In Greece, Another Tourist Found Dead Amid Scorching Heat Wave

[ad_1] Greek authorities said on Monday that the body of a missing German man was recovered near a gorge on the island of Crete, the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving tourists undertaking demanding hikes in the scorching heat. At least 10 tourists have gone missing or been found dead this year in similar circumstances, according to Greek authorities. The country has experienced back-to-back heat waves earlier than usual this year, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in many areas for several days in a row. The 67-year-old man’s body was found in “rugged and inaccessible terrain” near the Tripiti Gorge in southwestern Crete, the fire service said in a statement. It was first spotted by a drone on Sunday evening. Early Monday, the fire service sent a helicopter, though it took responders several hours to reach the body. As of Monday, the man’s name and cause of death had not been released. According to Constantina Dimoglidou, a police spokeswoman, the man had contacted his wife early Sunday afternoon, saying …

Bronson Battersby: Boy, 2, found dead next to father’s body died of dehydration, coroner rules | UK News

[ad_1] A two-year-old boy found dead next to the body of his father died of dehydration, a coroner has ruled. Bronson Battersby was discovered dead between the legs of Kenneth Battersby at their home in Skegness, Lincolnshire, in January. An inquest into the toddler’s death was told he “appeared to be quite malnourished” when he was found. A brief hearing at Greater Lincolnshire Coroner’s Court on Thursday was told that the pair’s bodies were discovered after a neighbour called police on the afternoon of 9 January. Bronson’s body was formally identified by a detective sergeant on 15 January, three days after a post-mortem examination carried out at Leicester Royal Infirmary which confirmed his cause of death as dehydration. Image: Bronson Battersby with mum Sarah Piesse Claire Rimmer, a detective inspector of Lincolnshire’s eastern protecting vulnerable persons unit, also gave evidence to the hearing, detailing the circumstances in which Bronson’s body was found. Ms Rimmer said Bronson lived with his father, who had separated from the toddler’s mother, in a basement flat in Prince Alfred Avenue. …

Is dark matter’s main rival theory dead? There’s bad news from the Cassini spacecraft and other recent tests

[ad_1] One of the biggest mysteries in astrophysics today is that the forces in galaxies do not seem to add up. Galaxies rotate much faster than predicted by applying Newton’s law of gravity to their visible matter, despite those laws working well everywhere in the Solar System. To prevent galaxies from flying apart, some additional gravity is needed. This is why the idea of an invisible substance called dark matter was first proposed. But nobody has ever seen the stuff. And there are no particles in the hugely successful Standard Model of particle physics that could be the dark matter – it must be something quite exotic. This has led to the rival idea that the galactic discrepancies are caused instead by a breakdown of Newton’s laws. The most successful such idea is known as Milgromian dynamics or Mond, proposed by Israeli physicist Mordehai Milgrom in 1982. But our recent research shows this theory is in trouble. The main postulate of Mond is that gravity starts behaving differently to what Newton expected when it becomes …

Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder said in a statement that one person died in the storms that hit near the community of around 41,000. “The city of Columbia did appear to avoid the worst of the storm in the city limits but very close by was a different story,” he wrote on social media. Maury Regional Health said it had received five patients, including the person who died. One of the injured was in serious condition and three suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, the hospital in Columbia said. “This is a developing situation with multiple agencies responding,” Maury Regional Health spokesperson Rita Thompson said. The possible tornado that touched down at around 5:55 p.m. tracked for approximately two miles, Maury County Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard Schatz told reporters Wednesday night. “Multiple houses have been completely destroyed,” he said. He said there was one death and multiple injuries, but did …

The Download: Deepfakes of the dead, and why it’s time to embrace fake meat

[ad_1] There are plenty of people like Sun who want to use AI to preserve, animate, and interact with lost loved ones as they mourn and try to heal. The market is particularly strong in China, where at least half a dozen companies are now offering such technologies and thousands of people have already paid for them. But some question whether interacting with AI replicas of the dead is truly a healthy way to process grief, and it’s not entirely clear what the legal and ethical implications of this technology may be. Still, if only 1% of Chinese people can accept AI cloning of the dead, that’s still a huge market. Dozens Still Missing After Monday’s South Africa Building Collapse. 7 Confirmed Dead

[ad_1] GEORGE, South Africa (AP) — Nearly 40 construction workers were still missing Wednesday in the rubble of a building that collapsed in South Africa on Monday as rescue teams continued to search for survivors for a third day in the wreckage of the unfinished five-story apartment complex. Seven workers have been confirmed dead, while authorities in the city of George on South Africa’s south coast released new information on the injuries, saying 16 of the 29 people rescued from the debris were in a critical condition in hospitals and another six had life-threatening injuries. They said 39 workers were still unaccounted for and buried in the rubble of concrete and mangled metal scaffolding. The collapse of the building that was still under construction sparked a desperate rescue effort that has seen specialist disaster response teams brought in from other towns and cities to help. A total of 75 construction workers were at the building site when it came down, the George municipality said. More than 200 rescue personnel continued to search for survivors using …
