Is mild man Dowden up to the threat of China’s cyber campaign? | Zoe Williams

The deputy prime minister’s statement on cybersecurity and China-backed attempts to undermine UK democracy had been briefed far enough in advance that MPs had had time to sharpen their insults. Iain Duncan Smith said Oliver Dowden’s announcement was like watching an elephant giving birth to a mouse. The SNP member Stuart C McDonald accused Dowden of taking a wooden spoon to a gunfight. Labour’s Chris Bryant called him “wilfully blind, and therefore dangerous”. The inattentive observer might come away from the statement unclear on who posed the greater threat to our national security, Oliver Dowden or the Chinese. The rest of us, of course, knew exactly who was the greater threat: because the more you hear about Chinese state-affiliated actors, the more competent and agile they sound. Nothing like that could be said of Dowden, who has a kind of understudy’s uncertainty. He’s a mild man who didn’t really sign up for this. He likes British values plenty, and would defend democracy as long as there was breath left in his body, but the last …

China responsible for two ‘malicious’ cyber attack campaigns in UK, says Dowden | Politics News

China responsible for two ‘malicious’ cyber attack campaigns in UK, says Dowden | Politics News

China “state-affiliated actors” have been blamed by the government for two “malicious” cyber attack campaigns in the UK. Making a speech in the Commons, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden revealed the two incidents involved an attack on the Electoral Commission – responsible for overseeing elections and political finance – in 2021, and targeted attacks against China-sceptic MPs. He confirmed the Foreign Office would be summoning the Chinese ambassador “to account for China’s conduct in these incidents”, and that the UK, alongside international partners such as the US, would be issuing sanctions. Mr Dowden told MPs: “The cyber threat posed by China affiliated actors is real and it is serious, but it is more than equalled by our determination and resolve to resist it. “That is how we defend ourselves and our precious democracy.” But he faced condemnation from backbench Tories for not going far enough, with former immigration minister Robert Jenrick calling the actions of the UK government “feeble” and “derisory”, and foreign affairs committee chair Alicia Kearns deeming them “sadly insufficient”. Oliver Dowden set to blame electoral roll cyber-attacks on China | Politics | News

The UK government is set to blame China for cyber-attacks on the country’s Electoral Commission. The attacks happened in August 2021, but details only emerged last year. It reportedly saw the personal details of millions of voters accessed. Several MPs and peers who have been critical of Beijing are believed to have also been targeted. Deputy PM Oliver Dowden will speak to Parliament later on Monday about the threat posed by China. According to the BBC, other Western nations will express similar concerns. The Electoral Commission acknowledged “hostile actors” have accessed copies of the electroal registers and hacked into both its emails and “control systems”. The Electoral Commission said the attack had not affected any elections or anyone’s registration status. It is now thought that Mr Dowden will suggest those behind the attack had links to Beijing. Dowden is also expected to outline how the UK intends to respond to the threat. The government wants to emphasise that it has already turned down or reduced Chinese investment in infrastructure in recent years due to national …

Labour selects 26-year-old Gogglebox star to take on Deputy PM Oliver Dowden | Politics | News

Labour has selected yet another celebrity candidate to take on the Tories at the General Election, turning to a familiar face from Channel 4’s hit show Gogglebox. Josh Tapper, who regularly appeared on the television reaction show from the age of 15, was last night selected to fight deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden in his Hertfordshire seat of Hertsmere. Reacting to his selection, Mr Tapper said he is “thrilled and honoured” to have won the selection and pledged to not let down local Labour members. He optimistically said: “The work to unseat the Deputy Prime Minister starts now!” Mr Downden has a huge 21,313 majority, winning 62.5% of the vote in 2019, so it is unlikely Mr Tapper will deliver on his goal of toppling the top Tory. However despite his television stardom, he is no political novice. After starring on Gogglebox for four years alongside his mother, father and sister, he left the show in 2017 to pursue a career in the civil service. Mr Tapper joined Downing Street, leaving in 2019. In 2022 …
