OpenAI’s chief research officer has left following CTO Mira Murati’s exit

OpenAI’s chief research officer, Bob McGrew, and a research VP, Barret Zoph, have left the company hours after OpenAI CTO Mira Murati announced she would be departing. CEO Sam Altman revealed the two latest resignations in a post on X Wednesday evening, along with leadership transition plans. “Mira, Bob, and Barret made these decisions independently of each other and amicably,” he said, “but the timing of Mira’s decision was such that it made sense to now do this all at once, so that we can work together for a smooth handover to the next generation of leadership.” VP of research Mark Chen is being promoted to OpenAI’s new SVP of research, and will lead the company’s research org in partnership with Jakub Pachocki as chief scientist, Altman said. Matt Knight, formerly head of security, will be OpenAI’s chief information security officer. And chief product officer Kevin Weil and VP of engineering Srinivas Narayanan will continue to lead OpenAI’s applied team, which is responsible for bringing the company’s tech to both enterprise and cosumer customers. He’ll also continue to provide fractional CTO consulting support for another startup. “Deazy is on the cusp of a major breakthrough and its model is the perfect fit for the enterprise market”, said Marko. “Enterprises are struggling to find the tech talent with the capacity and capability to help them achieve their goals, and using Deazy is a highly effective way of doing so. “It’s a great time to join the company, and I’m excited about what can be achieved.” Deazy works with businesses including the RAC, Popeyes and Fleetcor. Marko will be responsible for standardising how Deazy operates from a technical perspective and looking at ways that tech can make this more …

In Cringe Video, OpenAI CTO Says She Doesn’t Know Where Sora’s Training Data Came From

In Cringe Video, OpenAI CTO Says She Doesn’t Know Where Sora’s Training Data Came From

Wondering what data OpenAI used to train its buzzy new text-to-video AI? The company’s CTO is similarly unsure. Mira Murati, OpenAI’s longtime chief technology officer, sat down with The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern this week to discuss Sora, the company’s forthcoming video-generating AI. About halfway through the 10-minute-long interview, Stern straightforwardly asked Murati where the new model’s training data was gleaned from. But Murati, in the most cringe-inducing way possible, couldn’t find an answer beyond vague corporate language. “We used publicly available data and licensed data,” Murati responded to the resoundingly simple question. Stern pushed back with more specific source examples: “So, videos on YouTube?” “I’m actually not sure about that,” said Murati, before rebuffing further queries about whether videos shared to Instagram or Facebook were fed into model. “You know, if they were publicly available — publicly available to use,” the CTO answered, “but I’m not sure. I’m not confident about it.” Stern then inquired about OpenAI’s data training partnership with the stock image company Shutterstock, asking if videos on the partnered platform …

OpenAI CTO reveals possible Sora AI video generator release date

OpenAI CTO reveals possible Sora AI video generator release date

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of OpenAI, Mira Murati, provided insights into the anticipated release and development challenges of OpenAI’s text-to-video model, Sora, during an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Sora text-to-video AI generator is expected to be released by OpenAI within the current year, potentially even within the next few months, which is very exciting news. Watch the quick 10 minute interview with Murati below for more insight into what we can expect from Sora and OpenAI in the near future. OpenAI Sora release date the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, Mira Murati, hinted at the release of Sora AI in a Wall Street Journal interview. The anticipation is not just about the technology itself but also about the potential it holds for various applications. One of the main hurdles that OpenAI is tackling head-on is the cost of this sophisticated technology. The goal is to make Sora AI as affordable as possible, ideally on par with the costs associated with OpenAI’s image creator, DallE 3. While this is a challenging ambition, it …

OpenAI CTO Says It’s Releasing Sora This Year

OpenAI CTO Says It’s Releasing Sora This Year

Oh? Sora for the Delay OpenAI made a big splash when it showed off its new video generator Sora last month. The text-to-video model can be used to “create videos of up to 60 seconds featuring highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters with vibrant emotions,” according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. And with stunning results, from a camera gliding through a snowy scene to photorealistic wooly mammoths. One catch: though we’ve seen its outputs, the tool remains internal, and until now there’d been no hint of when it might be publicly released. But now, OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati told the Wall Street Journal that the company will publicly release Sora “later this year.” Red Team, Green Team OpenAI is still in the throes of “red-teaming” the text-to-video model, instructing testers to probe the tool for vulnerabilities and enhancing its guardrails. For instance, Murati told the WSJ that Sora likely won’t be able to generate videos of public figures or explicit nudity. Despite the big impact it made upon its reveal last …

Wikimedia’s CTO: In the age of AI, human contributors still matter

Wikimedia’s CTO: In the age of AI, human contributors still matter

What Deckelmann means by “sustainability” is a pressing concern in the open-source space more broadly. When complex services or entire platforms like Wikipedia depend on the time and labor of volunteers, contributors may not get the support they need to keep going—and keep those projects afloat. Building sustainable pathways for the people who make the internet has been Deckelmann’s personal passion for years. In addition to working as an engineering and product leader at places like Intel and Mozilla and contributing to open-source projects herself, she has founded, run, and advised multiple organizations and conferences that support open-source communities and open doors for contributors from underrepresented groups. “She has always put the community first, even when the community is full of jerks making life unnecessarily hard,” says Valerie Aurora, who cofounded the Ada Initiative—a former nonprofit supporting women in open-source technology that had brought Deckelmann into its board of directors and advisory board.  Addressing both a community’s needs and an organization’s priorities can be a challenging balancing act—one that is at the core of open-source …

Amazon CTO Werner Vogels on culturally aware LLMs, developer productivity and FemTech

Amazon CTO Werner Vogels on culturally aware LLMs, developer productivity and FemTech

By tradition, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels caps off the AWS re:Invent conference with his last-day keynote. A more recent tradition is that he also uses that day to publish his predictions for the coming year. This time around, I sat down with Vogels for a wide-ranging interview ahead of his keynote to delve a little bit deeper into the trends he is seeing and expects to accelerate in the coming year. This being 2023, a lot of our discussion focused on generative AI, of course. But the Netherlands-born and -based Vogels does have an interesting perspective here — and one that is still often lacking in many discussions around generative AI. His first prediction is that generative AI will become culturally aware, meaning that models will gain a better understanding of different cultural traditions. “You start to realize that most of these machines have been trained on Common Crawl, which is English, very US-centric and Western European,” he said. “And it’s not just a matter of language — although language often incorporates cultural kinds of …

Terran Orbital sues former CTO who joined call for leadership shake-up

Terran Orbital sues former CTO who joined call for leadership shake-up

Terran Orbital is suing its former CTO, Austin Williams, a little over a month after he and other shareholders publicly called for a change in company leadership. Williams was a co-founder of satellite design and manufacturing company Tyvak Nano Satellite Systems, which was acquired by Terran Orbital in 2014, and has since become core to the business. He is one of a handful of senior engineers who quit in November 2022; according to reporting from SpaceNews at the time, the trio resigned amid ongoing disagreements between the engineering and manufacturing departments on how to meet production targets. Terran Orbital’s complaint filed on November 13 alleges that Williams did not provide proper advance notice of termination per his employment agreement. The company further alleges that his conduct acted against the company’s best interest and with a lack of good faith, in breach of his fiduciary duty and in harm to the company. Williams, the complaint states, “acted with oppression, fraud, and malice.” The company further states that Williams was “aided and abetted” by some number of …
