Diamonds Are Not Forever? Shirley Bassey auctions jewellery | UK News

She once sang Diamonds Are Forever – but Dame Shirley Bassey is now selling hers. The Welsh singer, 87, is auctioning some of her “meaningful” jewels, including a diamond ring given to her by Sir Elton John. But anyone who wants the diamonds on their Goldfinger had better be a Big Spender. Top lots from her collection include a diamond necklace, estimated to sell for between €270,000 and €320,000 (£232,420 and £275,460), and a diamond and gold parure (matched set of ornaments) created by Cartier, estimated to fetch between €200,000 and €250,000 (£172,170 and £215,210). Image: Pic: Sotheby’s/PA There is also a yellow diamond ring, which could fetch between €165,000 and €200,000 (£142,030 and £172,150), and an aquamarine, sapphire, diamond, and gem set estimated to sell for between €60,000 and €70,000 (£51,640 and £60,250). Dame Shirley said the collection of jewellery includes pieces she bought for herself to commemorate significant moments – including performing at her first Royal Variety Performance in front of the late Queen. “Collecting jewellery for me is like collecting memories and …

Doja Cat Shops for Diamonds While Wearing Bed Sheet Look and Thong, Suffers Wardrobe Malfunction

Doja Cat Shops for Diamonds While Wearing Bed Sheet Look and Thong, Suffers Wardrobe Malfunction

Doja Cat seems to be taking the “Sleeping Beauties” theme of this week’s 2024 Met Gala very seriously.  The 28-year-old rapper, whose real name is Amala Raina Zandile Dlamini, shared photos and video of herself and fashion designer Guram Gvasalia shopping for jewelry ahead of the annual fashion event.  In one clip, Doja Cat is holding what appears to be a white bedsheet around her with black Christian Louboutin heels. She drops one part of the sheet, exposing a black G-string thong.  In one photo, Doja Cat hugs Gvasalia, showing off a diamond teardrop necklace hanging on her bare back.  It appears that the bedsheet look is actually a dress designed by the fashion label Vetements, as one of the photo features a tag from the brand attached to the white fabric.  Doja Cat even wore the look out on the rainy New York streets, sharing photos of herself and Gvasalia walking out of the store as assistants covered them with umbrellas.  On Sunday night, Doja Cat and Gvasalia were spotted attending Anna Wintour’s pre-Met …

Supercomputers predict the existence of even harder ‘Super Diamonds’ on alien planets

Supercomputers predict the existence of even harder ‘Super Diamonds’ on alien planets

Diamond is renowned for its unparalleled strength, but another form of carbon that could potentially surpass it in toughness. (CREDIT: Creative Commons) Diamond is renowned for its unparalleled strength, but scientists have long speculated about another form of carbon that could potentially surpass it in toughness. This elusive material, known as the eight-atom body-centered cubic (BC8) crystal, has been predicted to exhibit even greater resistance to compression than diamond. However, the challenge lies in creating it here on Earth. BC8, while distinct from diamond, shares many similarities with it. Predicted to be 30% stronger than diamond, BC8 could be considered a super-diamond if it could be produced under normal conditions. Theoretically, BC8 is deemed the most stable phase of carbon under immense pressures exceeding 10 million atmospheres. “The BC8 phase of carbon at ambient conditions would be a new super-hard material that would likely be tougher than diamond,” explained Ivan Oleynik, a physics professor at the University of South Florida (USF). Supercomputer simulations predicting the synthesis pathways for the elusive BC8 “super-diamond”, involving shock compressions …

Why supersonic, diamond-spewing volcanoes might be coming back to life

Why supersonic, diamond-spewing volcanoes might be coming back to life

Twenty years ago, deep beneath Botswana’s Kalahari desert, Thomas Gernon found himself walking in what seemed like hell. The temperature soared as the sound of explosions echoed off the walls. “It was like a baptism of fire,” he says. It was his first trip into a kimberlite diamond mine. The place teemed with cameras and Gernon, now at the University of Southampton in the UK, had been warned of trouble should any gemstones be found – accidentally or otherwise – on his person. But he wasn’t here to find his fortune. He wanted an answer to one of Earth’s greatest mysteries. Diamonds are precious to many, but they hold a special place in the hearts of geologists. They were forged long ago in the fiery depths of Earth’s inaccessible mantle, brought to the surface by riding on supersonic jets of magma from bizarre volcanoes called kimberlites. We don’t know much about precisely how diamonds formed, but we do know they are like time capsules that can teach us the secrets of our planet’s distant past. …

The club have not named the player but they issued a statement on Saturday night within hours of the incident. “AFC Rushden & Diamonds are aware of an incident in the bar between a first-team player and a supporter following this afternoon’s defeat to Lye Town,” said the statement. “The player in question has had his registration with the club cancelled with immediate effect and will not feature for the club going forward. What Made ‘I’m Just Ken’ So Lovable at the Oscars

What Made ‘I’m Just Ken’ So Lovable at the Oscars

Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken” was the most lovable Oscars music moment in years. Patrick T. Fallon / AFP / Getty March 11, 2024, 10:22 AM ET Must songs written for movies be serious? Each year the Oscar for Best Original Song nominations over-index on hushed ballads and motivational anthems—music that’s built sturdily, predictably, for utilitarian purposes. “I’m Just Ken,” the Barbie track performed by the actor Ryan Gosling, takes that tradition and skews it. Part piano confessional and part prog-metal rockout, it’s a deeply silly song about self-seriousness. Last night’s rendition of it was an irony-meets-sincerity cyclone of the highest order, making for the most lovable Oscars music moment in years. Beginning his act while seated in the audience, with a cowboy hat obscuring his impossibly angled features, Gosling was in character as the woebegone Ken, a macho hunk doomed to play beta in the toy netherworld of Barbie. He sang over the shoulder of his co-star Margot Robbie, who was not in character. She let out a genuine-seeming giggle, which set …

From £35 crystals to £30,000 diamonds: the jaw-dropping rise of tooth jewellery | Beauty

From £35 crystals to £30,000 diamonds: the jaw-dropping rise of tooth jewellery | Beauty

It’s Imogen Campbell’s first time having tooth gems, although she booked the appointment twice. She got cold feet ahead of the first one, worried what her employers might think. “I was a bit hesitant, because I work in financial services,” says the 25-year-old. “It’s very old-school, you know, people wearing suits and stuff to work. Obviously, I’m kind of like this …” she says, gesturing at her baggy trousers and padded jacket. Campbell is now feeling braver, and is here at a tooth-gem studio in east London armed with sketches of her dream dental designs. Musician Nia Archives models grills made by Playground Ldn. “People are starting to be a bit more daring and comfortable expressing themselves,” she says. “People have tattoos; why can’t I wear tooth gems?” If you hadn’t noticed, tooth jewellery is having a moment – not just the discreet gems seen in the 1990s and 2000s, but flashy removable “grills” that can stretch right across the front teeth. Encouraged by the way that many employers have loosened or abandoned dress codes …

Scientists put Jared Diamond’s continental axis hypothesis to the test — here’s what they found

Scientists put Jared Diamond’s continental axis hypothesis to the test — here’s what they found

In a groundbreaking study examining one of the most influential theories of cultural evolution and geographic determinism, a team of ecologists and cultural evolutionists from the United States, Germany, and New Zealand has undertaken an extensive examination of Jared Diamond’s hypothesis on the axis of orientation. The findings have been published in the journal Evolutionary Human Sciences. Their research, drawing upon a vast array of cultural, environmental, and linguistic databases, challenges the notion that Eurasia’s geographic layout inherently facilitated a quicker spread of critical innovations compared to other regions of the world, such as the Americas and Africa. Jared Diamond, in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Guns, Germs, and Steel, proposed that the differing fates of societies across the globe could largely be attributed to geographical luck. According to Diamond, the east-west axis of Eurasia provided a unique advantage for the spread of agriculture, technology, and innovations due to its relatively uniform climates and day lengths over vast distances. This contrasted sharply with the predominantly north-south orientation of the Americas and Africa, where varying climates and …
