GoWise Steam Air Fryer Review: An OK Combo Cooker

GoWise Steam Air Fryer Review: An OK Combo Cooker

More complicated was ginger soy fish which steamed, half submerged in a mix of lime, soy sauce, and sesame oil. The recipe instructs you to put a shallow bowl small enough to cook the fish inside the cooking basket. It also needs to be large enough to hold the fish, and your fingers will thank you for figuring out how to extract the hot dish before you hit the Start button. That said, it made for a surprisingly quick and lovely meal. Mess of Both Worlds Next came combo cooking, where I was hoping to get a bit of the best of both worlds: Steaming for tender interiors, then a hot blast to crisp the exterior. I learned quickly that using combo mode meant it would only steam, then cook. Programming it felt like trying to figure out a Konami code. The touchscreen controls look sleek but are a complicated jumble best overcome with brute memorization. Adding time at the end of cooking (steam or combo) means you have to reset the temperature, which defaults …

Slow cooker Mexican-inspired prawns with rice recipe

Slow cooker Mexican-inspired prawns with rice recipe

Your slow cooker makes really good steamed rice, as it works in much the same way as a rice cooker. Just make sure you give the rice a thorough rinse beforehand. Once the rice is cooked, you can top it with light ingredients; nothing too heavy or the rice will turn into a stodgy mess. Try this zesty, tomato-based sauce with prawns (or fillets of white fish, if you prefer).  I tend to avoid adding frozen seafood directly to the slow cooker, as it releases too much water. If you are using frozen prawns, make sure they are completely thawed before you start, then pat them dry with kitchen paper. Serves 4 Timings Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 2 hours 30 minutes Ingredients 1 x 400g tin whole tomatoes 2 tbsp chipotle sauce 1 onion, roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped large handful of coriander, roughly chopped, plus a handful of coriander leaves to serve 2 tbsp lime juice, plus lime wedges to serve 300g long-grain rice 12 large raw prawns, peeled and …

Slow cooker bolognese with big pasta recipe

Slow cooker bolognese with big pasta recipe

I really like cooking pasta in my slow cooker, not least because it means less equipment and less washing up. The only trick – and this is a good thing for the carb-conscious – is not to add too much pasta. A cup or so will do nicely. Serves 4 Timings Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: about 2 hours Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 small carrot, finely chopped 1 celery stalk, finely chopped 500g beef mince 1 tsp dried oregano 1 bay leaf 1 x 400g tin crushed tomatoes 250g cherry tomatoes 750ml tomato passata 80g rigatoni or other large pasta finely grated Parmesan, to serve Method Heat your slow cooker to high. Slow Cooker Porridge Changed My Life (Well, My Mornings)

Slow Cooker Porridge Changed My Life (Well, My Mornings)

I love porridge. I’ve even gone so far as to buy myself a spurtle ― a thin, long stirring tool used in traditional Scottish cooking. But even I have to admit that despite my love for the breakfast, it isn’t half a pain to cook in the morning. There’s the impossible-to-clean pan. There’s the sheer time it takes to achieve the perfect creamy consistency. And then there’s the fact that if you’re anything like me, you’re too busy doing a million other tasks in the morning to prep yourself a nourishing bowl of oats ― however badly you want to. But recently, I found a way of cooking porridge that’s transformed my morning routine completely ― there’s little washing-up, there’s no effort, and crucially it’s cooked and ready the second I get up. How? The secret is to use a slow cooker (which I honestly think should have as much, or ― gasp ― more hype around it as air fryers do). Believe me when I tell you I was sceptical of the method. I …

when police shot a teenager dead, a rumbling pressure cooker exploded

when police shot a teenager dead, a rumbling pressure cooker exploded

Riots have broken out in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, following the lethal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy named as Nahel M. An investigation into his death is ongoing but the situation has already triggered protest and anger. Whatever the investigation concludes, the incident forms part of a complex, deep-rooted problem. It raises the memory of the violence that spread across the city’s suburbs in 2005, lasting more than three weeks and forcing the country into a state of emergency. Many of the issues behind the unrest back then remain unresolved to this day and have potentially been aggravated by ever worsening relations between the police and the public. During my extensive fieldwork in the suburban estates of Paris, Lyon and Marseille I have seen and heard first-hand the grievances that are now being cried out on the streets of Nanterre. The suburbs and poverty Certain suburbs of large French cities have, for decades, suffered from what has been labelled the worst “hypermarginalisation” in Europe. Poor-quality housing and schooling combine with geographical isolation and …
