Elon Musk, Who Is Definitely Not Secretly Trump’s Boss, Will Have Office on White House Compound

Elon Musk, Who Is Definitely Not Secretly Trump’s Boss, Will Have Office on White House Compound

They’re ready to move in together. Office Space Multi-hyphenate billionaire Elon Musk has grown so close to president-elect Donald Trump that he’ll be moving with him — well, sort of — following next week’s inauguration. Musk, who was put in charge of a so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) last year by Trump, is expected to be assigned space in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is part of the White House complex and a five-minute walk from the West Wing, the New York Times reports. That’s despite the fact that DOGE is an entirely advisory body and not an actual government “department.” The news again highlights the incredibly cozy relationship between Musk and Trump — and, more generally, between corporate America and the White House in what critics including the outgoing president Joe Biden are calling the rise of American oligarchy. On a separate level, the arrangement again raises a question pertinent both to Trump’s foes and allies: after Musk spent an unprecedented hundreds of millions to get the real estate tycoon into office, who’s really calling …

Middle school students discover cancer-fighting compound in goose droppings

Middle school students discover cancer-fighting compound in goose droppings

A Chicago-based science initiative recently turned middle school students into bona fide biomedical scientists, blending hands-on learning with groundbreaking research. These students uncovered a novel compound with the potential to slow melanoma and ovarian cancer growth, demonstrating the transformative power of STEM education when paired with real-world research. The discovery emerged from a 14-week program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), designed to address educational inequities in STEM fields. Led by researcher Brian Murphy and his team, the program partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago to immerse students in antibiotic discovery research. Through this collaboration, young learners collected and analyzed environmental samples from their neighborhoods, exploring science as active contributors rather than passive learners. Participants conducted fieldwork, applied science experiments, and environmental studies, guided by graduate and postdoctoral mentors. Using UIC’s cutting-edge robotic tools, the students safely grew bacterial cultures and tested for bioactive compounds. One …

UN agency closes East Jerusalem compound after fire it says was arson

JERUSALEM —  The main United Nations aid agency for Palestinians closed its headquarters in East Jerusalem after local Israeli residents set fire to areas at the edge of the sprawling compound, the agency said. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNWRA, said in a post on the social media platform X that he had decided to close the compound until proper security was restored. He said Thursday’s incident was the second in less than a week. “This is an outrageous development. Once again, the lives of U.N. staff were at a serious risk,” he said. “It is the responsibility of the State of Israel as an occupying power to ensure that United Nations personnel and facilities are protected at all times,” he said. UNRWA, set up to deal with the Palestinian refugees who fled or were forced from their homes during the 1948 war around the time of Israel’s creation, has long been a target of Israeli hostility. Israeli police said they had opened an investigation into a brush fire adjacent to the UNRWA compound. “Preliminary …

The Guardian view on hope and despair in Gaza: attacking Rafah will compound this disaster | Editorial

Men, women and children danced in the streets of Rafah on Monday after Hamas said it had approved a ceasefire deal. There was little to celebrate. Hours later, Israel ordered 100,000 in the city to flee and protesters took to the streets in Israel warning that the government was endangering the lives of surviving hostages taken on 7 October. Shortly afterwards, Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side of the crossing with Egypt – the key entry point for aid – and shut off supplies. Hopes of a deal have been raised and dashed repeatedly. There are differing accounts of what precisely Hamas agreed to, including the timing of hostage releases and – most painfully – whether their figure includes the dead as well as the living. Continued fighting does not negate negotiations to end a conflict. But the end of the war is likely to mean the end of Benjamin Netanyahu’s prime ministership and polling suggests that while most Israelis prioritise a deal to release hostages over military action in Rafah, that is …

Coffee Compound May Help Counteract Age-Related Muscle Loss

Coffee Compound May Help Counteract Age-Related Muscle Loss

Authored by George Citroner via The Epoch Times, One of the world’s favorite brews may hold the key to keeping muscles strong and healthy as we age. According to recent research, a natural compound found in coffee could be the secret weapon against age-related muscle loss. The Muscle-Preserving Molecule Mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, play a crucial role in muscle health. An issue linked to sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, is that these cellular components generate less energy as we get older. Compounding this problem, levels of the crucial substance NAD+ (which stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme that helps cells regenerate and protects them from damage, also decline with age. Researchers already know that NAD+ levels can be boosted using various dietary precursors, including the essential amino acid L-tryptophan and different forms of vitamin B3, such as nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and nicotinamide mononucleotide. In a recent study published in Nature Metabolism, scientists investigated whether an alkaline compound called trigonelline could help reverse these age-related changes in muscle …

Compound Found In Broccoli Could Help Dissolve Blood Clots And Prevent Stroke

Authored by Allison DeMajistre via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), Researchers from the Heart Research Institute (HRI) in Australia have found that a common vegetable eaten by millions every day may be able to prevent and treat a leading cause of death worldwide. (Teo Tarras/Shutterstock) The study, published in the journal ACS Central Science, shows results from a three-year investigation into how a natural chemical found in broccoli can help dissolve blood clots and improve the action of a common clot-busting drug used to treat an acute ischemic stroke. Current Stroke Treatment Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States suffers a stroke. In 2021, strokes accounted for one in every six deaths from cardiovascular disease. There are two types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is obstructed by a clot, while a hemorrhagic stroke results when a weakened vessel in the brain ruptures and causes bleeding inside the brain. According to the American Heart Association, ischemic stroke accounts for 87 percent of all strokes. …

Zimbabwe police rescue 251 children used as labor and find graves in religious sect compound raid

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe police on Wednesday said they have arrested a man claiming to be a prophet of an apostolic sect at a shrine where believers stay in a compound and authorities found 16 unregistered graves, including those of infants, and more than 250 children used as cheap labor. In a statement, police spokesman Paul Nyathi said Ishmael Chokurongerwa, 56, a “self-styled” prophet, led a sect with more than 1,000 members at a farm about 34 kilometers (21 miles) north-west of the capital, Harare, where the children were staying alongside other believers. The children “were being used to perform various physical activities for the benefit of the sect’s leadership,” he said. Of the 251 children, 246 had no birth certificates. “Police established that all children of school-going age did not attend formal education and were subjected to abuse as cheap labor, doing manual work in the name of being taught life skills,” said Nyathi. Police said among the graves they found were those of seven infants whose burials were not registered with authorities. …

RuPaul Building Fortified Compound to Withstand “Cycle of Destruction”

RuPaul Building Fortified Compound to Withstand “Cycle of Destruction”

“I am plotting a safety net.” Bunker Buster Acclaimed drag performer RuPaul Andre Charles — of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fame, and known universally by his first name — has a new memoir out this week, titled “The House of Hidden Meanings,” and to promote it he gave an extensive and fascinating interview to The New Yorker. The resulting profile is a can’t-miss meditation on fame, gender, entertainment and more. But probably the single wildest part comes toward the beginning, when RuPaul alludes to what the magazine describes as a “fortified compound” he’s building with his husband in Wyoming. “Humans on this planet are in the cycle of destruction,” RuPaulsaid, enigmatically. “I am plotting a safety net.” “I wouldn’t call it a bunker,” he continued, and then referenced documentaries about castles he’s been watching before bed: “It’s a lot of concrete and a lot of things. I keep thinking about these castles that I’m going to bed to.” Compound Eyes The wealthy — RuPaul’s net worth is estimated to run well into the tens of millions — …
