Why shiny, high-tech solutions won’t solve one of Africa’s worst crises

Hainikoye hits Accept and a young woman greets him in Hausa, a gravelly language spoken across West Africa’s Sahel region. She has three new cows, and wants to know: Does he have advice on getting them through the lean season? Hainikoye—a twentysomething agronomist who has “followed animals,” as Sahelians refer to herding, since he first learned to walk—opens an interface on his laptop and clicks on her village in southern Niger, where humped zebu roam the dipping hills and dried-up valleys that demarcate the northern desert from the southern savanna. He tells her where the nearest full wells are and suggests feeding the animals peanuts and cowpea leaves—cheap food sources with high nutritional value that, his screen confirms, are currently plentiful. They hang up after a few minutes, and Hainikoye waits for the phone to ring again. Seven days a week at the Garbal call center, agents like Hainikoye offer what seems like a simple service, treating people to a bespoke selection of location-specific data: satellite-fed weather forecasts and reports of water levels and vegetation …

Biden’s Approval Drops To 38% On Mishandling Of Immigration, Middle East And Ukraine Crises

Biden’s Approval Drops To 38% On Mishandling Of Immigration, Middle East And Ukraine Crises

By Megan Brenan of Gallup Americans’ approval of President Joe Biden’s job performance has edged down three percentage points to 38%, just one point shy of his all-time low and well below the 50% threshold that has typically led to reelection for incumbents. In addition, Biden registers subpar approval ratings for his handling of five key issues facing the U.S., including a new low of 28% for immigration and readings ranging from 30% to 40% for the situation in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas, foreign affairs, the economy and the situation in Ukraine. Biden’s approval rating has not risen above 44% since August 2021, and his 39.8% average rating for his third year in office was the second worst among post-World War II presidents elected to their first term. Economic Approval Up Slightly; Democrats Down on Immigration Approval of Biden’s handling of the economy is up a modest four points among U.S. adults since November, while his ratings on the other issues have not significantly changed from the prior readings in November (and …

The Year Of Cascading Crises

The Year Of Cascading Crises

Authored by James Rickards via DailyReckoning.com, I often write about different crises, but usually one at a time. Whether it’s a market crash, recession, bank failures, etc. I take them on an individual basis. But what about a cascade of crises? What about a situation in which one crisis comes after another for a prolonged period? Each crisis might be manageable, but the sheer volume of crises and their cumulative effect might push society to the breaking point. It may seem hyperbolic at first glance, but it’s not — it’s entirely plausible. Now, I’m not necessarily predicting that we’ll get a cascade of crises. But it’s possible, and you should be prepared just in case. That’s because it looks like 2024 might be a year in which the crises do cascade. And the crises will not be natural disasters (although that could happen) but more like social and political disasters. Here’s what might play out over the next 10 months and the reasons why: Much of what is to come is in response to the …

Former Labour Leader Fears Party Has Lacked “Savvy” With Handling Of Crises

Former Labour Leader Fears Party Has Lacked “Savvy” With Handling Of Crises

Neil Kinnock speaking in 2016 (Alamy) 2 min read2 hr Former Labour leader Lord Neil Kinnock has said the party’s leadership has sometimes lacked political “savvy” with its handling of recent crises, including its green spending pledge and the Rochdale by-election. Kinnock was critical of the way the party communicated its decision to scrap its £28bn funding pledge for its Green Prosperity Plan, which last Thursday leader Keir Starmer confirmed the figure was no longer in play.  “The presentation of the démarche has been absurdly bad, they [Starmer’s team] know that,” he told students at City University, London, on Monday.  Kinnock said that he had “great respect and huge trust” for his Labour successors, and that Rachel Reeves’ decision last year to adjust the timings of the policy to better meet its fiscal rules was a “common sense” move. “But they didn’t spell it out, they made themselves inadvertently hostages to the £28bn, which was then an easy target for our enemies,” he continued.  “Any real change in the strategy would [have been] …

Nearly eight million people displaced by war in Sudan: UN | Humanitarian Crises News

Nine months into a bloody war, nearly eight million people have been forced from their homes in Sudan, the United Nations says, calling for urgent additional support to cope with the crisis. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees reported the alarming figure on Wednesday as High Commissioner Filippo Grandi concluded a visit to Ethiopia, to which many of the displaced people have fled. The UNHCR said it is facing a chronic shortfall in needed funds. Since April 2023, more than 100,000 people have crossed into Ethiopia from Sudan, including close to 47,000 refugees and asylum seekers. About 50,000 Sudanese refugees were already in the country. Grandi called for “urgent and additional support to meet their needs” as he inspected the efforts of the Ethiopian government and the UNHCR to assist. Five other neighbouring countries have also received huge numbers of Sudanese refugees. More than half a million people have fled to Chad since April. On average, 1,500 people cross daily into South Sudan. The latest wave of violence in the 20-year conflict has left nearly …

Donald Trump’s legacy has affected Middle East crises Biden faces

As the Biden administration grapples with a spiraling set of crises in the Middle East, the Republican presidential front-runner has seized on the moment to score political points. A drone attack launched by an Iran-affiliated militant group based in Iraq hit a U.S. base on the Jordanian-Syrian border over the weekend, killing three U.S. troops and wounding dozens of others. Some Republicans in Washington want the White House to pursue severe, escalatory measures, including targeted strikes within Iran. President Biden’s apparent desire to calibrate the response and avoid a wider conflict with Iran offered plenty of grist for Trump’s spinning mill. “This brazen attack on the United States is yet another horrific and tragic consequence of Joe Biden’s weakness and surrender,” Trump posted on social media, adding that such a strike on …

Crises have split European voters into five ‘tribes’, survey suggests | European elections

Europe’s voters are no longer divided into left or right, pro- or anti-EU camps, a survey suggests, but into five distinct tribes whose conflicting concerns are likely to dominate nearly 20 elections across the continent this year. The report argues that Europeans’ lives have been affected by five major crises in recent years – the climate emergency, the 2015 migration crisis, global economic turmoil, the war in Ukraine and Covid – and suggests voters in European parliament and national elections this year will focus on the one they feel most concerned by. The report’s authors argue that all five of these crises “were felt across Europe, although to varying intensities in different corners of the continent; experienced as an existential threat by many Europeans; dramatically affected government policies – and are by no means over”. The study’s co-author Mark Leonard said: “In 2019, the central struggle was between populists who wanted to turn their back on European integration, and mainstream parties that wanted to save the European project from Brexit and Trump.” “This time around, …

Inflation and interest rates crises cost the high street almost 120,000 jobs in 2023 | UK | News

Business campaigners have warned that only those with the “deepest pockets and brightest ideas” will survive this year after figures show that the high street shed almost 120,000 jobs in 2023. End of year figures compiled by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) suggest 119,405 jobs were lost and 10,494 shops shuttered as businesses battled inflation and other economic headwinds.  Now, there are fresh calls to save the high street before it’s too late for the remaining few after fears it is turning into a ghost town.  Rick Smith, Managing Director of Forbes Burton, said: “The current economic climate has accelerated the culling of some businesses that had struggled to adapt to a changing market. Retail companies in particular have found the public’s switch to online shopping difficult.  “After years of expansion and growth, many companies in the retail sector have found themselves saddled with large premises accruing huge rents and workforce costs. They’ve found that these sites are no longer viable after the ecommerce boom, and we’re still seeing a hangover from that in …
