What Shannen Doherty Understood About Brenda Walsh

What Shannen Doherty Understood About Brenda Walsh

When Ezra Pound said “Make it new,” he was not talking about teen soaps. So much of their appeal lies in their predictable storytelling and immediately recognizable characters: the beautiful girl group with the just-complicated-enough underbelly, the standoffish and misunderstood boys who’ll fall in love when the right girls come their way. Even Beverly Hills, 90210—which popularized, and arguably remains the apotheosis of, the genre—was bound by the formulaic demands of network television. When Brenda Walsh, played by Shannen Doherty, complains to her mom in the show’s first episode that she has nothing to wear and doesn’t “have the right hair,” what she means is that she’s a brunette in a world of blondes; complexity, variation, the unexpected and wholly new did not appear often on ’90s TV. Still, Doherty, who died of cancer earlier this month, was able to make something unforgettable out of Brenda. In a fictional world of tried-and-true tropes, she wasn’t a good girl or a bad girl; she was something more human altogether. Her smirk, those bangs, her roiling, earnest …

Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty Had a Falling Out on ‘90210’

Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty reunited this week to recall a falling out that the two of them had while working on Beverly Hills, 90210 — but neither of them could remember the cause. Doherty hosted Spelling on her Let’s Be Clear podcast, sharing toward the beginning that the two friends were “trying to figure out” what led to friction between them during their time on the hit series. “It’s like one minute, we were friends, and then one minute we weren’t,” said Doherty, who played Brenda Walsh on 90210. Spelling, who played Donna Martin (and whose father, Aaron Spelling, produced the show) added that she was often easily swayed. Doherty agreed. “It was very frustrating for me because I always used to tell you like, ‘Yeah, Tor, have an opinion,’” Doherty recalled. “Like, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re talented. I loved you and I respected you and I wanted you to believe in yourself as much as I believed in you.” Eventually, both women said that part of their tension came from Spelling’s then-boyfriend, …

Shannen Doherty Talks ‘Learning Moment For Us All’ Amid Kate Middleton’s Cancer Diagnosis

Shannen Doherty shared a message of support for Kate Middleton amid her bout with cancer, and she also had a message to the rest of the world conjuring up conspiracies with regard to her whereabouts — please leave her alone now. The 52-year-old actress on Friday reacted to the devastating news that the Princess of Wales has been diagnosed with cancer by expressing repulsion over how the public had been treating Kate prior to her sharing her latest health update. “Being a public figure does not mean the public owns that person. We ALL have the right to go thru illness or life privately,” Doherty wrote on Instagram. “The onslaught of conspiracy theories, ownership and plain morbid curiosity forced this person to explain herself before she had come to terms with it and explained to her children.” Kate, 42, said the news of the cancer diagnosis came as a “huge shock” to the royal family. She explained that she and Prince William endeavored to manage the situation privately for the sake of their young children — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, …

Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano’s feud on Charmed – a timeline of their friendship and fallout

It is so often heard that cast and crews on TV shows and movies become ‘like a family’ while away from weeks and months at a time on a project, so it is always the subject of fascination when this isn’t quite the case. Shannen Doherty Recounts On-Set Fight With ‘90210’ Co-Star Jennie Garth

Shannen Doherty rehashed more co-star drama this week, this time stemming from the set of Beverly Hills, 90210. The actress recounted a prank gone wrong between herself and co-star Jennie Garth during a conversation on her Let’s Be Clear podcast with fellow 90210 star Brian Austin Green. “[Jennie] was doing, she was calling it ‘Pants-Down Day,’ where she would pull the pants on some of the crewmembers in a funny way,” Doherty recalled of her time on the 90210 set. “But some of them were getting pretty annoyed with it.” In response, Doherty said, “I reversed it and I said, ‘Skirt-Up Day.’ And she always wore the men’s Calvin Klein boxer shorts under her clothes, so I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. And so I did ‘Skirt-Up Day’ and oh my God, she lost it on me, and I was just not in the mood to back down.” Green also remembered the fight between the two women, calling it a “huge moment for everyone” and saying he and actor Ian Ziering …

‘Am I surprised Pete Doherty is still alive? No, he’s too smart to die’: the Libertines on feuds, friendship – and their unlikely sober reunion | The Libertines

I have done battle with the Libertines three times over the past 19 years. Only I haven’t, not really. Two of the interviews were with Pete Doherty for projects away from the band that made him famous: Babyshambles and the Puta Madres. The first was in a mangy London hotel bedroom in 2005 – he was sitting on a motorbike, revving it up, when he was awake. Much of the time he was asleep. He was 26, surrounded by drugs paraphernalia, and had daubed “ROUGH TRADE” on the wall in his own blood. Last time we met, four years ago, he was in better nick and more sociable. That said, he was still smoking crack, threw a punch that just missed me, kissed my forehead by way of apology, and took me to his wreck of a house where he tried to flog me his possessions. He still had something about him: a wasted brilliance and surprising charm that he failed to hide, despite his best efforts. As for his soul brother and sparring partner …
