Eye in the sky: the photographer who used 20,000 photos to make an epic collage map of Dundee | Art

The link between photography and the modern city is well established. In the mid-19th century this developing technology was perfectly suited to capture turbo-charged urban growth as it happened, providing a new way of seeing emerging global metropolises. “Photography not only depicted these wholly novel sorts of environments,” says Meredith More, a curator at the V&A Dundee. “It became an expression in itself of their modernity and complexity. The way people began to imagine and to inhabit their cities was profoundly influenced by the way they were photographed.” A forthcoming V&A Dundee exhibition, Photo City: How Images Shape the Urban World, explores this relationship. The centrepiece is a new work by the Japanese photographer Sohei Nishino. Late last summer Nishino spent six weeks in Dundee walking the streets, meeting people, visiting community groups and businesses and taking photographs of anything that caught his eye: football matches, gulls, car parks, the botanic garden, a hairdresser, the sky, the river. Twenty thousand images later he returned to his studio in Shizuoka, Japan, where he began to make some sense of it all. If you …

Serial rapist James Henderson jailed for 14 years for spate of attacks in Dundee and Aberdeen | UK News

A serial rapist with “blasé attitude to violence” attacked women over a 13-year period. James Henderson, 45, has been jailed for 14 years after being found guilty of raping three women and attempting to rape a fourth. Judge Lady Haldane said Henderson’s criminal justice social work report made for “dispiriting reading” as he accepted no responsibility for his behaviour. Lady Haldane said: “You are recorded as saying that you do not trust women, and to have a blasé attitude to violence. “You appear to regard violence as acceptable and consider that no justification is required for resorting to violence.” Henderson’s assaults took place in Aberdeen and Dundee between 2008 and 2021. Lady Haldane said two of the women were raped repeatedly, and “all were, to a greater or lesser extent, vulnerable”. During Henderson’s trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, one victim described the abuse as “just continuous”. She said: “I know that he raped me that night, but then I would have sex with him to keep him happy. “It was just easier to …

Mikey Johnston scores first goals in four years as Celtic beat Dundee | Scottish Premiership

Mikey Johnston scores first goals in four years as Celtic beat Dundee | Scottish Premiership

Paulo Bernardo and Mikey Johnston were the unlikely goal heroes for Celtic at Dundee but Cameron Carter-Vickers was at the centre of an injury concern before Saturday’s visit by Rangers to Parkhead. Bernardo poked home the 52nd-minute opener at Dens Park to score his first goal for Celtic and substitute Johnston struck his first two goals for the Hoops since December 2019 to earn a comfortable 3-0 win. But the sight of influential centre-back Carter-Vickers going off shortly after the opening goal dampened the Celtic fans’ Boxing Day celebrations. Carter-Vickers immediately had words with Brendan Rodgers after the goal and the visiting supporters’ celebrations were almost silenced moments later when they saw the United States international walking off along with the physio. Carter-Vickers missed two-and-a-half games with a hamstring issue earlier this month and Celtic fans will hope the move was purely precautionary. This was Celtic’s seventh consecutive away game in the first fixture after Christmas Day and it produced a seventh win to ensure Celtic will go into the derby top of the Premiership. …
