Danielle Brooks on Fans ‘Taken Back’ by Her Sofia Performance in ‘The Color Purple’ (Exclusive)

Danielle Brooks on Fans ‘Taken Back’ by Her Sofia Performance in ‘The Color Purple’ (Exclusive)

Danielle Brooks is happily sharing what the reaction has been like from moviegoers who have seen her portrayal of Sofia in the remake of the 1985 film, The Color Purple, in which Oprah Winfrey played the same character. “I know people are really taken back by my Sofia and it’s a good feeling,” she tells ET’s Kevin Frazier on the red carpet at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday. “I’m hoping it’s because they see themselves in her. At the end of the day, all of us are gonna have struggles. We are in this life and it’s just kind of a guaranteed thing, but I hope that people know that they can get themselves back up.” The Color Purple is a coming-of-age musical directed by Blitz Bazawule and also starring Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P. Henson. Brooks also portrayed Sofia on Broadway during the 2015 revival production, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. Her cinematic performance earned her an Oscar nomination in Best Supporting Actress category, and the feat marks sort of a full-circle moment, given that Winfrey also was nominated for …

Danielle Brooks Reacts to First Oscar Nomination: ‘I Want It and I’m Not Afraid to Say That’ (Exclusive)

Danielle Brooks Reacts to First Oscar Nomination: ‘I Want It and I’m Not Afraid to Say That’ (Exclusive)

Danielle Brooks has her eye on the prize, and she isn’t afraid to admit it. The Color Purple actress spoke with ET’s Denny Directo on Monday during the 2024 Oscars Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills — although not in person. Brooks was unable to attend the star-studded gala because of scheduling conflicts, as she’s currently in New Zealand filming the upcoming Minecraft movie. While she was sad she couldn’t attend, Brooks admitted that those were “champagne problems” and she couldn’t complain too much as so many good things were happening at the same time. “It is great, you know? But I do wish I could have my cake and eat it too,” Brooks said with a laugh. Brooks is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sofia in The Color Purple, and the 34-year-old actress explained, “This experience could not have been orchestrated any better for my life.” “This Color Purple has meant so much to me, it has led me to be an actor — taking this seriously when I first …

Danielle Brooks Celebrates Oscar Nomination In Amazing Clip

Danielle Brooks Celebrates Oscar Nomination In Amazing Clip

In the last few days, there’s been a lot of talk (arguably too much talk!) about the supposed “snubs” of this year’s Oscar nominations. So we’re glad to see that some of the nominees have still been able to celebrate making it onto the shortlist. Among them is Danielle Brooks, the former Orange Is The New Black star who has landed her first nomination thanks to her performance in The Color Purple. Danielle plays Sofia in the new big-screen musical, a role she previously played in the show’s Broadway revival, and landed a nod in the Best Supporting Actress category alongside Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jodie Foster, Emily Blunt and America Ferrera. Because she’s currently filming in New Zealand, Danielle had to get up extra early (no one wants a 2.30am alarm on a weekday, do they?) to learn about her Oscar nomination. Thankfully, she still made time to celebrate, as this video she posted on social media on Wednesday confirms. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the news broke, Danielle explained: “When the news …

Greta Gerwig snubbed for best director and other Oscar nominations surprises

Greta Gerwig snubbed for best director and other Oscar nominations surprises

Cue all the “did ‘Barbie’ direct itself” snark. But Greta Gerwig not being among the five best director nominees for this year’s Oscars is one of the biggest shocks in recent memory. Here are some other major “snubs” and “surprises” from Oscar nomination morning. GRETA GERWIG SHUT OUT FOR DIRECTOR If we knew anything going into Oscar nominations morning, it was that Gerwig was obviously going to be nominated for directing “Barbie.” It was that rarest of things, a critically praised original blockbuster (about a woman to boot) that became the highest earner of the year by a wide margin and was a legitimate cultural phenomenon. Gerwig was previously nominated for best director for “Lady Bird,” and missing out for “Little Woman” was even a snub. Unfortunately many will likely point to Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) for taking Gerwig’s spot, but let’s not pit two great female directors against one another. If it’s any consolation to Gerwig, last year’s blockbuster directors were also shut out of this category – neither James Cameron (“Avatar: …

Critics’ Choice Awards 2024: All The Red Carpet Photos

Critics’ Choice Awards 2024: All The Red Carpet Photos

Awards season is now in session, with last week’s Golden Globes giving way to Sunday night’s Critics Choice Awards. Stars from both the big and small screen were recognised for their efforts in the past year during the ceremony, meaning the guestlist was twice the size – and the red carpet was every bit as busting with A-listers as you would hope. Among the night’s winners were Emma Stone, Jonathan Bailey, Ali Wong and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri all of whom made stand-out appearances on the red carpet. Meanwhile, fellow nominees Bella Ramsey, Margot Robbie, Danielle Brooks and Carey Mulligan all turned looks on the night. We just have to give a shout-out to a few more of the men on the guestlist too, including nominees Charles Melton, Colman Domingo, Ryan Gosling and Pedro Pascal, the latter of whom even managed to match his outfit to his arm sling, following a recent accident. Check out all the red carpet photos you need to see in the gallery below… Critics’ Choice Awards 2024 See gallery Going …

Oscar and Emmy Hopefuls Collide, Caffeinate at Annual BAFTA Tea Party

Oscar and Emmy Hopefuls Collide, Caffeinate at Annual BAFTA Tea Party

The stars turned out for their tea on Saturday at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ buzzy annual event, which this year was packed with Oscar and Emmy hopefuls alike sipping beverages and swapping award season stories. Frontrunners Jeffrey Wright and Paul Giamatti mingled with cast members from Ted Lasso and Succession, while The Color Purple’s Danielle Brooks marked yet another run-in with her “award season friends,” Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri. “Every time we see each other, we grab hands and hug,” Brooks told Vanity Fair about her new pals, who she sees at every event. “I am trying to meditate, drink my water, but the sleep has left this station,” she added, saying that her brain has been buzzing since she started doing promotion for Purple. “You’re always on the high, thinking about all of the cool experiences that you’re having, so you’re reflecting. And then you’re thinking about the next day, going to things like the BAFTA tea party. Your brain just doesn’t shut off.” One …
