In Vatican summit’s final document, delegates call for more lay and female church leaders

In Vatican summit’s final document, delegates call for more lay and female church leaders

VATICAN CITY (RNS) – After three years of discussions at every level of the Catholic Church, a summit of Catholic bishops and lay people at the Vatican ended Saturday (Oct. 26), with the publication of a document laying out a vision for structural reform of the church and calling for the hierarchy to make more room for lay leaders, especially women. The final document of Vatican Synod on Synodality presented pathways to a more inclusive and transparent church that gives all Catholics a say on the future of the institution. It proposed changes to canon law that would allow lay people to be better heard by their bishops, national bishops’ conferences and even the pope. The 52-page document serves as the final statement on the summit, which brought nearly 400 prelates, lay Catholics, nuns and brothers to Rome for the past month. Pope Francis announced that he will not publish an ‘apostolic exhortation’ as is customary at the end of a synod. The pope signed Saturday’s document instead, suggesting that it constitutes official church teaching. …

DNC votes to restore New Hampshire’s delegates for this summer’s convention

DNC votes to restore New Hampshire’s delegates for this summer’s convention

The Democratic National Committee voted Tuesday to reinstate New Hampshire’s delegates ahead of this summer’s convention in Chicago, ending months of fighting over the state’s 2024 presidential primary.   “We as a committee and as a national committee have gone through a difficult number of weeks and months of getting to this point, and I know that New Hampshire has gone through a difficult number of weeks and months where some things we’d like to have seen take place did not,” Jim Roosevelt, the co-chair of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee, said during a meeting on Tuesday. “As it happens, all that is behind us now. We have worked out compliance with our rules and with the charter.” New Hampshire, which has a state law on the books requiring it to hold the first presidential primary, had refused to comply with a new Democratic calendar that moved South Carolina to the front of the line. As a result, President Joe Biden did not file to appear on the ballot for New Hampshire’s unsanctioned Jan. 23 …

Trump Picks up More National Delegates as the Only Choice for Wyoming Republicans

Trump Picks up More National Delegates as the Only Choice for Wyoming Republicans

Republicans in Wyoming awarded former President Donald Trump all 29 of their national delegates in a presidential preference poll conducted Saturday. Trump was the only candidate in the poll at the state Republican convention in Cheyenne. National convention rules require delegates be bound to a candidate for at least the first round of voting, but Wyoming Republicans on Saturday decided to bound their delegates to Trump for the first and second rounds of balloting, the state party’s national committeeman Corey Steinmetz said Saturday in a text message. Trump effectively clinched the Republican nomination in March. Twenty three of Wyoming’s national delegates — one from each county in the state — were selected at Republican county conventions that began in February. The remaining six were chosen at the state convention. Photos You Should See – April 2024 Republicans are dominant in Wyoming politics and gave Trump the highest percentage of votes of any state in 2020. Wyoming Democrats gave President Joe Biden all 17 of their national delegates in a similar poll conducted at county caucuses …

Ahead of General Conference, queer United Methodist delegates organize a caucus

Ahead of General Conference, queer United Methodist delegates organize a caucus

(RNS) — The last time the United Methodist Church met for its General Conference, in 2019, there were only seven self-identifying LGBTQ delegates. When the denomination convenes later this month, there will be 26 — enough to form a caucus, which is exactly what they’ve done. The first-ever United Methodist Queer Delegate Caucus will be among the more visible changes when the denomination’s top legislative body convenes April 23-May 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Though the caucus can only be unofficial in a denomination that still views homosexuality as “incompatible with Christian teaching,” it is organized and ready for the spotlight. It has a website, it plans on convening news conferences and it has already ordered T-shirts and pins. After a four-year COVID-19 delay, and the departure of about 25% of its U.S. churches, the United Methodist Church is meeting again and the issue of human sexuality is back on the agenda. The LGBTQ delegates are championing a raft of petitions they hope will eventually lead the U.S. church to extend them greater equality. “Queer …

No Labels delegates vote to continue pursuing a third-party presidential ticket

No Labels delegates vote to continue pursuing a third-party presidential ticket

The third-party organization No Labels held a virtual 800-person delegate meeting Friday, where the members voted to move forward with the process of forming a presidential ticket to run in the 2024 election against President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. While the vote reaffirmed No Labels’ longstanding project, it’s still unclear what happens next. An official ticket was not announced at this meeting, but the group says it is moving forward with discussions with potential individuals. “They voted near unanimously to continue our 2024 project and to move immediately to identify candidates to serve on the Unity presidential ticket. Every one of our delegates had their own explanation for wanting to move ahead,” said No Labels convention chairman Mike Rawlings. The organization said in a statement that it will be “accelerating” its candidate outreach and announcing a process for how candidates will be selected on March 14. A number of people discussed as potential No Labels candidates have taken themselves out of the running. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced last month that he would …

Divided Michigan GOP Finds Common Ground in Awarding All Its Presidential Delegates to Trump

Divided Michigan GOP Finds Common Ground in Awarding All Its Presidential Delegates to Trump

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Republicans awarded all 39 of the state’s remaining presidential delegates to Donald Trump during a convention Saturday, a clear sign of his firm grasp on the party’s base ahead of a November election in the critical swing state. While the Michigan GOP has remained entrenched in division, chaos and legal disputes, Saturday’s convention showed that Trump remains the unifying force between the party’s warring factions. Trump received 1,575 votes from precinct delegates, compared to 36 for Nikki Haley. “Clearly, Michigan is Trump country,” said Michigan GOP Chair Pete Hoekstra, who recently took over the party after former Chair Kristina Karamo was ousted. The win gave a clear indication of Trump’s standing in Michigan ahead of November, but a majority of Michigan’s GOP delegates were awarded Saturday. Trump easily won all 39 of the presidential delegates at play, receiving close to 90% of the vote in all 13 congressional districts. Michigan Republicans were forced to split their primary into two parts after Democrats who control the state government moved Michigan …

How many delegates does each candidate have?

How many delegates does each candidate have?

The primary season is all about delegates, and NPR is keeping track of how many delegates each presidential candidate has. To win the party nomination, a GOP candidate needs a majority of available delegates to vote for them at the Republican National Convention in July. The number they’re aiming for this year is 1,215. Early contests in Iowa and New Hampshire provide a very small percentage of delegates, but they’re important events for candidates who want to gain momentum. Vivek Ramaswamy dropped out of the race on the night of the Iowa caucuses, and Ron DeSantis followed less than a week later. Both endorsed Donald Trump. At each contest, the state Republican Party can allocate delegates with a winner-take-all approach, or proportionally by congressional district. About 36% of delegates will be decided on March 5, or Super Tuesday, and about 70% of Republican delegates will be allocated by the end of March. On the Democrats’ side, since Joe Biden is the incumbent, the delegate process is more of a formality. Delegate numbers shown are maintained …

Vultures circle around Sunak as dead-eyed delegates look on | John Crace

Not so much a party conference. Not even an end of the pier show. More of a funeral wake. At which most of the participants appear to have already died. Four years ago the Tories won an 80-seat majority and looked set to remain in power for another decade. Now they act like the walking dead. Shell-shocked, out of ideas. Desperate to find someone other than themselves to blame for the mess they’ve caused. Desperate to reinvent the unreinventable. To persuade themselves that previous Conservatives weren’t really Conservatives. The story of the one true Tory. Its reputation precedes it. There are only a brave few – we unhappy few – who have made it to Manchester for the Tory conference. Dead-eyed delegates anxious to be sucked into a collective delusion. If only for a few hours. Anything to shake off the reality. The whole conference hall has had to be reconfigured this year. Normally the main hall is situated at the far end. Now it has been transferred to a much smaller venue, in the …
