Victoria Derbyshire Leaves Minister Squirming As She Explains Why Young People Don’t Vote Tory

[ad_1] AFP Putin warns of ‘serious consequences’ if Western arms strike Russia President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that there would be “serious consequences” if Western countries allowed Ukraine to use their weapons to strike targets in Russia, as sought by Kyiv. The warning came as French President Emmanuel Macron said Kyiv should be allowed to “neutralise” Russian military bases from where Kremlin troops are firing missiles into Ukraine, and as President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the world not to tire of the war.Putin’s comments came after some NATO members as well as the alliance’s chief Jens Stoltenberg have called to allow Ukraine to use their arms to step up attacks on Russian soil, after more than two years of war.”This constant escalation can lead to serious consequences,” Putin said during a visit to Uzbekistan.”In Europe, especially in small countries, they should be aware of what they are playing with,” he said, noting that many European countries had “small territory” and a “dense population”.”And this factor, which they should keep in mind before they talk about striking deep …

Farmer arrested as man shot dead and another injured after ‘burglary’ | UK | News

[ad_1] A farmer has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a man was shot dead and another seriously injured following a “burglary” in a quiet rural village. Police were called following reports of a break-in at a remote farmhouse in Whaley Bridge in the Peak District, in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday. A man was found with fatal injuries while another man was found seriously wounded on the road near to the property. Officers say both men sustained gun shot wounds. A cordon around Eccles Road was put up by officers from Derbyshire Constabulary. The injured man was taken to hospital where police say he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary. Another man was later arrested on suspicion of the same offence when police stopped a car on the A6 near to Chapel-en-le-frith, in Derbyshire. Two cordons remain in place at two houses in Eccles Road and, police say, will remain in place for some time while investigations continue. Eccles Road is currently closed from the junction …

Victoria Derbyshire Slams Tory Priorities Amid Rwanda Bill Push

Victoria Derbyshire Slams Tory Priorities Amid Rwanda Bill Push

[ad_1] Victoria Derbyshire took aim at the government last night by pointing out how the Rwanda deportation bill appears to have taken priority over the ongoing problems with trying alleged rapists. The BBC Newsnight presenter cornered Tory MP, Kieran Mullan, over the controversial legislation, which passed through parliament on Monday night. Derbyshire pointed out how PM Rishi Sunak has prepared a substantial body of legal experts to deal with the opposition the bill is expected to face. She said: “The fact that you’ve magically found 150 judges and 25 court rooms, and they may be able to offer 5,000 sitting days, perhaps tells us – when we’ve got such a backlog – that it’s a priority for you to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, more of a priority than trying alleged rapists?” The Rwanda bill was first proposed by Boris Johnson more two years ago, but it was soon challenged by the Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights – and the government are clearly expecting more resistance now it has gone through …

The tragic death of Maureen Gilbert: why did a much-loved mother die in her flooded home? | Derbyshire

The tragic death of Maureen Gilbert: why did a much-loved mother die in her flooded home? | Derbyshire

[ad_1] The flood alert was issued on the morning of 21 October 2023. Storm Babet was coming. Be prepared. Paul Gilbert, a 47-year-old landscape gardener from Chesterfield in Derbyshire, did what he always did when a flood alert came in: he went to check on his mum, Maureen. Maureen lived on Tapton Terrace, a narrow row of red‑brick terrace houses yards from the River Rother in Chesterfield. Everyone who lives on the terrace, as residents call it, knew Maureen: she was an institution. She had lived there all of her 83 years, first at number 19, her parents’ house, and then at number 21, the house she moved to when she married Gilbert’s dad in 1975. Because Maureen worked nights as a cleaner in a hotel and Gilbert’s dad worked early mornings on the railways, for many years Maureen slept downstairs on the sofa. She was a sturdy, trustworthy sort of person. “She would always keep mine and my brother’s secrets,” says Gilbert. “Never would tell my dad anything. Even when we used to skive off school …

Family pays tribute to woman, 21, who died after attack in Derbyshire | UK news

[ad_1] The family of a 21-year-old woman who died at a flat in Derbyshire have said she will be “missed beyond words”. Derbyshire constabulary said officers were called to reports that a woman had been assaulted at a home in Greenhill Lane, Riddings, at shortly after 1pm on 18 February. Christine Everett-Hickson, better known as Chrissie, was taken to hospital and died in the early hours of the morning five days later. Kain Tailby, 30, has been charged with murder, the force said. Before her death, Tailby – who was arrested at the scene – was charged with attempted murder. Tributes from Everett-Hickson’s family described her as a “joyful, kind-hearted and affectionate” woman whose death would “leave a void in our family that will never be filled”. In a statement, the family said she would be “missed beyond words” and that she had “one of life’s purest hearts”. The statement said: “Her charming nature always sought out the best in everyone and everything. Her bubbly though occasionally shy personality highlighted her passion for animals, creativity, …

Victoria Derbyshire Skewers Minister Over Tax Cut Claims

Victoria Derbyshire Skewers Minister Over Tax Cut Claims

[ad_1] Victoria Derbyshire suggested the government is “gaslighting the British people” after the chancellor unveiled this year’s Budget on Wednesday. The BBC presenter pressured Treasury minister Gareth Davies over the Conservatives’ suggestion that tax burdens were going to fall on Newsnight. “We are starting to turn a corner,” Davies began, claiming that was why the government was now able to cut taxes. In reality, the government has only reduced the National Insurance contributions for workers – fiscal drag means people are still going to be paying higher taxes overall. As Derbyshire said: “How are we turning a corner when we’re in recession and the tax burden, despite what you’ve done today, is continuing to rise? The trajectory is up?” “We absolutely accept that taxes are still too high,” the minister replied. Derbyshire pointed out taxes are set to rise into the next parliament, adding: “So when Jeremy Hunt says keeping taxes down matters to the Conservatives, it kind of sounds like you’re gaslighting the British people.” “Not at all, we are focusing our tax cuts …

However, I want to be clear that the two individuals involved in this incident are known to one another, and officers have mitigated any risk to the wider public at this time. “Any further updates will be passed as soon as the investigation allows.” According to MailOnline, the field where Mr Kinston was shot was not owned by him but was near to his farm. ‘Renowned farmer’ Many in the local community have paid tribute, with friends recalling going on expeditions for the Duke of Edinburgh Award with him, playing rugby together, and an “intensely funny” character. Bradley Ward says nan Freda Jones has been “blaming herself” after her beloved pet Guinness, a two-year-old mini Schnauzer, died during the vicious attack in South Normanton, Derbyshire. The shocking incident left the 77-year-old with a bloody injury to her wrist after one of the dogs latched onto her arm before “dragging her along the ground,” reports DerbyshireLive. Bradley, 27, said: “She was walking Guinness at around 10am like she does every morning. “She heard loud barking from one of the nearby properties before a loud crash saw one of the dogs burst through a fence, with the other following behind. “She was dragged along the floor and was completely helpless at that moment.” Bradley says a neighbour rushed onto the street after hearing the order.
