Netflix users left confused as Black Mirror episode is removed for good

Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter for all the latest entertainment news and reviews Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Netflix users are questioning the streaming service’s latest removal decision. Every month, licenced films and TV shows are taken down due to rights surrounding how long they are allowed to be on the service. It’s been widely believed that original projects developed by Netflix are safe and will always be available to view. However, it has become increasingly clear in recent years that this is not the case, with multiple originals being pulled from the service’s library each month. The latest casualties are two interactive episodes of TV shows Black Mirror and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – and their removal is particularly worrying as Netflix is the only place they can be shown in their original form. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, released in 2018, offered viewers multiple different plot turns to choose from as the episode went on, which drastically changed the outcome of the ending. The selected …

Nathan Fielder criticises Paramount+ for removing TV episode for antisemitism ‘sensitivities’

Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter for all the latest entertainment news and reviews Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Comedian Nathan Fielder has addressed “sensitivities” around an episode of his docu-series Nathan For You, which was removed from the Paramount+ streaming service over fears of antisemitism. In a 2015 episode of the comedy series, Fielder created a winter apparel brand called Summit Ice, which was been designed by a rabbi, with all proceeds from sales of the garments going towards the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. The idea was in response to Canadian label Taiga, who praised the Holocaust denier Doug Collins in one of their catalogues, calling him a “defender of free speech”. As is the nature of the show, the hair-brained pitch to have the clothes sold in stores was intended to be over-the-top. The clothing included pictures of Auschwitz and other imagery associated with the Holocaust – the joke being that the advertising went so far in the wrong direction that it started …

‘Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’ Was Actually Great—And Paved the Way for ‘Andor’

‘Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’ Was Actually Great—And Paved the Way for ‘Andor’

This week, almost everyone likes Star Wars again. With the three-episode debut of Andor Season 2, our galaxy is as close to united as possible, in that genuinely celebratory Return of the Jedi way, rather than that fascistically enforced actual-plot-of-Andor way: This darker, grittier, less swashbuckling, more adult-oriented version of Star Wars, examining the mechanics of how the Rebel Alliance managed to first turn the tide against the evil Empire, is beloved by (most) fans and (nearly all) TV critics alike. (It even has some avowed movie people tuning in.) Thematically, releasing the season’s four three-episode arcs on a weekly basis makes sense, but in retrospect, it might have also made sense for Lucasfilm to string out its good press for the full twelve weeks. In terms of positive critical and fan response, they’re unlikely to have it this good again for a long time. Luckily, though, Disney and Lucasfilm have another way of burnishing Star Wars’ reputation further, by re-releasing a reminder of what made all of this possible: Star Wars: Episode III – …

‘The Last of Us’ Co-Creator Unpacks Heartbreaking Episode 2 Death

‘The Last of Us’ Co-Creator Unpacks Heartbreaking Episode 2 Death

This interview contains major spoilers for HBO‘s The Last of Us season two, episode two, “Through the Valley.” So do not read further until you have watched… Joel, arguably, had it coming. But that didn’t make his brutal murder at the hands of Abby any less horrifying and heartbreaking to witness. HBO’s The Last of Us wasted no time staging the most notorious scene from the PlayStation game series upon which its based. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann put one of their tale’s biggest twists into season two’s second episode (where viewers might least expect it, as most TV dramas tend to put their “big” episodes near the end of a season). In the sequence, Joel (Pedro Pascal) is beaten to death by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) for having killed her father — the surgeon who wanted to operate on Ellie (Bella Ramsey) at the end of season one (a procedure which would have killed her, but might have also resulted in a cure to the parasitic Cordyceps plague). Ellie, held hostage, is forced to …

It’s Hard to Pick a ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Favorite. Just Don’t Skip This Episode

It’s Hard to Pick a ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Favorite. Just Don’t Skip This Episode

Black Mirror season 7 feels like a return to the show’s unsettling roots, with each episode focusing on different facets of how artificial intelligence can disrupt society — it sort of is, already. I’ve watched every entry in the new installment, and one specific episode has haunted me since the credits rolled. I’m talking about Hotel Reverie, the mostly bittersweet black-and-white romance that delivers heaps of nostalgia and sincere emotion. Underneath it all, though, exists a stark warning for entertainment and the industry’s future. Simply put, the episode hints at AI’s threat to Hollywood. And, dare I say, the bleak creative scenario the episode alludes to is pretty much already here. Issa Rae plays Hollywood A-lister Brandy Friday in the Black Mirror season 7 episode Hotel Reverie. Netflix The episode follows Hollywood A-lister Brandy Friday (played by Issa Rae), who decides to take a considerable risk with her career and signs on to star in the remake of a vintage movie, which aptly shares the title with the episode itself.  She soon discovers this is no …

Adolescence star reveals ‘horrible’ detail from filming episode three of Netflix show

Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter for all the latest entertainment news and reviews Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Sign up to our free IndyArts newsletter Owen Cooper, the breakout child star of Adolescence, has shared a “horrible” behind-the-scenes detail that made filming episode three even tougher. Cooper, who is 15, is being tipped for Bafta victory for his debut acting performance as Jamie Miller, a child accused of murder, in the sleeper Netflix hit, which became the most-streamed title in both the UK and the US within its first week of release. Adolescence has received immense acclaim, with episode three in particular being highlighted as a standout. Making the episode even more impressive is the fact that this episode was the first to be shot – meaning it was newcomer Cooper’s first time acting on screen. While the episode goes to extremely dark places, with Jamie slowly divulging his motives for killing a young girl as he’s interviewed by Erin Doherty’s child psychiatrist, there was one small moment that Cooper particularly …
