Escaping Rafah: on the ground in Gaza’s last refuge – podcast | News

On Monday morning, the Israeli military dropped leaflets over eastern Rafah. They warned residents that military operations were going to start there, and they needed to go to ‘safe zones’ further north. The information caused chaos, as thousands of people tried to leave. The decision of whether to stay or go is a complicated one. “There is no safe area in the Gaza Strip,” journalist Nedal Samir Hamdouna tells Michael Safi. He’s living with his family in a tent in Rafah. Garam, 16, based in the eastern area of the city, explains how expensive it is to leave. It’s a difficult call if you don’t know whether Israeli forces will invade and you need money for food. In this episode, we follow Nedal and Garam as they navigate the confusion of this week and decide whether to stay in Rafah or risk leaving, and entering areas that have been destroyed. Reporter Ruth Michaelson explains why Israel is targeting Rafah, and what the reaction has been from Israel’s allies. Photograph: Aaed Baker/ZUMA Press Wire/REX/Shutterstock Support The …

Ostrich captured after escaping Korean zoo, dodging traffic for an hour

SEOUL: An ostrich that escaped from a zoo in the South Korean town of Seongnam has been captured, local authorities said on Tuesday (Mar 27), after it spent an hour dodging vehicles in heavy traffic, surprising many drivers. Witnesses posted pictures and video of the male ostrich named Tadori on social media, after he broke free from a zoo named Bug City and found himself trotting speedily past and across traffic, a local policeman said. Police and a local fire department captured the bird using a net at a car park about 2.6km from the zoo, located about half an hour south of Seoul. The four-year-old ostrich was safe and returned to the zoo in stable condition, zoo owner Choi Yun-joo told Reuters. “His only friend, a female ostrich Tasooni, passed away about a month ago. Guess that has been tough on Tadori,” Choi said. Source link

Escaping the Dopamine Cartel | Mind Matters

Escaping the Dopamine Cartel | Mind Matters

Several decades have passed since the media critic Neil Postman penned his influential Amusing Ourselves to Death, in which he laments the intrusion of the television and the rise of a visually stimulating but superficial entertainment culture. The image would be championed over the word, with appearance superceding substance. The American masses were sitting stupefied in front of a screens, and with it came diminished cognitive activity, laziness, and trading the active pursuit of meaning for a passive consumption of pleasure. But what if, despite Postman’s prescience, we have now taken a step beyond the problem of “too much entertainment”? Suppose entertainment itself can’t keep up with the new forces at play? That’s the question the music and cultural critic Ted Gioia asked recently in a Substack post. Here, he investigates the impact of the “dopamine culture,” our modern tendency to flit among tabs and scroll endlessly through fifteen-second-long video clips. He writes, The fastest growing sector of the culture economy is distraction. Or call it scrolling or swiping or wasting time or whatever you …

Boys, 11 and 12, arrested after animals killed at college – with owl escaping | UK News

Two boys aged 11 and 12 have been arrested after police received reports that several animals had been killed at a college in west London. The children, who have been released on bail, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and burglary. The Metropolitan Police said it was called to an incident at Capel Manor College’s Gunnersbury Park campus at the weekend. The force said: “On Sunday 25 February we received a report that several animals had been killed and animal closures had been damaged at Capel Manor College. “Officers visited the scene and viewed CCTV footage. A forensic examination was also carried out.” Capel Manor College said a “terrible episode” had also allowed its “much-loved” barn owl Shiraz to escape and is appealing for help from the public. In a statement, the college confirmed its campus “experienced a break-in that resulted in damage to some of the animal areas, and sadly some animals died”. It added: “The safety of our staff, students, animals and community is of utmost importance to us. “A team is onsite coordinating …

Meet the Outlaw escaping from prisons in protest against indefinite detention | Prisons and probation

Meet the Outlaw escaping from prisons in protest against indefinite detention | Prisons and probation

It should be impossible to escape from a high-security prison, doubly so for prisoners held on the segregation unit, who are allowed only to exercise in a caged yard. But on 21 June, the summer solstice and the hottest day of the year at that point, Joe Outlaw managed to break through the cage and get on to the roof of HMP Frankland, a Durham prison dubbed “Monster mansion” due to many of its inmates being convicted murderers, terrorists and sex offenders. A local photographer captured Outlaw sunbathing in his underpants as he negotiated with prison officers from the National Tactical Response Group. Some social media users may have recognised Outlaw from TikTok and YouTube, where he used to post protest raps and songs from his cell. Screengrab from Joe Outlaw’s YouTube channel. Photograph: YouTube It was a huge embarrassment for the prison service, particularly as Outlaw was on the e-list (escape list) at the time. He shed the yellow and blue jumpsuit that indicates a flight risk only when he breached the cage, prompting …

Lost in space: astronaut’s toolbag orbits Earth after escaping during spacewalk | Space

Skywatchers have a new space object to train their sights on: a toolbag that is now floating through space around Earth. Nasa astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara were conducting a rare all-female spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) on 1 November when their toolbag gave them the slip, according to Nasa. The astronauts, both on their first spacewalk, were making repairs on assemblies that allow the ISS solar arrays to track the sun continuously, reported SciTechDaily, which was documenting the spacewalk. “During the activity, one tool bag was inadvertently lost. Flight controllers spotted the tool bag using external station cameras. The tools were not needed for the remainder of the spacewalk. Mission Control analyzed the bag’s trajectory and determined that risk of recontacting the station is low and that the onboard crew and space station are safe with no action required,” said Nasa on its blog. The white, satchel-like bag is surprisingly bright, shining just below the limit of visibility to the naked eye, which means observers would be able to spot it …

Red panda recaptured after escaping from Newquay zoo | Cornwall

An 11-month-old red panda surprised workers in Cornwall after escaping from Newquay zoo. Police received a call on Monday morning about the escaped red panda strolling down the streets of Newquay. Workers at a fruit wholesaler had spotted the creature, whose name is Sundara, and distracted her with an apple to keep her from running off again. “One of our team spotted something running down the residential street where we’re located and decided it wasn’t a cat or a dog so called out the rest of the team,” Rachel Craze, director at fruit wholesaler FreshPoint Local, told ITV. Craze said the staff guided Sundara into the car park before calling the police, who sent three officers as soon as they “had finished laughing”. “Our team were keeping it safe to make sure it didn’t go back out on to the road,” Craze said. “They rolled it an apple very gently so as not to scare it. The panda very much enjoyed the apple.” The police secured the scene around the red panda until staff from …
