How much should we overshare while dating?

How much should we overshare while dating?

Making an online dating profile can feel like creating a Sim for yourself. You list your hobbies, whether you want kids, if you drink or smoke, and other personal details about yourself to be scrutinised by a pool of potential partners. But once the chat turns from getting to know each other, to setting a date to meet in real life, when does sharing who you are veer into oversharing?  How we put ourselves forward online is one thing, but if your ultimate goal in dating is to get into a relationship, what are the rules for oversharing once you actually get into one? Sexualized self-presentation dominates visuals on dating apps, linked to negative body image

Sexualized self-presentation dominates visuals on dating apps, linked to negative body image

Sexualized self-presentation is prevalent on mobile dating apps, particularly in profile pictures, according to research published in Body Image. Mobile dating applications (MDAs) like Tinder and Bumble have reshaped how young adults present themselves to potential partners, such as by prioritizing traits like sexual attractiveness. While research often focuses on MDA usage patterns, less attention has been given to how users engage in sexualized self-presentation. Drawing on theories like the Hyper-Personal Model and Goffman’s Dramaturgical Model, Femke Konings and colleagues investigated how factors such as gender, sexual orientation, and body image influence this behavior. This study employed a data donation linkage design. A total of 443 participants (ages 18-30), predominantly women (72%), shared screenshots of their profiles from MDAs. These submissions included 1,277 profile pictures and 443 biographies. The researchers developed a comprehensive codebook to systematically assess indicators of sexualized self-presentation, both in textual and visual cues. Textual elements included references to sexual activity, body parts, or casual sex motivations, while visual cues captured features like revealing clothing, sexualized body poses, and facial expressions. Coders …

Relationships formed on dating apps are as strong as those formed in person, study finds

A recent study published in the journal Social Sciences suggests that romantic relationships initiated through dating apps are not significantly different in quality compared to those formed in person. These findings challenge lingering societal perceptions that app-based relationships are inherently less genuine or meaningful. Over the past decade, dating apps have surged in popularity, becoming one of the most common ways people meet potential partners. Despite this trend, online-initiated relationships have historically faced skepticism. Critics argue that such relationships may prioritize physical attraction over emotional connection or be hampered by issues like dishonesty in online profiles. “Since earning my PhD, I have been fascinated by the integration of technology in relationships, families, and development,” said study author Mickey Langlais, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Sciences and Design at Baylor University. “One facet that particularly caught my interest was the increased reliance on dating applications, often used to help form romantic relationships. When I began this research, dating applications carried a negative stigma, yet many of my students and friends mentioned meeting their …

What Is Cushioning? A Horrifying Dating Term That’s Probably Happened To You

I feel like I have to check Urban Dictionary every other day to stay up to date with the dating lingo. People are always throwing around terms like “ghosting” and I never know what they’re talking about. Am I just old and out of the loop or are things changing fast? The term “cushioning” is the newest dating slang to cross my path. While it seems that the term may be new, the actual concept is something that a ton of people have likely done already. What is cushioning?  According to Urban Dictionary, cushioning is “A dating technique where along with your main piece you also have several ‘cushions,’ other people you’ll chat and flirt with to cushion the potential blow of your main break-up and not leave you alone.” It seems so many people dating nowadays are emotionally unavailable, with one study from 2015 theorizing it has to do with their fear of intimacy. “Yeah, I don’t think it’s going that well with Dave. Luckily I’ve been cushioning him with Pablo and Gary.” The …

You use this as an excuse not to work on love and it’s easy to toss out there when you need to justify your perpetual singledom. But, are you too busy? More than likely, the answer is no.  The right man will understand and work …
