You probably have a friend who either signed up for coaching or perhaps decided to become a life coach. Coaching is not new, but it has become especially popular since COVID-19. This could be due to women needing to stay home to homeschool, because of job loss, or requiring extra income. As someone who has practiced psychotherapy, who has been on the receiving end of therapy and coaching, and who has become a coach, I have a few things to share. Which to choose, why, and when Choose a coach when you feel energized and hopeful about the future—but you need some guidance, a guide on the side, someone who has bridged the path before you and can show you the way. Just think of the traditional coaches you have hired—the lean woman with the muscles, discipline, and resilience that make working out a cinch, the writing coach who has the map and expertise to get your book in a bookstore near you. You look for a coach when you see a person doing something …
Intensive mentoring for troubled schoolchildren using football kickabouts can significantly enhance wellbeing, increasing happiness equivalent to an unemployed adult getting a job, a study has found. A project involving more than 2,000 pupils in dozens of secondary schools in Greater Manchester showed that instead of wellbeing declining among pupils at risk of exclusion who had behavioural issues and special educational needs, their happiness scores increased. The charity behind the approach, Football Beyond Borders (FBB), sends mentors, or “coaches”, into schools to act as trusted adults for at-risk children. Part of the coaches’ work is using aspects of football games – such as dealing with anger at being fouled or the pressure of taking a penalty – to teach children how to cope and build better relationships. The results have caught the attention of Lord O’Donnell, a former head of the civil service, who is lobbying Keir Starmer to measure all policy choices by their impact on wellbeing if Labour forms the next government. An assessment of the project by Pro Bono Economics, chaired by O’Donnell, …
Sevilla’s Argentina defender Marcos Acuna and coaching staff were the target of “racist and xenophobic insults” from fans in the 1-0 LaLiga win at Getafe on Saturday, the club said. Referee Iglesias Villanueva stopped the match in the 68th minute as part of LaLiga’s protocol against racism. “We condemn the racist and xenophobic insults suffered by Marcos Acuna and our coaching staff,” Sevilla said in a statement published on the social media platform X. LaLiga added in a statement: “There is no place for racist or hateful behaviour in sport. LaLiga vehemently condemns any racist act and will continue to work to eradicate this inexcusable behaviour from our sport.” Sevilla coach Quique Sanchez Flores said he had also received xenophobic insults against him as fans called him a “gypsy” in a derogatory manner. “First, I want to say that I am proud of every pore in my veins that can breathe gypsy. But it’s one thing to be a gypsy and another to use it as a racist insult. I find it abhorrent,” said Sanchez. …
Nottingham Forest have been fined 75,000 pounds ($95,000) after failing to ensure proper behaviour from their players and staff during their Premier League game against Liverpool, the FA said on Wednesday. The 1-0 defeat by Liverpool on March 2 ended in chaos after the final whistle when referee Paul Tierney was surrounded by Forest’s coaching team who were angered by his decision not to return the ball to the home side after a restart shortly before Liverpool’s 99th-minute winning goal. Coach Steven Reid, who was shown a red card, received a two-match touchline ban and was fined 5,000 pounds ($6,300) after he admitted in an FA hearing that his language towards the referee was abusive and insulting. “The club admitted that it failed to ensure its players and technical area occupants did not behave in an improper way after the final whistle,” the FA said in a statement. “The Club is advised to take greater responsibility for the behaviour of its players.” ($1 = 0.7918 pounds) Source link
A historic Surrey pub has reopened following a £4m refurbishment. The White Horse, located on Dorking’s high street, has been transformed into a 100-cover food-led pub with rooms by Heartwood Inns. Richard Ferrier, CEO at Heartwood Collection, said: “We’ve taken incredible care when restoring this important building; it dates back to the 13th century and is believed to be where Dickens wrote his first ever novel, the Pickwick Papers. “We know it’s a cherished local pub on the high street, so it was hugely important to us to do it justice. We hope people in Dorking and beyond will fall in love with it all over again once they come and get settled in for a Sunday roast, a pint or a stay.” The White Horse is the Heartwood group’s first pub with rooms under its plans to grow to over 60 sites by 2027 with a turnover of £133m. Heartwood has already confirmed four other pubs with rooms sites are to open in 2024. Source link
Barbara Olsen/Pexels Training horses and riders makes me aware of the many layers in teaching and coaching—layers that everyone recognizes after the fact but which we don’t consider consciously often enough. These layers are part of every teaching and learning process—sports, academics, emotional relationships, general knowledge, and life skills. At the first and most basic layer, I teach horses specific maneuvers. You might, too, or maybe you teach human athletes a sport or school students in a subject like math or literature. We are all teaching our students to complete some task. Perhaps the task is to solve an algebraic equation, kick a football, comprehend Beowulf, or ride a horse. I teach horses to stand still when they don’t want to, to canter around corners without falling over while carrying riders, or to leap over obstacles that look scary. We tend to focus most on this primary level. In fact, many coaches and teachers do not think beyond that level at all, at least not consciously. The athlete or student or animal must learn to …

DeShaun Foster, UCLA: The Bruins are giving Foster, a former Tustin High standout, his first head coaching job. There weren’t many options to choose from when Kelly exited as most programs already had their coaches in place for the 2024 season. Foster’s familiarity with the Bruins can only bode well for UCLA, which enters the Big Ten next season with a difficult schedule that features games at Louisiana State, Penn State and Washington and home games against Oregon and USC. Sherrone Moore, Michigan: The 38-year-old offensive coordinator is the Wolverines’ first Black head coach. In 2023, Moore filled in for Harbaugh four times when Harbaugh was serving two suspensions involving alleged recruiting violations and a sign-stealing scheme, and Michigan won all four games. Ken Niumatalolo, San José State: UCLA lost a decorated coach when Niumatalolo left Westwood to replace Brent Brennan, who replaced Jedd Fisch at Arizona. Niumatalolo is the winningest coach in Navy history, going 109-83 in 15 seasons before being fired after the 2022 game against Army. He served as UCLA’s director of …
Can an AI be your mentor? That’s what a startup called Practica believes. The company, which evolved out of a marketplace for one-on-one executive coaching, has now launched an AI system built on top of an existing knowledge base it developed over the years spent with a large group of human coaches. The resulting AI chatbot experience functions as a personalized workplace mentor and coach that can aid professionals in bettering their skills across a dozen different topics, including management, strategy, sales, personal development, growth, customer success, marketing, data, design, finance, and more. Originally co-founded in January 2020 by Dave Whitemore, former Thinkful Head of Product (which exited to Chegg), and former Dropbox engineering manager, Andy Scheff, Practica initially tackled the problem around continuous upskilling throughout your career with a traditional executive coaching marketplace. “We both became executive coaches,” explains Whitemore. “Andy and I both plunged ourselves into it…I coached product managers and Andy coached engineers,” he says. Later that year, the site grew by adding a marketplace for other executive coaches, and today it …
