The Fall Guy review: Ryan Gosling is a screwball delight in this sweat-drenched stunt spectacle

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Not to jinx it, but it looks as if the backlash against Hollywood’s overreliance on CGI has finally arrived. First came the high-profile failures of several digitally drenched, characterless sequels – think Aquaman 2 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Then came the Sag-Aftra strikes, which saw actors push back against the use of AI to replicate their image, while multiple news stories surfaced alleging exploitative working conditions for VFX artists. And, now, suddenly, it seems in vogue for directors like Tim Burton to boast about the lack of CGI in their movies. Could it be that good, old-fashioned, practical moviemaking is finally back in style? David Leitch’s The Fall Guy, then, is ideally timed. It’s a sweat-drenched spectacle that celebrates the harmonious union between heart-stopping stunt work and charismatic movie stars. Ryan Gosling, still high on that Kenergy, embraces his uncanny ability to be both the coolest …

London’s best fish and chips , from Fryer’s Delight to Fish Central

A Stoke Newington favourite from a family who run a fishmongers on the same street, this chirpy chippy now also has branches in Hackney and Islington. Classic cod, haddock and plaice are deep-fried, salmon, mackerel and sea bass are grilled, while elsewhere, whitebait comes breaded, calamari battered and prawns tempura’d, plus pretty much everything is prepared in house, from the hand-peeled chips to the homemade condiments. The chip shop now also boasts a vegan menu at all locations, with a varied selection of fried “fish” including banana blossom, tofish and “scampi”, alongside a mock “prawn” cocktail and a fishcake with no fish. Sutton & Sons is licensed, too, with a short selection of big-name beers and a trio of house wines. Source link

Queen Camilla can’t contain her delight as she’s photobombed by adorable one-year-old | Royal | News

Queen Camilla’s visit to Northern Ireland was overshadowed by an unexpected tuxedo-wearing one-year-old during her meeting with the owners of a Belfast bakery. As part of an engagement to showcase local businesses in the area, Camilla had popped into Knotts Bakery on Lisburn Road in Belfast where she met with owner William Corrie and his wife, former Miss Northern Ireland and Blue Peter presenter, Zoe Salmon. The star of the show, however, was their one-year-old son, Fitzwilliam Corrie-Salmon, who could not take his eyes off the cameras and television equipment that had followed the Queen into the bakery. The Queen chuckled saying “we’ve got a natural for the cameras” as she watched him in amusement. The Telegraph reports Camilla joked he would be “kept in order” by others in the family business, as he continued to pose for the cameras and stroll around his parents’ shop. Owners William and Zoe gave a smiling Queen Camilla a tour of the bakery and she left with a gift of their fruit loaf and iced Madeira cake, adding …

What makes the situation even more vulnerable is to be among the group that Blount calls “the singing-impaired.” Some research suggests that it’s easier to improve a singing voice than you might think. But even for those whose prognosis is hopeless, there’s joy to be found in the act of singing. Today’s newsletter explores how the singing voice actually works, and what humans can create when we sing together. Sign up here to get it every Saturday morning. In the 1887 essay “Silent People as Misjudged by the Noisy,” an Atlantic contributor proposed an economical approach to talking: “As we get on in life past the period of obstreperous youth, we incline to talk less and write less, especially on the topics which we have most at heart,” the writer noted. “We are beginning to realize the uselessness of perpetually talking … If there is a thing to be said, we prefer to wait and say it only when and where it will hit something or somebody.” Many of us wish we were better at waiting to speak until we knew our words would “hit something or somebody” exactly how we want them to.
