Comedian Fern Brady’s poster banned for alleged ‘blasphemy’ by ASA

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a poster depicting the comedian Fern Brady as the Virgin Mary squirting breast milk into the mouth of a kneeling man dressed in ecclesiastical clothing over fears it could offend Christians. This ban in effect reintroduces censorship on the basis of blasphemy. Blasphemy laws were repealed in England and Wales in 2008, and Scotland in 2024. Humanists UK is calling on the ASA to overturn the ban. Censoring adverts on grounds of causing religious offence amounts to a de facto anti-blasphemy law, which is an unreasonable restriction on free expression. The ASA has applied a similar ban on adverts in the past even though the law is clear that blasphemy cannot be treated as an offence and this level of censorship oversteps their remit. The ASA is the self-regulator of almost all advertising space in the UK. It maintains a Code on Advertising Practice, and routinely bans adverts that don’t comply with the Code. The Code says ‘Marketing communications must not contain anything that is likely to cause …

Jon Kenny, an Irish comedian and actor known for D’Unbelievables and roles on Father Ted, has died aged 66. His wife Margie told local news outlet the Limerick Leader that the comedian had died on Friday evening in Galway Clinic. In a statement to the newspaper, Kenny’s family said he had a cardiac arrest early on 10 November. They added the comedian “grabbed life and shook it as hard as he could getting every ounce of fun, madness and love from it”. They also said: “His wit, humour, generosity and kindness will outlast his passing. The memories and stories of those who knew him will be his legend.” Kenny was best known as half of the comedy duo with Pat Shortt called D’Unbelievables in the 1980s. He also made two guest appearances in Father Ted as Michael Cocheese and Fred Rickwood. The comedian was reunited with Shortt in the 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin, where both had small roles. Paying tribute, Taoiseach Simon Harris called the Limerick actor a “gifted performer,” while Sinn Fein …

Comedian Marcus Brigstocke reveals he was addicted to pornography | Ents & Arts News

Comedian Marcus Brigstocke has revealed he became addicted to pornography and received help to overcome the issue. The TV star discussed the issue on The Hidden 20% podcast, saying he became addicted after he had an affair which led to the end of his first marriage. Brigstocke, who has regularly been a panellist on Have I Got News For You and featured in the film Love Actually, said the “shame” from his affair “led to a lot of very dysfunctional behaviour”. He told the podcast: “I’d stayed sober from drugs, alcohol, and my compulsive eating disorder, but I had become addicted to porn. “I really had no idea that I was addicted to it. I sort of thought I looked at a normal amount of porn. Well, the normal amount of porn today is not like a normal amount of porn… before the internet.” Brigstocke, 51, told host Ben Branson that most porn addicts “were addicted from about the age of 11”, saying it “profoundly alters your brain chemistry”. “There are so many people with …

Comedian and podcaster Russell Brand now talking about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit – OpentheWord.org

Russell Brand discussing the Baptism of the Holy Spirit on X Credit: X capture. @rustyrockets It has been interesting watching Russell Brand’s faith journey. Brand is a British, comedian, actor, and podcaster. It started showing up last year when Russell spoke of an increased interest in the Bible and spiritual things, which he shared in Instagram and X posts. Then earlier this year, he started posting about water baptism and asking people what they thought about that. This led to him eventually being baptized in the River Thames, on Sunday, April 28, 2024. The full immersion baptism was performed by another reality star, Bear Grylls. Since then, Brand has been posting about what may be the next step in his spiritual journey, getting baptized or filled with the Holy Spirit. Though we are uncertain what church he is attending, it seems to be charismatic, and the Vicar’s name is Dave, suggesting it might be a charismatic Anglican church. In a recent X post, Brand stated that he was at church on Sunday, May 19, 2024, …
