Stone with Ancient Writing Discovered in England by Geography Teacher

[ad_1] A 1,600-year-old rock inscribed with early Irish writing was found by a teacher at his home in Coventry, England. The rare artifact offers insight into earlier forms of the Irish language. Geography teacher Graham Senior was gardening when he found the sandstone inscribed in ogham, an alphabet for writing in the Irish language that dates to the early Medieval period. The ogham writing system, comprised of groups of parallel lines typically found on such materials as stone, was used by the Irish before the availability of vellum manuscripts and use of Latin insular script. Related Articles Inscribed on three of its four sides, the stone is four inches long and weighs less than half a pound. It is believed that the inscription may be a person’s name, along with information about where that individual came from. When Senior found the carved stone just four to five inches beneath the ground, he washed it and sent pictures to a local archaeologist and relative Teresa Gilmore, who encouraged him to contact the Portable Antiquities Scheme. There, …

Erik ten Hag labels reaction to Manchester United’s Coventry win ’embarrassing’ and a ‘disgrace’

[ad_1] Ten Hag admitted Antony should not have acted in such fashion but revealed that his behaviour was a reaction to early provocation from Coventry players. “Did you see the reaction of Harry Maguire?” Ten Hag asked. “He [Antony] was provoked. This was a reaction to that. You haven’t seen the provocation, you only saw the reaction. But he should not do it. “But I have also seen Harry Maguire straight after and others. We should acknowledge the performance from Coventry to come into that final and come back. We are for 70 minutes totally dominating the game by far and creating many chances and 3-0 must have been the game closed. But the return from their side was very good.” United play bottom club Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night when Ten Hag could be without at least 12 senior players after his squad was further decimated by injuries sustained against Coventry. Ten Hag has doubts over Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford and hopes Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes can recover from …

Victor Torp’s torment: the greatest ever FA Cup moment that wasn’t | Coventry City

Victor Torp’s torment: the greatest ever FA Cup moment that wasn’t | Coventry City

[ad_1] Afterwards, and in perhaps their first act of restraint all afternoon, Manchester United had the judgment and basic dignity not to celebrate too vigorously. Rasmus Højlund offered a few fist pumps after his winning penalty and Antony cupped an arrogant ear towards the Coventry fans, but for the most part United’s players headed for their beaten opponents in the centre circle, clasped hands and slapped shoulders, consoled and commiserated. Respectful of the gulf between them, these two footballing worlds collided, briefly dissolving into each other, and eventually going their separate ways. How unevenly football’s joy is parcelled out. The United end was empty within seconds of the final kick, their fans already heading back to the tube station in anticipation of a fifth trip to Wembley in the space of 15 months. For Coventry’s fans, meanwhile, the memories of this game, and this day, and this comeback, will sustain them for decades. Fans who are now young will grow old still remembering those 90 seconds of unimaginable bliss at the end of extra time, those golden moments after Victor …

Manchester United star Antony slammed for what he did to Coventry City

Manchester United star Antony slammed for what he did to Coventry City

[ad_1] Manchester United winger Antony has been slammed for cupping his ear towards the Coventry City players and fans after his side progressed to the FA Cup final. United had looked out of sight at Wembley Stadium but were pegged back from 3-0 up shortly after Antony was introduced to proceedings in place of Alejandro Garnacho. Ellis Simms, Callum O’Hare and Haji Wright all scored to take the match to extra time. Simms hit the crossbar in the final 30 minutes while Victor Torp had a goal ruled out for offside on VAR review. Penalties eventually separated the two teams and while most celebrations on the pitch were subdued, Antony chose to mock Coventry instead. Heartbreak for Coventry City as they lose to Manchester United in dramatic FA Cup semi-final | UK News

[ad_1] Coventry City missed out on a place in the FA Cup final after losing to Manchester United on penalties after a dramatic match at Wembley. The Championship club were 3-0 down by the 58th minute in the semi-final but fought back and scored three goals – including a penalty in the fifth minute of injury time – to take United to extra time. Mark Robins’ side thought they’d won it with a goal in injury time of extra time but it was ruled out for offside following a VAR review, sending the match to a penalty shoot-out which United won 4-2. Having narrowly escaped an upset, celebrations from Erik ten Hag’s team were muted. Speaking in a post-match interview, United midfielder Bruno Fernandes praised Coventry. “We put ourselves in a difficult position because we had the game controlled and could have killed it but we didn’t,” he said on ITV Sport. “Credit to Coventry for what they have done but we need to do better.” United will now face rivals Manchester City in the …
