Inadequate bird flu testing is making pandemic experts concerned we’re “flying blind” with H5N1

Inadequate bird flu testing is making pandemic experts concerned we’re “flying blind” with H5N1

[ad_1] After public health officials confirmed H5N1, the virus also known as bird flu, jumped from poultry to cows and recently infected an American, they’ve warned that if the virus strain made its way to pigs, it could be a time to press the panic button. That’s because swine are closer to humans in genetic terms, acting as a prime reservoir for viruses to mutate into something that could turn into a far-reaching pandemic in people. But now, a new study suggests that dairy cows might have the same potential as pigs, which could improve the bird flu’s capability of being more human-to-human transmission.  As reported by Nature, preliminary data shows that the flu virus can jump back and forth between cows and birds thanks to a specific receptor. This specific trait might allow the virus to spread more widely and develop more mutations along the way. If a single cow can be a host to multiple types of influenza over time, it could evolve to more readily infect humans.  “The biggest question is whether …

Poll finds fewer Americans are concerned about climate change

Poll finds fewer Americans are concerned about climate change

[ad_1] Even though humans are experiencing the hottest months in recorded human history, and scientists warn our species is living on “borrowed time,” a recent poll found a notable dip in the number of people who view climate change as an urgent issue.  In the latest poll by Monmouth University, less than half (46%) of the American public perceives global heating as being a very serious problem. While this is still higher than the figure from nine years ago (41% in 2015), it is also lower than more recent polling, which had the figure at over half (54% in 2018 and 56% in 2021). Concern about the urgency of addressing climate change — characterizing it as “very serious” — has dropped among all political groups: Democrats (85% to 77% since 2021), Republicans (21% to 13% since 2021) and independents (56% to 43% since 2021). Voters today by far are more worried about issues like inflation, immigration and reproductive rights. Americans still overwhelmingly acknowledge that climate change is happening and is caused by our burning of …

“Don’t worry about that”: Stormy Daniels says Trump told her to not be concerned about Melania

[ad_1] In her testimony on Tuesday, Stormy Daniels told the court that former President Donald Trump told her not to worry about his wife, Melania Trump, during their alleged sexual encounter in 2006. Daniels, an adult film star, described a “very brief” conversation between her and Trump about Melania, saying it took place in his hotel room after they met at a celebrity golf tournament. According to Daniels, she asked Trump about this wife and he told her it wouldn’t be an issue. “Oh don’t worry about that, we don’t sleep in the same room,” Trump said, according to Daniels, as ABC News reported.  Daniels went on to describe painful details about their alleged sexual encounter. She divulged that when she returned from a trip to the bathroom, she found the former president sitting on the bed in his boxers and a t-shirt. The bed he was sitting on blocked her exit from the bathroom and it was then that Daniels, who had planned on leaving, realized the situation she was in, she said. “What …

Rishi Sunak ‘deeply concerned’ about potential Israeli offensive in Rafah after Palestinians told to evacuate | Politics News

[ad_1] Rishi Sunak is “deeply concerned” about a potential Israeli offensive in the city of Rafah in the south of Gaza. It comes after Israel’s military told Palestinians to leave parts of the city, with the announcement appearing to signal a long-threatened Israeli ground invasion is imminent. Hamas accepts ceasefire deal proposed by mediators – follow live Speaking on Monday, Mr Sunak said: “I’ve been very consistent that we are deeply concerned about the prospect of a military incursion into Rafah, given the number of civilians that are sheltering there and the importance of that crossing for aid. “I’ve made those points repeatedly to Prime Minister Netanyahu. “The priority right now should be on all parties, but particularly Hamas, to agree to a deal to release hostages and allow more aid to go in as part of a temporary pause, which will allow us to build a sustainable ceasefire. “That’s the best way to end the suffering. And that’s what I continue to call on all parties to do.” Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has …

Why are so many government officials concerned about TikTok?

Why are so many government officials concerned about TikTok?

[ad_1] DAVE DAVIES, HOST: This is FRESH AIR. I’m Dave Davies. A lot of people love TikTok, the video sharing app, and some people love to hate it, particularly in the United States Congress. TikTok’s parent company is based in China, and there are fears that it could harvest data about its U.S. users and provide it to the Chinese government or that TikTok’s videos and algorithm could be programmed by the Chinese Communist Party to influence Americans’ political and cultural views. Last month, in an extraordinary move, Congress passed and President Biden signed a bill requiring a forced sale of TikTok to a non-Chinese buyer. If the company isn’t sold over a specified time period, the law permits the U.S. government to ban the app in the United States. TikTok vows to fight the move, along with free speech advocates who say it would violate the First Amendment. For some insight into what may happen and what it means, we turn to Drew Harwell, a technology reporter for the Washington Post who’s been following …

Infected blood scandal: Campaigners concerned government may seek to delay paying compensation | UK News

[ad_1] It has taken decades, the loss of thousands of lives and an exhausting battle to have their harrowing, heartbreaking stories heard. Now the end is almost in sight. In just over three weeks, Sir Brian Langstaff will deliver his long-awaited report into the infected blood scandal. But for those who have suffered so much, there is still so much to fear. Jason Evans lost his father to AIDS when he was just four years old after Jonathan Evans’s NHS treatment for haemophilia included blood products contaminated with HIV. Image: Jason Evans lost his father to AIDS when he was just four years old Mr Evans said: “My first memory is being at his parents’ house on my fourth birthday, and he was dying of AIDS in a bed. “In the 70s, he began to be given the new Factor VIII (8) product, which infected him with hepatitis C and then into the 80s he was also infected with HIV.” Mr Evans has devoted his life to uncovering the truth behind the scandal by searching …

Bird flu outbreaks are popping up across the U.S. Should you be concerned?

Bird flu outbreaks are popping up across the U.S. Should you be concerned?

[ad_1] Four years after the COVID pandemic first began, public attention has turned to another virus: highly pathogenic avian influenza A (also known as H5N1), which has been the center of a rash of outbreaks across dairy farms in the U.S. Even more worryingly, a few humans have also gotten sick. But wait, isn’t this a pathogen that only infects birds? Technically, it originated in birds, but as we’ve seen many times in the history of public health, some of the most problematic viruses jump from animals to us. The long list of so-called zoonotic transmissions includes Ebola, SARS-1, MERS, Lyme disease and most likely, SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Indeed, bird flu, as H5N1 is also known, has been around for a long time, and has infected plenty of humans before, often with deadly results. But thankfully, the virus hasn’t caused widespread infections in humans yet. However, a global bird flu pandemic in birds and other animals has been causing chaos for over three years now, killing hundreds of elephant seals in Antarctica, …

Cyprus concerned over spike in arrivals of Syrian refugees from Lebanon | News

[ad_1] Arrivals of Syrian asylum seekers have surged, with more than 350 such arrivals recorded in two days. Cyprus has expressed concerns about a rise in the irregular migration of Syrian refugees coming from Lebanon. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday said it was “deeply concerning” that the irregular arrival of Syrian asylum seekers and refugees was consistently rising in recent weeks, with more than 350 such arrivals recorded in two days. “I fully understand the challenges Lebanon is facing, but exporting migrants to Cyprus should not be the answer and cannot be accepted,” he said after a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. Cyprus, the EU’s easternmost state, lies just 100 miles (160km) from Syria and Lebanon, and arrivals of asylum seekers from the former in particular have surged in recent months. Lebanon, which is in economic crisis, hosts some 800,000 United Nations-registered Syrian refugees, but officials estimate the actual number is far higher, ranging between 1.5 and two million. About 90 percent of Syrian refugees in Lebanon live below the extreme poverty line, …

Prince Harry concerned ‘security risk’ after date of UK return leaked | Royal | News

[ad_1] The inadvertent publication of the date and time of Prince Harry’s appearance at the Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8 has raised security concerns, potentially jeopardizing his attendance. Sources tell the Daily Express that Prince Harry’s team emphasized the need to keep the exact date of his appearance confidential due to fears over his security in the United Kingdom. The revelation of the service details on the St. Paul’s Cathedral official website has heightened fears, particularly in light of disclosures made in the Duke of Sussex’s memoir Spare, where he discussed his military service, including that he had killed 25 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. “Harry recognizes the potential risks to his security, especially considering the sensitive information he shared in his memoir,” the source said. “That’s why his team were so adamant about keeping his whereabouts on a need-to-know basis. Whenever he’s appeared at events in the UK in the last few years, there have been last-minute announcements due to this very reason. “The fact that St. Paul’s …
