What the JFK File Dump Actually Revealed

What the JFK File Dump Actually Revealed

In 1962, the CIA had a driver’s license made for one of its officers, James P. O’Connell. It gave him an alias: James Paul Olds. We know this because the document containing the information was released to the public in 2017—part of an effort to declassify information related to John F. Kennedy’s assassination. But now, thanks to an executive order from President Donald Trump calling for the release of all the classified information pertaining to the incident, we know a bit more. It was, specifically, a California driver’s license. This is an irrelevant detail in an irrelevant document. As far as anyone knows, O’Connell had nothing to do with the assassination; the inclusion of his story was probably just a by-product of an overly broad records request. But there it was on Tuesday evening, when the National Archives and Record Administration uploaded to its website about 63,400 pages of “JFK Assassination Records.” Given Trump’s order, the release of all this information sounded dramatic, but much of what has been revealed is about as interesting as …

Man wants to search dump for lost hard drive with bitcoin fortune – here are his odds of finding it

James Howells is considering buying a council dump in south Wales after his former partner accidentally threw away a hard drive containing his bitcoin wallet. Howells has already lost a high court case to allow him to search the tip for the hard drive, which he believes contains bitcoin worth £600 million. But would it even be possible to find it? Let’s do the maths. Howells, a Welsh IT engineer, was an early adopter of the cryptocurrency bitcoin in December 2008. By February 2009, he had started mining the coins on his laptop – a process which involves using your computer to carry out complex mathematical processes in exchange for the coins. At the time, he was one of just five people mining the currency, and he eventually accrued a fortune of around 8,000 bitcoin. Initially, these were basically worthless – the first real-world transaction involving the currency was in 2010, when a man in Florida bought two pizzas for 10,000 bitcoins. However, in the 15 years since, the value of the currency has grown …

‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 Should Dump the Will-They-Won’t-They Romance

‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 Should Dump the Will-They-Won’t-They Romance

This post contains spoilers for Emily in Paris season four. Years after mounting what became the quintessential will-they-won’t-they TV romance, the creators of Friends suggested that mistakes were made with Ross and Rachel. Unaware their sitcom would last for a decade, the writers got the characters together far too early in the show’s run, which led to breaking them apart and later pairing off Monica and Chandler as the more stable yin to Ross and Rachel’s chaotic yang. Watching the latest season of Emily in Paris, it became evident that this Netflix romantic comedy has made the opposite error: uniting its own on-and-off couple way too late. After three seasons of watching Lily Collins’s dubiously dressed American advertiser Emily pine over Lucas Bravo’s hot French chef Gabriel, the characters finally gave their simmering romance a shot in season four. But only six episodes later, the flame had been snuffed out once more, never to be reignited by the season’s end. Series creator Darren Star is no stranger to a slow-build love affair. The triangle between …

Castoffs to catwalk: fashion show shines light on vast Chile clothes dump visible from space | Global development

Draped in layers of denim, Sadlin Charles walks the catwalk of sand between piles of discarded clothes and tyres in Chile’s Atacama desert. His outfit has been made from items found in the surrounding heaps of rubbish, which are so vast they can be seen from space. Almost all of this waste has come from countries thousands of miles away, including the US, China, South Korea and the UK. A staggering 60,000 tonnes of used clothing is shipped to Chile each year. According to the latest UN figures, Chile is the third largest importer of secondhand clothes in the world. Some of these clothes are resold in secondhand markets, but at least 39,000 tonnes ends up being illegally dumped in the Atacama desert. The desert is one of the country’s most popular tourism destinations, famed for its otherworldly beauty and stargazing, but for those living near the dump sites it has become a place of devastation. “This place is being used as a global sacrifice zone where waste from different parts of the world arrives …

Royal Navy seizes £200million of cocaine as desperate smugglers dump drugs in sea | UK | News

DRUGS worth more than £200million have been seized by the Royal Navy following a dramatic pursuit in the Caribbean Sea. British sailors and Marines on HMS Trent chased down a speedboat as its crew desperately tried to dump nearly three tons of cocaine into the ocean. The crew of HMS Trent launched an extensive search operation that ran throughout the night to recover the drugs thrown overboard. They eventually recovered more than 2.5 tonnes of cocaine valued at £204million. Following this latest success, the crew of HMS Trent have now stopped £511 million worth of drugs from reaching our streets. The smugglers had been spotted by a United States maritime patrol aircraft which alerted the Royal Navy to the suspicious vessel. Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps said: “I’d like to congratulate the crew of HMS Trent for this latest bust, but also for their incredible work over the previous five months, seizing large amounts of drugs and disrupting global drug networks. “The Royal Navy continue to show that those who seek to profit from illegal drugs …

Dollar, Oil, & Gold Jump; Stocks & Bonds Dump As ‘WW3-On’-Risk Reignites

It was all looking so shiny and BTFD-y – Iran had sent some missiles towards Israeli folks; ‘allies’ blocked 99% of them; and Israel appeared unlikely top respond ‘imminently’. Stocks were up, crypto was up, oil was down as ‘WW3-off’ meant risk-on. But, then the headlines just kept coming from the MidEast, reigniting fears that things were about to escalate quickly once again, sending oil, gold, and the dollar roaring higher. Add to that the fact that 2Y yields surged up towards 5.00% (after strong nominal retail sales) and ‘risk-off’ rapidly spoiled the overnight dip-buyers’ fun. Specifically, 5.00% has not been a fun place for S&P 500 multiples in the last couple of years… Source: Bloomberg …and it appears the same it true for now with the majors reversing solid early gains into serious weakness as the day unfolded. Nasdaq and Russell 2000 were the day’s biggest losers, swinging from almost 1% gains to 1.5% losses by the close… This was the biggest two-day drop for the S&P 500 since March 10th 2023 (SVB)… Interestingly, …

History’s Most Revealing Rubbish Dump

History’s Most Revealing Rubbish Dump

When we think of ancient artifacts, we usually think of the objects that people held dear. But if you really want to get the dirty details of daily life in antiquity, you should check out the things that have been discarded.   There is perhaps no better example of this than the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, a ground-breaking collection of texts (amounting to at least half a million fragments), that were discovered in ancient Egyptian trash heaps at the end of the 19th century. From food orders to sacred scriptures, the discoveries at Oxyrhynchus paint a picture of ancient life that might surprise you.   The Ancient City of Oxyrhynchus  Map of Egypt with Oxyrhynchus highlighted, Source: University of Oxford   In Egypt’s Western Desert, on the bank of the Bahr Yussef, sits the site of the ancient city Oxyrhynchus. Once called Per-Medjed, after the sacred elephantfish of the Nile, the city was the capital of the 19th Upper Egyptian nome.   When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BCE, Greek citizens populated the city, …

Easter sunrise: It’s time for evangelicals to dump Trump and return to Christ

Easter sunrise: It’s time for evangelicals to dump Trump and return to Christ

Nothing is quite as nice as an Easter Sunday sunrise service on a New England small-town beach. One year during my ministry, I was in charge of officiating such a service, and on that morning everything seemed to go perfectly — including the pancake breakfast that followed! Easter in New England usually aligns with warmer weather, longer days, hope and new possibilities. These days, however, it sometimes appears that the sun is setting on the true message of Easter for too many American Christians, as the true church is replaced by a church led by Donald Trump. Easter is, as you surely know, a celebration of the resurrection of a fallen leader who rises again. I have begun to realize that a terrible thing is happening across this country during this Easter season as false evangelical pastors head to the pulpit to align Trump, of all people, with the role of Jesus Christ. As Jesus was falsely accused, they preach, Trump must be as well. This is of course absurd, yet it is believed or …

Sellafield nuclear waste dump to be prosecuted for alleged cybersecurity offences | Energy industry

The Sellafield nuclear waste dump is to be prosecuted for alleged information technology security offences, the industry watchdog has said. The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) said on Thursday that it had notified the state-owned Cumbrian nuclear company that it would be prosecuted under industry security regulations. The prosecution follows the Guardian’s revelations last year of multiple cyber failings at the vast site, part of a year-long investigation into cyber hacking, radioactive contamination and an unhealthy workplace culture at Sellafield. The ONR said: “These charges relate to alleged information technology security offences during a four-year period between 2019 and early 2023. There is no suggestion that public safety has been compromised as a result of these issues. The decision to begin legal proceedings follows an investigation by ONR, the UK’s independent nuclear regulator.” Sellafield, which has more than 11,000 staff, was placed into a form of “special measures” for consistent failings on cybersecurity in 2022, according to sources at the ONR and the security services. Among the Guardian’s revelations in December were that groups linked …

Trump’s hush money case set for critical hearing over document dump

The judge overseeing former President Trump’s hush money case will hold a consequential hearing Monday to sort out who is to blame for a curveball that delayed the trial at the last minute. Trump’s trial had been widely expected to begin the same day as the hearing until federal prosecutors this month began turning over what would become more than 100,000 pages of records. The trial is now delayed until at least mid-April. On Monday, the parties are set to battle in a New York courtroom over whether the records require another delay — or even sanctions — as Judge Juan Merchan attempts to ascertain why they weren’t turned over earlier. “It’s like ‘I Love Lucy.’ ‘Lucy, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!’” said Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a former Manhattan chief assistant district attorney. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) charged Trump last year with 34 counts of falsifying business records related to reimbursements to his then-fixer, Michael Cohen, who paid adult film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 just before the 2016 election to stay quiet …
