Good sex and relationships education can help teens understand when behaviour is abusive or controlling

Nearly half of young people aged between 13 and 17 who have been in a relationship in the past year have experienced violent or controlling behaviour, according to a recent survey from charity the Youth Endowment Fund. The finding comes from a survey of 10,000 young people in England and Wales, of which 27% had been in a relationship in the past year. This evidence of abuse in teen relationships comes against a background of sexual harassment and abuse perpetrated by young people against their peers. Over half of the 106,984 child sexual abuse cases in 2022 – the most recent data – in England and Wales involved reported offences by young people aged between ten and 17. This is a rise of 7.6% from 2021. A 2021 survey by schools regulator Ofsted found that sexual harassment is a common aspect of school life for a majority of pupils. The Everyone’s Invited website, an online space for survivors of sexual abuse to anonymously share their stories, has received over 50,000 testimonials of sexual harassment and …

Hundreds of Diabetics Injured When App Controlling Insulin Pump Malfunctions

Image by Getty / Futurism A glitch in an iOS app that controls the insulin pumps for people with diabetes has injured over 200 people, the US Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday, in an eerie example of smart tech going awry. In a press release, the FDA said that it’s issued a recall for version 2.7 of the app, t:connect, which pairs with the t:slim X2 insulin pump manufactured by Tandem Diabetes Care. The faulty software was causing the app to continuously crash and relaunch on Apple smartphones in a never ending loop, sending excessive Bluetooth signals to the pump that drained its battery at a rapid rate. The order only involves the software update and doesn’t mean that the devices will have to be returned. But the graveness of the issue should not be understated; the FDA has designated the order as a Class 1 recall — its most serious type — because using the pumps could cause serious injury or death. Nearly 86,000 devices are affected. “Pump shutdown will cause insulin …

Angel City seeking new owner for controlling stake of franchise

Angel City seeking new owner for controlling stake of franchise

Angel City, the most valuable franchise in the history of U.S. women’s sports, might soon have a new controlling owner after its board hired a New York investment bank to manage a sale of the NWSL club. The team’s four primary owners voted to have Moelis & Co. seek an investor that would assume control of Angel City’s board, which has reportedly been at odds for months over spending. But Sarah Harden, a media entrepreneur and one of Angel City’s earliest investors, characterized the search for a new controlling owner as fundraising. “Angel City is exactly where it needs to be as a club,” she said. “What’s been built at Angel City in three short years is nothing short of incredible. And in high-growth companies it is absolutely normal to step back and look at ‘what do we need to continue this growth?’ “This board has determined that this is the right time to bring in a new major investor. That’s it. That is the story.” Yet maybe not the whole story. Angel City, which …

Mum’s fight for new law after daughter kills herself over controlling ex-boyfriend | UK | News

A mum whose daughter committed suicide after relentless persecution, including violent assaults, at the hands of a brutal ex-boyfriend, is calling for a change in the law to offer better protection to potential future victims. Chloe Holland, 23, died last March after taking her own life, having suffered brutal abuse at the hands of Marc Masterton, 26, Masterton tracked Chloe’s phone, hit her with a dumbbell, and even gave her a knife, telling her to kill herself. Eventually Chloe did so, and he was eventually sentenced to 41 months in prison after pleading guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour in August. Her mum Sharon, from Portsmouth in Hampshire, is pushing for a new offence of “manslaughter by coercive control” – something she refers to as Chloe’s law. So far the Ministry of Justice has rejected her demands, arguing existing legislation is sufficient – but campaigners argue there have been no unlawful act manslaughter convictions linked to coercive control. Sharon said Chloe met Masterton at school, but they only became a couple in January 2022, after …

Christian Horner makes his case against ‘controlling behaviour’ claims | Christian Horner

Christian Horner’s future remains in the balance after an extensive crunch meeting with the barrister conducting the investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour made against the Red Bull team principal. Less than a week before the launch of the new 2024 Red Bull car and with the new season set to begin in Bahrain on 2 March, Horner attended a meeting with the barrister at an undisclosed central London location on Friday. It is understood it lasted for eight hours across the morning and afternoon and, as had been expected, no decision was immediately announced. “It would not be appropriate to comment before the investigation is completed,” said Red Bull in a statement after the meeting. No statement has been issued by Horner, or the parent company that instigated the investigation, Red Bull GmbH. Horner was making the case that will potentially decide the fate of his career as he defended himself against the allegations from a female employee that he had used what is described as “controlling” behaviour. He has already denied the accusations …

People addicted to sex tend to have more difficulty controlling their emotions when upset, study finds

A recent study indicated that individuals with more pronounced compulsive sexual behaviors tend to have more difficulty controlling their emotions when upset and more difficulty with clarity of their emotions. These individuals also tend to accept their emotions less and exhibit more pronounced anxiety and avoidance attachment traits. The paper was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. Compulsive sexual behavior, often referred to as sexual addiction, is characterized by persistent and repetitive sexual thoughts or actions that are difficult to control, causing significant distress or impairment in personal, social, or occupational functioning. This behavior typically involves a preoccupation with sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors that may lead to negative consequences, such as relationship problems, financial issues, or neglect of other responsibilities. Unlike healthy sexual expression, compulsive sexual behavior is often driven by a need to escape from emotional discomfort or stress, rather than a desire for sexual intimacy or pleasure. Compulsive sexual behavior is considered a disorder when these behaviors become all-consuming and substantially interfere with daily life. The World Health Organization now recognizes …

Ukraine says controlling skies ‘priority’ in war against Russia | Russia-Ukraine war News

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says whoever controls the skies will define ‘when and how the war will end’. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said his country’s priority for 2024 is to gain control over its skies as Russia’s invasion nears its third year. Whoever controls the skies will define “when and how the war will end”, Kuleba said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Ukraine has long called on the West to deliver advanced fighter jets to support its troops entrenched in the south and the east of the country. “We are fighting a powerful enemy, a very big enemy that doesn’t sleep. It takes time,” Kuleba said. “We defeated them on the land in 2022. We defeated them in the sea in 2023 and we are completely focused on defeating them in the air in 2024.” Kuleba, second from left, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, January 17, 2024 [Fabrice Coffrini/AFP] Various NATO countries are currently training Ukrainian pilots on US-made F-16 fighter jets.
