All curves and with a big black glass door complete with LCD circle control display, LG informs that the design concept is “based on a deep, yet softly moonlit sky reflecting on a calm midnight lake” and it’s not my place to comment on such things, so there you have it: a stunning moon/lake thing. The 11 best tumble dryers of 2024, according to experts

The 11 best tumble dryers of 2024, according to experts

Given that our inclement weather makes drying clothes on a line all year round nigh-on impossible, the Great British public has two choices: a cheap-to-run heated clothes airer, or a convenient but energy-intensive tumble dryer. Or so you may think. In fact, the best tumble dryers these days are decidedly low-energy, costing around 60p per load. Heated clothes airers only cost around 10p per hour to run, but they often take five hours or more to dry clothes. So the difference really is slight.  If you choose a dryer, the tricky part is weighing up how much to spend. Tumble dryers at the affordable end are less energy efficient, so could cost you more in the long-run. Heat pump tumble dryers are more expensive up-front, but don’t require so much electricity to generate heat, making them more energy efficient and cheaper in the long-run. (You could also consider a space-saving washer-dryer, but the performance won’t match the specialist tumble dryers or washing machines.) If that sounds complicated, we’ve broken down the difference between heat pump, …

Washers and dryers are about to get a whole lot more efficient

Washers and dryers are about to get a whole lot more efficient

This story was originally published by Grist. Sign up for Grist’s weekly newsletter here. Doing laundry accounts for about 8 percent of a home’s annual electricity use, a figure that does not include the energy needed to heat the water swirling through the washing machine. Beyond that financial cost, the appliances contribute mightily to the nation’s carbon footprint. On Thursday, the Biden administration announced new washer and dryer efficiency standards that could ease those burdens.  The updated standards — first reported by Grist — will result in top-loading clothes washers that are 11 percent more energy efficient than similar current machines while using 28 percent less water. Dryers will see up to a 40 percent reduction in energy use, depending on the model. The requirements are in line with current Energy Star efficiency benchmarks, and will apply to equipment produced after March 1, 2028.  “These rules represent an opportunity for more efficient appliances that provide the same level of performance but have reduced operating expenses,” a Department of Energy official told Grist, speaking on the condition of anonymity. …

Best Hair Dryers and Diffusers (2024): Blow-Dryers, Brushers, and Diffusers

Best Hair Dryers and Diffusers (2024): Blow-Dryers, Brushers, and Diffusers

There are simply too many hair dryers out there. Here are a few more we’ve tried and like. Laifen SE Hair Dryer for $150: I wasn’t expecting to be wowed by this dryer, but I was. It’s compact and painted in gorgeous colors—I tried the lavender one. It’s also the cheapest of Laifen’s lineup and, importantly, it really did dry my hair quickly. It claims to dry a full head of hair in 10 to 15 minutes. It took me around 45 minutes to diffuse and dry, but I have more hair than multiple people combined. It does it without singeing your head off—it has settings for 122 and 176 degrees Fahrenheit. After a few months, though, the diffuser fell off and separated mid-dry so be careful. T3 Aireluxe for $200: Oh how I love this dryer. It’s constructed out of plastic, but that makes it so light and effortless to use. There are five heat and three speed settings. I just wish it came with a diffuser. Kosa The Triple Threat Blow Dryer for …
