Two poems, four years in detention: the Chinese dissident who smuggled his writing out of prison | Censorship

Most of my manuscripts are locked up in the filing cabinets of the ministry of security, and the agents there study and ponder them repeatedly, more carefully than the creator himself. The guys working this racket have superb memories; a certain chief of the Chengdu public security bureau can still recite the poems I published in an underground magazine in the 1980s. While the literati write nostalgically, hoping to go down in literary history, the real history may be locked in the vaults of the security department. The above is excerpted from my book June 4: My Testimony, published in Taiwan in 2011. I wrote that book three times, the later drafts on paper much better than the paper I used for writing in prison, which was so soft and brittle I had to write very lightly. Paper outside prison is solid and flexible enough that you don’t have to worry about puncturing it with the tip of a pen. Thus, I restrained myself and filled in a page of paper, and then how many thousand – ten …

Iran Risks Further Backlash for Death Sentence of Dissident Rapper, Says German MP

Iran Risks Further Backlash for Death Sentence of Dissident Rapper, Says German MP

Washington —  Iran’s handing of a death sentence this week for dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi has drawn outrage from the Islamic republic’s domestic and international critics, including a German lawmaker who says Tehran risks fueling the backlash if it moves toward executing the artist. In an interview for the Friday edition of VOA’s Flashpoint Global Crises program, German parliament member Ye-One Rhie said the Iranian government is using the death sentence to monitor who is still reacting to developments in Salehi’s case and how they are reacting. Rhie has been acting as a “political sponsor” or advocate for the 33-year-old Iranian singer since shortly after his initial arrest in October 2022. “The Islamic Republic of Iran is testing the waters,” Rhie said, noting that Tehran did the same when it staged an unprecedented aerial assault on Israel earlier this month. Israeli forces largely thwarted the attack with military assistance from a coalition of Western allies and Arab neighbors. Iranian state-approved newspaper Shargh first reported the death sentence against Salehi in an article published Wednesday, citing …

Donald Trump Dubs Himself a “Political Dissident” in CPAC Speech

Donald Trump Dubs Himself a “Political Dissident” in CPAC Speech

In his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday, former President Donald Trump cast the 2024 presidential election as a quasi-religious day of reckoning for his political opponents.  “For hard-working Americans, Nov. 5 will be our new Liberation Day,” he said. “But for the liars, and cheaters, and fraudsters, and censors and imposters who have commandeered our government, it will be their Judgment Day.” The line underscored the apocalyptic tone that suffused Trump’s speech, which was peppered with warnings of “hoards of illegal aliens stampeding across our borders,” Hamas coming to “terrorize our streets,” and the utter “collapse” of public services including education and healthcare. “If crooked Joe Biden and his thugs win in 2024, the worst is yet to come,” Trump said. “Our country will go and sink to levels that were unimaginable.” “When we win, the curtain closes on their corrupt reign, and the sun rises on a bright new future for America,” he added. “I believe it’s our last chance.” Throughout his campaign, Trump has consistently portrayed himself as …

Alexey Navalny Never Wanted to Be a Russian Dissident

Alexey Navalny Never Wanted to Be a Russian Dissident

Long viewed in the West as Russia’s best chance for a democratic future, Navalny, whose health has suffered, is now at grave risk of dying in captivity. Even his lawyers — who served as his final lifeline to the outside world — have been targeted for arrest and prosecution. At the same time, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has forced Navalny to take up strong antiwar positions that make it unlikely he can ever win elective office in Russia, even if he were to regain his freedom. Among Ukrainians, Navalny’s outspoken criticism of the war is viewed, in part, as a self-serving effort to maintain publicity on his own case. And in Russia, where thousands of families have lost husbands, fathers, sons and brothers in a war that Putin and the Russian Orthodox have proclaimed a just and necessary fight, Navalny’s views seem antipatriotic. For years, Navalny has cheered Ukrainians for demanding democracy in the streets during the Orange Revolution of 2004-05 and the Maidan Revolution in 2013-14, wishing that Russians would come together in a …

Dissident Russian Rockers Held in Thailand Fly to Israel, Band Says

Bangkok —  A dissident Russian-Belarusian rock band held in Thailand on immigration charges have left the kingdom to fly to Israel, according to a post Thursday on the group’s official Facebook page. Bi-2 have criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, and their arrest sparked fears they would be deported to Russia where they would face persecution. Thailand’s National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, took charge of the case on Wednesday, and early Thursday the band’s Facebook page confirmed they had left the country. “All musicians of the Bi-2 group have safely left Thailand and are heading to Tel Aviv,” read the post. Several members of the band have dual nationalities, including Israeli and Australian. On Wednesday, the band said singer Egor Bortnik, known by his stage name Lyova, had already left Thailand to fly to Israel. The band were held last week after they played a gig on Phuket, a southern island popular with Russian holidaymakers. Thai officials said they were arrested for performing without the correct work …

Fears for dissident musicians who have criticised Vladimir Putin following arrests in Thailand | Ents & Arts News

Members of a dissident rock band critical of the war in Ukraine – including a musician who has been living in the UK for a year – are facing possible deportation from Thailand to Russia, according to campaigners and officials. Seven members of the self-exiled band Bi-2 were arrested for working without a permit following a show in the Thai resort island of Phuket, several officials told the Reuters news agency. Human rights activists and friends fear they will be severely punished if they are sent to Moscow. Image: Members of Bi-2 on stage in Moscow in 2011. Pic: AP/Pavel Golovkin The arrested artists include classically trained pianist Gleb Kolyadin, a session musician who joins the band for some live shows and has lived in East Sussex on a global talent visa since January last year, after leaving Russia when the war started. Kolyadin, 34, also performs as one half of The Morning Band, a chamber progressive rock duo, with Marjana Semkina, who has lived in the UK since 2020. She fears her bandmate and …

Ecuador Police Capture Leader of Colombian Dissident Rebel Group

Ecuador Police Capture Leader of Colombian Dissident Rebel Group

QUITO (Reuters) – Ecuador’s police on Monday said they have captured the leader of Colombian armed group Oliver Sinisterra and that Ecuadorean authorities will return him to Colombia. News of the capture comes amid a military offensive launched by Ecuador’s government to combat criminal gangs. President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency with nighttime curfew for 60 days at the beginning of January amid spiraling violence in the Andean country and designated 22 criminal bands as terrorist groups. Carlos L, known as El Gringo, was captured on Sunday night in Imbabura, in the north of Ecuador, following three months of preparations by security forces. “An immigration hearing will be held so that he can be expelled from Ecuador and sent to Colombia,” Ecuador police commander Cesar Zapata told reporters. “He has a pretty hefty criminal record.” Zapata has spoken with Colombian police to coordinate the handover, he said. Carlos L was involved in criminal activities in Ecuador, police said, especially with terrorist groups in San Lorenzo near the border with Colombia. Oliver Sinisterra is …
