link

Digital music group Believe gets takeover offer of 15 euros per share

PARIS : French digital music company Believe said it had received a 15 euros per share offer from a consortium made up of some of its largest shareholders to take over the company, in a deal valuing it at around 1.52 billion euros ($1.64 billion). Reuters had previously reported in January that Believe was examining the possibility of such a buyout offer. The consortium, made up of U.S. investment firm TCV, Swedish priate equity group EQT and Denis Ladegaillerie – the Chairman and CEO of Believe – would buy 71.92 per cent of Paris-based Believe and then make a full offer for the remaining shares, the company said on Monday. It added that Believe’s board of directors backed the offer, which represents a premium of 21 per cent over the last closing price and a premium of 43.8 per cent and 52.2 per cent respectively over the volume-weighted 30 and 120-day average share prices. The tender offer is expected to be filed with France’s AMF stock market regulator during the second quarter of 2024. Believe …

Google pledges 25 million euros to boost AI skills in Europe

LONDON : Google has pledged 25 million euros ($26.98 million) to help people in Europe learn to use artificial intelligence (AI). Announcing the funding on Monday, the tech giant said it had opened applications for social enterprises and nonprofits that could help reach those most likely to benefit from training. The firm will also run a series of “growth academies” to support companies using AI to scale their companies and has expanded its free online AI training courses to 18 languages. “Research shows that the benefits of AI could exacerbate existing inequalities — especially in terms of economic security and employment,” said Adrian Brown, executive director of the Centre for Public Impact, which is running the nonprofit scheme alongside Google. “This new program will help people across Europe develop their knowledge, skills and confidence around AI, ensuring that no one is left behind,” Last month, Google announced it would invest $1 billion into building a data centre just outside of London, as it moves to meet growing demand for internet services in the region. Dutch sprint king Lavreysen reigns supreme at Euros

Dutch sprint king Lavreysen reigns supreme at Euros

Dutch powerhouse Harrie Lavreysen maintained his vice-like grip on men’s sprinting as he claimed gold at the European track championships on home boards on Saturday. Olympic champion Lavreysen beat Poland’s Mateusz Rudyk in the sprint final in Apeldoorn to add to the team sprint gold he claimed earlier in the week. The 26-year-old Lavreysen has proven almost unbeatable in recent years and his victory on the penultimate day of the championships means he is now the reigning Olympic, world and European champion in sprint and team sprint. He has 26 gold medals from major championships, including a record 13 world titles, and will be the favourite to rack up more gold at this year’s Paris Olympics. Lavreysen could win his third gold of the week in Sunday’s keirin. Israel’s Mikhail Yakovlev beat Lavreysen’s Dutch team mate Jeffrey Hoogland in the bronze medal race. Britain’s Ethan Hayter took his second gold of the week with victory in the men’s omnium, edging out Denmark’s Niklas Larsen in a thrilling finish. Hayter’s compatriot Katie Marchant won the women’s …

Álvaro Morata sets up Spain victory to keep Scotland waiting for Euros spot | Euro 2024 qualifying

Scotland may still make it to Euro 2024 but qualification will have to wait for another day and another place. A point in Seville would have sent them through with two games to spare, but a belting goal from Scott McTominay that seemed to have put them into the lead and within touching distance of the tournament was ruled out, the cruel verdict handed down by the VAR, and then their resistance was finally broken. The roar from the 4,000 Scotland fans had barely died down, joy killed by the small screen, when with 15 minutes to go, Álvaro Morata dived to head beyond Angus Gunn. Only the second goal Scotland have conceded in qualification was already enough to inflict a first, painful defeat. And then, chasing the game and having forced two great chances to equalise, through Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong, they conceded a second on the night just three minutes from the end, Joselu pulling back for Oihan Sancet to force the ball over the line. That leaves Scotland needing a point …

Greenlyte raises 4.5M euros to capture CO2

Greenlyte raises 4.5M euros to capture CO2

In case you haven’t noticed, the world hasn’t stopped burning fossil fuels. At this rate, someday soon we’ll probably have to do things the hard way: remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. It’s not ideal, but here we are. In anticipation of that day, a number of companies are working to have solutions ready sooner than later. Some are spreading crushed rock on fields to speed a naturally occurring process. Others have built giant chemistry kits in an attempt to terraform Earth. Greentlyte Carbon Technologies falls in the latter category. Superficially, the German startup sounds similar to some other players in the space, including Climeworks and Carbon Engineering. But once you dig a little deeper, some key differences begin to emerge. For one, Greenlyte’s process doesn’t just remove carbon dioxide from the air. It also makes hydrogen. Suddenly direct air capture is looking like less of a chore. The startup’s technology is based on the research of Peter Behr, who spent the last 15 years researching carbon capture at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In …

Alexander-Arnold inspires England to sweep Malta aside 4-0 in Euros qualifier | Euro 2024 qualifying

It is the tournament qualification that has come to feel impossible for England to miss – and not only because of their victory over Italy in Naples in March’s opening match, although that plainly helps. The top two nations in this five-team group will advance to Euro 2024 in Germany and there is even a possible safety net via the Nations League. And so, with Ukraine beaten at Wembley in the second game, England had this stroll to another victory, another step closer to the inevitable, against limited opposition in the shape of Malta. The hosts are 172nd in the Fifa rankings, only three European countries below them, and there is a reason why they have won only seven qualifiers in 61 years of trying. It went pretty much as everybody thought it would go, elitelevel players against a group that are several notches below and for the clearest example of the gulf in class, nobody inside this small but sprawling venue needed to look too far beyond the figure in the England No 10 …

Volkswagen pumps 1B euros into China electric vehicle center

Volkswagen pumps 1B euros into China electric vehicle center

Auto Shanghai, which is underway this week, is a yearly opportunity for carmakers and auto suppliers to flex their muscles and show their commitment to China, the world’s largest auto market. At this year’s edition, Volkswagen announced that it will invest around one billion euros ($1.1 billion) in a new China center for the development, innovation and procurement of fully connected electric cars. Marcus Hafkemeyer, chief technology officer of Volkswagen Group China, will head the new firm as CEO. Driven by 2,000 staff, the facility named 100%TechCo plans to merge vehicles and components R&D with procurement. The rationale behind the strategy seems to stem from the German auto giant’s urge to better answer China’s fast-changing consumer needs. “This will leverage synergies in the development process and integrate state-of-the-art local technologies into product development at an early stage,” the company said in its announcement. That is, local suppliers will get to take part in the initial stages of product development so iterations can happen early on. “The aim is to align the Group’s vehicles even more …
