An influential member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition told settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank that the government is engaged in a stealthy effort to irreversibly change the way the territory is governed, to cement Israel’s control over it without being accused of formally annexing it. In a taped recording of the speech, the official, Bezalel Smotrich, can be heard suggesting at a private event earlier this month that the goal was to prevent the West Bank from becoming part of a Palestinian state. “I’m telling you, it’s mega-dramatic,” Mr. Smotrich told the settlers. “Such changes change a system’s DNA.” While Mr. Smotrich’s opposition to ceding control over the West Bank is no secret, the Israeli government’s official position is that the West Bank’s status remains open to negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. CANBERRA, Australia — Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday described domestic violence as a “national crisis” after thousands rallied around the country against violence toward women. Thousands protested in cities around Australia on Sunday to draw attention to the deaths of 27 women so far this year allegedly caused by acts of gender-based violence in a population of 27 million. Albanese said on Monday the rallies were a call to action for all levels of Australian government to do more to prevent gender-based violence. “Quite clearly, we need to do more. It’s not enough to just have empathy,” Albanese told Nine Network television. “The fact that … a woman dies every four days on average at the hand of a partner is just a national crisis,” he added. There were 17 rallies held across Australia over the weekend, with an estimated 15,000 people demonstrating in the city of Melbourne. Donald Trump appeared momentarily amused in court on Thursday during a particular piece of testimony from former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, according to a CNN reporter. Reporting from outside the Manhattan courthouse, CNN’s Brynn Gingras said that the former president had appeared disengaged during many parts of the court proceedings. She said he was sitting back in his chair with his eyes shut, occasionally conferring with his attorney. But Pecker’s testimony about a January 2017 meeting at Trump Tower got his attention. The mother of a man who was murdered by his girlfriend and buried in their garden has described the moment she was unknowingly just a few feet away from his body. Three women were likely infected with HIV while receiving so-called vampire facials at a New Mexico spa, marking the first known HIV cases transmitted via cosmetic injections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report Thursday. The first HIV case linked to the VIP Spa in Albuquerque was discovered in 2018 and prompted the New Mexico Department of Health to offer free testing to anyone who got injections at the facility. The department said at the time that the spa was shut down after its investigators “identified practices that could potentially spread blood-borne infections.” The most recent case was a former client of the spa who tested positive for HIV last year, according to the health department —which led it to reopen the prior investigation. Now, the CDC report provides new detail about the affected clients and the spa’s practices. The first case was a middle-aged woman who tested positive for HIV in 2018, the CDC said.
