Macron and Starmer to discuss Ukraine as Trump looms – POLITICO

LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host French President Emmanuel Macron for talks Thursday as the two leaders await the inauguration of Donald Trump as U.S. president. No. 10 Downing Street announced Wednesday that the pair would meet at Chequers, the prime minister’s country retreat, and discuss Ukraine — a hot-button topic in the incoming U.S. administration — as well as artificial intelligence, economic growth and legal migration. Both Macron and Starmer have been vocal supporters of Ukraine’s pushback against Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, and stressed the need for continued backing since the far more sceptical Trump’s November win. Trump has vowed to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, an idea given short shrift in European capitals. Source link

In Idaho, locals meet to discuss Christian nationalist church’s growing influence

In Idaho, locals meet to discuss Christian nationalist church’s growing influence

MOSCOW, Idaho (FāVS News) — Nearly 200 residents of this northern Idaho town gathered Tuesday night (Dec. 17) to discuss combating Christian nationalism, joined by a podcaster who is investigating the growing influence of Christian nationalist leader Doug Wilson in the community. In the second season of his podcast “Extremely American,” Heath Druzin has been looking into the activities of Wilson’s Christ Church and its role in the extremist movement. Titled “Onward Christian Soldiers,” the season has already topped 1 million downloads. Druzin explained to the crowd that Wilson, 71, who runs the Community of Reformed Evangelical Churches, a Calvinist church group, and an education empire that includes 500 “classical” Christian schools, is more influential nationally than locally.  But Christ Church, whose relationship with Moscow dates back to the 1970s, has been growing slowly over the decades. Today the church has between 800-900 members in the 25,000-person town. Those members own about 20% of the city’s downtown buildings, according to the podcast. The church’s growth has caused a divide in the community, especially as Wilson …

Philosophy at school gives young people the tools to discuss difficult topics such as the Israel-Gaza war

The first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the beginning of conflict in Gaza left UK schools with a dilemma: how to mark the event. It has affected many around the world, including school children and their families in the UK. Earlier in 2024, government adviser on social cohesion, Sara Khan, suggested that schools were not supporting reasonable debate about the Israel-Gaza conflict because teachers are nervous about handling such a sensitive topic in the classroom. But if schools shut down the topic they risk encouraging mistrust, anger, hate and polarisation. Not least because students will instead seek out information online – and are quite likely to stumble upon fake news and conspiracy theories. The leader of the UK’s biggest education union, Daniel Kebede, recently noted that there simply isn’t enough space in the curriculum for students to discuss such difficult issues. He claims the solution is to embed philosophy as a subject across England’s school curriculum. The subject of philosophy is specifically set up to promote critical thinking skills and …

Zelenskyy meets Pope Francis at Vatican to discuss humanitarian situation in Ukraine

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Pope Francis and his advisers at the Vatican on Friday (Oct. 11), where he said they discussed the hostage situation in Ukraine and the means to promote peace. The Vatican was the third stop of Zelenskyy’s 48-hour, four-city tour of Europe, after London and Paris, where he hopes to secure financial and political support for his “victory plan.” He met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday, and after the meeting with the pope, he left for Berlin on the same day. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has led to almost 1 million deaths, though reports vary according to the source. Many Ukrainians have been taken hostage by Russian forces, and Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna was reported to have died in a Moscow prison on Sept. 19. “The issue of our people returning home from captivity was the main issue during the meeting with Pope Francis. We count on the assistance of the Holy See in the return home of Ukrainians …

Brady Corbet, Adrien Brody Discuss Ambitious Epic The Brutalist

Brady Corbet, Adrien Brody Discuss Ambitious Epic The Brutalist

The Venice Film Festival is buzzing over director Brady Corbet’s monumental historical drama The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce. The film won’t officially premiere until Sunday night, but the thunderous applause and rapt excitement that followed the film out of its first press screenings on the Lido has many festival-goers speculating that it’s the movie to beat for this year’s Golden Lion.  With a 3.5-hour runtime and a ten-minute intermission in the middle, the film has all the thematic heft and intellectual rigor befitting its subject: the historical trauma and artistic vision that gave rise to the great works of mid-century American Brutalist architecture.  The Brutalist chronicles the journey of Hungarian-born Jewish architect, László Tóth (Brody), who emigrates to the United States in 1947 to experience the “American dream.” Initially forced to toil in poverty, he soon wins a contract with a mysterious and wealthy client, Harrison Lee Van Buren (Pearce), that will change the course of the next 30 years of his life. Jones co-stars as Tóth’s wife Erzsébet while Joe Alwyn plays the rich …

University bosses to visit Downing Street to discuss campus antisemitism | Universities

University bosses are to attend a Downing Street summit to discuss antisemitism on campuses, as Palestinian solidarity protests continue to escalate at UK universities, with 10 students now vowing to go on hunger strike. Rishi Sunak told his cabinet on Tuesday that there had been an “unacceptable rise in antisemitism” on campuses and vice-chancellors would meet to talk about “the need for our universities to be safe for our Jewish students”. Three students at the University of Edinburgh said they had begun a hunger strike, with seven more planning to join them after months of trying to pressure their institution to divest from companies supplying arms to Israel. “What was already an urgent call for divestment has become so much more urgent all of a sudden, especially with the attack on Rafah right now,” said a fourth-year Palestinian student who did not want to be identified. The student, who said 15 members of her extended family had been killed in Gaza since the 7 October attacks, added: “We feel a hunger strike is the only …
