Free virtual event to focus on countering Christian Nationalism

WASHINGTON — Sojourners, a leading Christian media and advocacy organization committed to social justice and peace, is tackling the threat of Christian nationalism. This toxic ideology distorts Christian language, symbols, and identity into tools for political manipulation and gain.   On October 16 at 1 PM EST, Sojourners will host an online webinar where panelists will explain what Christian nationalism is (and isn’t), offer examples of actions to help end it, and articulate a path forward that neither stifles the participation of people of faith in public life nor threatens a vibrant, democratic, and just future for all.  The webinar will build on the insights from experts and faith leaders published in the Sep-Oct issue of Sojourners magazine, available online now at sojo.net/nationalism2024.  Rev. Adam Taylor, President of Sojourners, will be part of the conversation. An ordained Baptist minister, Taylor believes that a healthy version of patriotism is possible for committed Christians. However, “Christian nationalism is a heretical distortion of our faith and needs to be met with unwavering opposition from all those who understand that …

Michaeleen Doucleff American kids are being walloped by a hurtful combination, says social psychologist Jonathan Haidt: too much screen time and too little autonomy. In his new book, The Anxious Generation, Haidt argues that these two key factors have combined to cause the mental health crisis now facing America’s teenagers. A study by the health policy research organization KFF shows that 1 in 5 adolescents reports symptoms of anxiety and depression. Haidt’s book offers a series of recommendations for flipping both of these factors around. For example, Haidt gives this advice to parents of children ages 6 to 13: “Practice letting your kids out of your sight without them having a way to reach you. While you cook dinner for your …

The anti-Zionist Jews countering mainstream support for Israel

The anti-Zionist Jews countering mainstream support for Israel

RALEIGH, N.C. (RNS) — In the weeks following the Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, those protesting Israel’s reprisal into Gaza blocked a major highway, staged die-ins in front of federal buildings, confronted members of Congress, and shut down Grand Central Station in New York. Almost all of these demonstrations were led by Jewish organizations, particularly the self-described anti-Zionist organization, Jewish Voice for Peace. Their prominent opposition to the war from the start both challenged Americans’ ideas about Jewish attitudes toward Israel and provoked questions about Zionism. Jewish Voice for Peace says it is committed to solidarity with Palestinians’ struggle for liberation and opposes Israel’s ongoing oppression of Palestinians.  Pro-Israel Jews have denounced JVP members as antisemitic and not really Jewish. One New York politician called for its members to be excommunicated. Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said, “These radical far-left groups don’t represent the Jewish community.” For many U.S. Jews, such denunciations are only stating the obvious: Jews who consider themselves anti-Zionist have long been outside the mainstream. The term …

Countering the far-right in European elections

Countering the far-right in European elections

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on the day of his appointment, on the steps of the Hôtel Matignon, Paris, January 9, 2024. CYRIL BITTON / DIVERGENCE FOR LE MONDE Officially, the European election campaign was not the “primary reason” behind Gabriel Attal’s surprise choice for Prime Minister. After ten days of consultations, only France’s “rearmament and regeneration project” had determined the French President’s decision, asserted the Elysée. However, “it’s not forbidden, when you’re President of the Republic, to think about upcoming elections,” admitted a source in Emmanuel Macron’s entourage. Particularly when they touch to the core of president’s political identity. While the presidential coalition still has not named the head of its list for the European elections on June 9, the Rassemblement National (RN, far-right) is leading the polls, some ten points ahead of the Renaissance-MoDem-Horizons Macron-aligned list. This has given rise to fears of a major electoral setback for the French president on the European stage, his favorite arena. A defeat from which he would have difficulty recovering on the domestic scene, with three years …
