7 Best Ski Gloves and Mittens, Editor Tested and Reviewed (2024)

7 Best Ski Gloves and Mittens, Editor Tested and Reviewed (2024)

Outer Material Most ski gloves are made using thick polyester treated with a waterproof DWR coating. These offer durable protection against the weather, although it is almost always worth spending a little more for Gore-Tex, or the equivalent waterproof membrane, to guarantee waterproof performance even in the wettest spring slush. Leather is a premium option for the very best ski gloves and mittens. It is soft, durable, and incredibly comfortable. But, unlike a polyester glove, leather requires a little more care, and you will need to use a specific leather cream to maintain softness, and also avoid drying them on the radiator, as it will dry out and potentially crack the leather. But, if looked after, a pair of premium leather gloves with a Gore-Tex liner will last for years. Check carefully as some leather gloves won’t be fully waterproof. Leather is naturally water resistant, which is great if you’re not planning on skiing in extreme conditions, but as always, look for a Gore-Tex membrane to ensure proper waterproofing. Skis and snowboards should be sharp, …

Can Apple’s new AI photo ‘Clean up’ tool beat Google’s Magic Editor? For some users, yes

Can Apple’s new AI photo ‘Clean up’ tool beat Google’s Magic Editor? For some users, yes

Jason Hiner/ZDNET A good camera, photo skills, and a worthy subject are only part of the equation when capturing the perfect photo. Some factors are out of your control, such as objects or people in the background that you can not move but are in the way of your perfect shot. That’s where AI can help.  With Monday’s release of iOS 18.1, Apple introduced an AI-powered “Clean-up” feature, available in the editing section of the Photos library.  With this feature, you can remove unwanted elements of a photo and seamlessly blend the background back in.  Also: Apple just gave the MacBook Air a big performance upgrade – at no extra cost Although this is a new and exciting feature for iOS users, Google has had a similar feature, Magic Editor, available for Pixel phones since 2023. Google recently expanded its offering to all Google Photos users  — including iOS users.  So, the question is: Was Apple’s counterpart worth the wait? To find out, I tested both tools using photos — from my recent trip — …

National Catholic Reporter names Wall St. Journal’s James Grimaldi as executive editor

National Catholic Reporter names Wall St. Journal’s James Grimaldi as executive editor

(RNS) — Ending a yearlong vacancy atop its editorial team, the National Catholic Reporter, the 60-year-old, left-leaning Catholic media outlet, announced that James V. Grimaldi, a senior writer at The Wall Street Journal, has been named executive editor.  Grimaldi, 62, is set to begin work Sept. 16, filling a position that has been vacant since August of 2023, when Heidi Schlumpf stepped down after four years in the role, becoming a senior correspondent. Grimaldi will report directly to Joe Ferullo, the newspaper’s CEO and publisher. In an arrangement in step with the technology-aided dislocations of modern journalism, Grimaldi will oversee the editorial operation of NCR, which is headquartered in Kansas City, from Washington, where the newspaper has offices in the historic Methodist Building on Capitol Hill. Ferullo, a retired television executive, works from Los Angeles.  Ferullo said of Grimaldi’s appointment in a statement, “James is dedicated to NCR’s mission; he will elevate and expand NCR’s excellent journalism at a pivotal moment in the history of the Catholic Church. All of us at NCR — including …

Why does SheerLuxe’s AI fashion editor have to be so mind-numbingly banal?

Why does SheerLuxe’s AI fashion editor have to be so mind-numbingly banal?

Although, if I’m to be picky, it does seem spectacularly dull that even with the ability to create any kind of woman, Reem is an impersonation of mystifying blandness. She’s young, pretty, but not threateningly so, she’s slim (because why would you make a pretend-person chubby?) has perfectly blow-dried glossy hair and slathered on “no-make-up” make-up. She speaks in brand names, products and trending restaurants, spewing mind-numbingly banal sentences such as: “Despite my love of maximalist designers, I think it’s really worth investing in some of the heritage brands that have a legacy of beautiful craftmanship.” She has a skincare routine (“I swear by retinol”) and recommendation for injectables, because what kind of fake woman wouldn’t be hammering home manufactured impossible beauty standards? Never has so-called intelligence felt quite so artificial. Source link

Will Lewis Is Said to Have Used Stolen Records as Editor in U.K.

Will Lewis Is Said to Have Used Stolen Records as Editor in U.K.

The publisher and the incoming editor of The Washington Post, when they worked as journalists in London two decades ago, used fraudulently obtained phone and company records in newspaper articles, according to a former colleague, a published account of a private investigator and an analysis of newspaper archives. Will Lewis, The Post’s publisher, assigned one of the articles in 2004 as business editor of The Sunday Times. Another was written by Robert Winnett, whom Mr. Lewis recently announced as The Post’s next executive editor. The use of deception, hacking and fraud is at the heart of a long-running British newspaper scandal, one that toppled a major tabloid in 2010 and led to years of lawsuits by celebrities who said that reporters improperly obtained their personal documents and voice mail messages. Mr. Lewis has maintained that his only involvement in the controversy was helping to root out problematic behavior after the fact, while working for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. But a former Sunday Times reporter said on Friday that Mr. Lewis had personally assigned him to …

Picture: Dave Benett/Getty Images for The Newt In Somerset Dylan Jones, editor of the Evening Standard for almost a year, has revealed he “never” reads a print newspaper. The London newsbrand is currently undergoing a transformation into a digital-first brand having struggled to recover after the Covid-19 pandemic slashed its commuter readership and advertising revenue. Instead of reading anything in print anymore, former British GQ editor Jones said, he starts his mornings by checking the Evening Standard website and then looks at “all the apps, that I pay a lot of money for – all the nationals”.
