Rethinking EU restrictive measures     – POLITICO

Rethinking EU restrictive measures     – POLITICO

[ad_1] Are there unintended consequences to European Union sanctions against Russia? While rocked initially by the restrictions, Russia’s economy has shown remarkable resilience. Europe, on the other hand, is facing a year of glacial growth. There are also growing concerns around the legitimacy of some of the embargoes being issued by Brussels, the adverse impact on European businesses and the wider humanitarian ramifications, both at general and individual levels. As the fighting enters a third year, it is clear that a rethink may be required. A strong, united stance from the European Union is necessary — but so too is a clear, consistent and compliance-friendly sanctions regime that looks to minimize collateral damage wherever possible. The diminishing impact of sanctions With Europe’s 13th package of economic measures being introduced, Russia remains the world’s most sanctioned country by a considerable margin. Almost 2,000 Russian individuals and organizations have been hit with restrictions, and bans have been placed on a wide range of import and export goods, from luxury watches to crude oil. Embargoes on the latter …

Sack Andrew Bailey as Bank of England boss, says Liz Truss – POLITICO

Sack Andrew Bailey as Bank of England boss, says Liz Truss – POLITICO

[ad_1] Excerpts were released over the weekend and include a scathing view of Britain’s financial establishment. She describes the Treasury, the Bank of England and the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) as a “three-headed hydra” that “wanted to stick as closely to EU law as possible.” But the now-backbench MP went further in the interview, saying Bailey should no longer lead the U.K.’s central bank. She also said she would “like to see the back of the OBR” and called for an investigation into the response to her infamous “mini-budget” in Sept 2022, which resulted in the BoE having to step in to calm markets. Asked whether she thinks Bailey should still be in his role, Truss said: “No, I don’t. I certainly think there should be a proper investigation into what happened in September 2022. And the actions the Bank of England took.” Truss was forced to resign soon after the budget, in which she announced tax cuts for Britain’s wealthiest and opted not to publish the usual economic forecasts from the OBR. Markets …

The 1 Vegetable You Should NEVER Store Next To Potatoes

The 1 Vegetable You Should NEVER Store Next To Potatoes

[ad_1] We’ve written before about how boiling your spuds in water might not be your most delicious option. And now, it turns out some of us are making a common storage mistake ― you really shouldn’t store potatoes next to onions, it seems. On Martha Stewart’s site, vice president of culinary recipe box company Blue Apron says that onions should be kept far away from potatoes (and apples). “Storing onions and potatoes together will hasten the ripening process on the potatoes, leading them to grow eyes and sometimes roots,“he revealed in an article about the topic. Despite previous advice to never store potatoes in the fridge, the Food Standards Agency has since found that the crisper drawer is actually a pretty great place to keep your spuds. In fact, data from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) suggest that spuds kept in the fridge can last up to three times longer than those stored in the cupboard. Meanwhile, onions become soggy in the fridge ― they shouldn’t ever be stored there, experts advise (oops). …

Turkey’s Erdoğan suffers blow in crucial mayoral elections as secular opposition surges – POLITICO

Turkey’s Erdoğan suffers blow in crucial mayoral elections as secular opposition surges – POLITICO

[ad_1] In his victory speech delivered late Sunday, Imamoğlu said the local election results would have big implications for the country’s political future. “Turkey will blossom into a new era in democracy as of tomorrow. March 31, 2024 is the day when democratic erosion ends and democracy begins to recover,” he told a big crowd in Istanbul.  Imamoğlu is seen as a future challenger to Erdoğan, and winning the city which catapulted the current president to national prominence when he won the mayorship 30 years ago is a symbolic achievement. Erdoğan conceded defeat and promised to listen to the message delivered by Turkish voters. “March 31 is not an end for us, but a turning point,” he said. Turkey’s long-serving leader — in office as president or prime minister since 2003 — had vowed to recapture the city where he had made his political career, and sent no fewer than 17 government ministers to campaign in Istanbul ahead of voting. The CHP also won in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, as well as Izmir, Bursa and Adana, …

‘Shrinkflation’ crunch for Maltesers, Lindt and Cadbury Easter eggs | UK | News

[ad_1] Easter egg lovers may find a bitter taste in their mouths when tucking into chocolate next weekend as inflationary pressures mount.   Malteser, Lindt and Cadbury eggs are the latest victims of ‘shrinkflation’ – the practice of reducing the size of a product while continuing to offer it at the same price or more, according to Which?. The seasonal treats cost at least 50 per cent more than they did a year ago, while some have also decreased in size, the consumer group found. Overall, the price of chocolate has risen by 12.6 per cent in a year, Which?’s supermarket food and drink inflation tracker has revealed – far more than the overall price of supermarket food and drink, which is up 5.6 per cent. It comes after a huge rise in global cocoa prices due to dry weather in West Africa, with prices roughly doubling in a year. A Maltesers Truffles Luxury Easter Egg 286g was the worst example of Easter egg inflation, going from an average of £8 to an average of £13 …

The 1 Spice You Should Always Smell Before Using

The 1 Spice You Should Always Smell Before Using

[ad_1] There are three things I find impressive now I’m in my late 20s that I never thought I’d be wowed by; 1) having a good sleep routine, 2) owning a tumble dryer, and 3) possessing an extensive and varied spice collection. Those who agree with me will know that saffron, the notoriously pricey spice, is usually the crowning jewel of most spice lovers’ collections. But you might not have known that the spenny strands are often faked ― and you can tell the difference between the legit and fake kinds with just a sniff. What? I know! It all has to do with how expensive the spice is ― the substance is more expensive by weight than gold. Arash Ghalehgolabbehbahani, a research associate at the University of Vermont, explained to Business Insider that “to harvest the saffron, you need a lot of labourers to pick up the flowers, separate — saffron is dehydrated or dry stigma.” The flowers only bloom for six weeks in the year; their stigmas can only be picked at certain …

Mary Berry’s Secret 9p Ingredient For The Best Mash

Mary Berry’s Secret 9p Ingredient For The Best Mash

[ad_1] If there’s one thing the iconic Mary Berry loves, it’s sneaking a secret ingredient into a classic dish to make the meal about twice as delicious as normal. First, there was the semolina for her roast potatoes. Then, she added chicken and crème fraîche to her easy weeknight-friendly lasagne (don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it). And now, she’s here to transform mash from a banal base to a delicious standout ― and you’ve probably already got it in your cupboard. What is it, then? Mary Berry adds wholegrain mustard to her mash for a spicy, warming kick. A 200g jar goes for 65p at Aldi ― meaning the two tablespoons, or around 28g, of mustard she uses in her recipe would set you back about 9p. Having tried it myself, I swear by the tangy, gently spicy addition ― and it doesn’t hurt that it adds a welcome texture to the smooth spuds. No wonder the recipe has earned five stars. Speaking of, Mary has some advice for those picking potatoes; “Use floury …

MPs call on Jeremy Hunt to extend free school meals to all primary pupils ahead of budget | UK | News

[ad_1] In Scotland, the Government has committed to providing free school meals for all primary school kids (Image: Getty) The Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has been urged to use his Spring Budget to extend free school meals for all primary school pupils.   In Scotland, the Government has committed to providing free school meals for all primary school children, while in Wales the rollout of universal primary free school meals began in September 2022. But in England, only in London do all primary pupils get access to free hot meals, a scheme now in its second year after it was extended by London Mayor Sadiq Khan in January. Graham Whitham, chief executive at Greater Manchester Poverty Action, said: “Families across the country are being hit hard by soaring living costs, and at a time when every penny counts, we’ve got to get past this awful situation where you have to meet a very low-income threshold for your child(ren) to be eligible for free school meals. “The threshold is set incredibly low and hasn’t been uprated since 2018, …

The 1 Item Of Food Waste UK Gardeners Should Always Add To Their Compost

The 1 Item Of Food Waste UK Gardeners Should Always Add To Their Compost

[ad_1] With the mild winter and nearing spring causing early hayfever symptoms for some, we can at least console ourselves with a comforting fact; the UK’s gardens are waking up. If you’re a keen gardener, the bleak winter months may have offered you a welcome respite from backyard work. But easing into seasonal chores doesn’t mean you have to toil away ― in fact, one of the most effective additions to your soil is probably lying in your bin bag as we speak. In a recent Facebook post shared with the (inaccurately-named, IMO) Dull Men’s Club, a site user said, “One of my dullest winter activities is to store the winter’s consumption of eggshells then pulverise them into powder and use them the following spring/summer to sprinkle on the soil of tomato plants suffering from ‘blossom end rot’ (a very common and very annoying occurrence in the UK which can ruin a crop).” Does that work? The theory Beverly Finnegan, the poster behind the suggestion, shares is that ”[blossom end rot] is caused by lack …

UOB’s Q4 profit beats forecasts; junior staff to get one-off bonus to cope with rising living costs

UOB’s Q4 profit beats forecasts; junior staff to get one-off bonus to cope with rising living costs

[ad_1] SINGAPORE: UOB on Thursday (Feb 22) cut its 2024 loan growth projections to low single-digits from mid-single digits after posting a stronger-than-forecast 22 per cent jump in fourth-quarter net profit. UOB maintained its 2024 guidance for double-digit fee growth while projecting total income to see positive growth, CEO Wee Ee Cheong said in a briefing on the bank’s earnings. Wee said UOB focuses “on high quality customers” for loan growth while it expected double-digit fee growth would be led by its retail franchise in cards and wealth. Credit costs for 2024 are expected to be at the lower end of its previous 25 to 30 basis points guidance range, he added. “2023 was a challenging year. We saw slowing demand globally, more geopolitical tensions, sticky inflation and higher interest rates,” Wee said. “We expect some of these to persist this year but the impact should be manageable.” Wee said Southeast Asia remained a bright spot due to robust domestic demand, recovery in tourism and investment flows into the manufacturing sector as multi-national companies diversified …
