Children see art differently – our eye-tracking research shows how museums and art classes can capture their attention

Adults and children view art in completely different ways. Carrying out research at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum in 2017, my colleagues and I found that when adults look at an artwork, they are guided by their existing knowledge and expectations. For example, when observing Van Gogh’s View of Auvers, adults’ attention may be captured by the distinctive brushstrokes they associate with the artist’s other iconic works. But we found that children take a different view. Free from the social and cultural frameworks that shape adult perception, they are driven by stimuli such as bright colours or bold shapes. For instance, when viewing Van Gogh’s Daubigny’s Garden, they are naturally drawn to the red roses that stand out against the green background. It makes sense that these differences must affect children’s experiences of visiting an art gallery or museum. But while many museums have launched interactive learning activities tailored to children – such as creative workshops and scavenger hunts – there are still many exhibits where children’s only access to information is through labels written for …

More Art School Classes Are Teaching AI This Fall

When undergraduate students return to the Ringling College of Art and Design this fall, one of the school’s newest offerings will be an AI certificate. Ringling is just the latest of several top art schools to offer undergraduate students courses that focus on or integrate artificial intelligence tools and techniques. ARTnews spoke to experts and faculty at Ringling, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and Florida State University about how they construct curriculum; how they teach AI in consideration of its limitations and concerns about ethics and legal issues; as well as why they think it’s important for artists to learn. Related Articles “Knowing how these tools work and how they don’t work, and what they can do and what they can’t do is, we think an important step in a successful artist standing out, right?” Ringling’s AI coordinator, Rick Dakan, told ARTnews. “There’s a million different ways you can apply AI that aren’t having it write the story or make the art for you.” Ringling’s certificate requires the completion of …

Share your experience of private antenatal classes in the UK | Pregnancy

We’re keen to hear from people who’ve participated in private antenatal classes across the UK in order to prepare themselves for pregnancy and parenthood. What sort of information were you taught by your course leaders about pregnancy, childbirth, and caring for a baby? Did you find the information to be useful and evidence-based? Or were there statements or comments that gave you pause for thought? Was one mode of birth, whether Caesarean or vaginal, favoured over another, and, if so, how was that preference communicated? Do you feel that the antenatal course adequately prepared you for the realities of childbirth, or did it set you up with unrealistic expectations? Share your experience We would like to hear from people who have taken private antenatal classes in the UK. Your responses, which can be anonymous, are secure as the form is encrypted and only the Guardian has access to your contributions. We will only use the data you provide us for the purpose of the feature and we will delete any personal data when we no …

Bible Classes Are Coming to a Public School Near You

Bible Classes Are Coming to a Public School Near You

It seems to happen every time a law or policy that privileges religious belief is passed, it gets exploited to be used as a sword against those of us who don’t believe or who support separation of religion and government. A ten-year-old Ohio law created to allow students to get high school credit for religious lessons is now being used to inject bible classes into public schools. Leading the charge to convert public school children is LifeWise Academy and they are planning on coming to a public school near you. To be clear, the current prohibition on having religious classes in a public school still exists but LifeWise is trying to get around settled law by exploiting another US Supreme Court case—ZORACH v. CLAUSON, 343 U.S. 306 (1952)—that decided released time religious instruction policies and laws didn’t violate the constitution. Released Time Religious Instruction (RTRI) is where, with parental permission, a student can leave school to attend a religious activity. In my public school days, RTRI was used, for example, by students of the Catholic …

Harlem church offers vegan cooking classes to promote healthy lifestyle

Harlem church offers vegan cooking classes to promote healthy lifestyle

NEW YORK (RNS) — On a recent Sunday afternoon, staff members of Harlem’s Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church traded their Saturday church clothes for aprons as they prepared to host the church’s vegan cooking class. Throughout April, congregants and Harlem neighbors were invited to multiple Sunday afternoon events at the church — which, as part of the Seventh-day Adventist tradition, holds services on Saturdays — to learn to cook savory plant-based recipes, get tips on growing vegetables in urban gardens and hear advice on how to avoid processed foods. The initiative, imagined by the church’s health ministry, was named “Taste & See” as a nod to a verse in Psalm 34, proclaiming: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” “We’re showing people that you can eat healthy and satisfy your taste buds,” said Karen Phipps, director of the church’s health ministry. The church created the ministry two years ago to promote the Seventh-day Adventist lifestyle. Since its founding in the early 1860s, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has encouraged believers to give their bodies the best …

UCLA protests: Classes canceled, UC president launches investigation

UCLA protests: Classes canceled, UC president launches investigation

UCLA was reeling Wednesday after hours of violence that unfolded overnight at a pro-Palestinian encampment, heightening concerns about the university’s handling of the protests over the Gaza war and the future of the camp. Just before midnight, a large group, wearing black outfits and white masks, arrived on campus and tried to tear down the barricades surrounding the encampment. Campers, some holding lumber and wearing goggles and helmets, rallied to defend the site’s perimeter. Over several hours, counterdemonstrators hurled objects, including wood and a metal barrier, at the camp and those inside. Fights repeatedly broke out. Some tried to force their way into the camp, and the pro-Palestinian side used pepper spray to defend themselves. Fireworks were also launched into the camp. The attack went uncountered for three hours, until dozens of officers from the California Highway Patrol, LAPD and other agencies arrived and restored order. The slow response sparked criticism and calls for investigations. In a letter to the University of California Board of Regents obtained by The Times, UC President Michael V. Drake …

How marketing classes can rescue ‘ugly produce’ from becoming food waste

How marketing classes can rescue ‘ugly produce’ from becoming food waste

Indeed, some estimates suggest that approximately 40% of fruits and vegetables never even leave farms. Much of it gets rejected by wholesalers and retailers based on irregularities in weight, size or shape. This desire for cosmetically appealing food also extends to consumers, as we often prefer picture-perfect produce. Unsurprisingly, this wanton waste takes a significant environmental toll, with an estimated 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions tied to unconsumed food.   Showing ugly produce some love Some companies have taken strides to counter food waste. A prominent example in the United States is Misfits Market, which launched in 2018. By buying misshapen and ugly produce and reselling it at discount prices in subscription boxes, Misfits Market has grown into a billion-dollar business. Closer to home, Loblaw Companies’ “naturally imperfect” line offers visually unappealing produce at lower prices, while newcomers such as Montréal-based Food Hero are developing apps to reduce a different but persistent form of waste by helping customers find deals on food approaching its best-by date. Despite such encouraging efforts, there’s still a lot …

Philippines suspends in-person classes due to heat, jeepney strike

Philippines suspends in-person classes due to heat, jeepney strike

MANILA: The Philippines will suspend in-person classes in all public schools for two days due to extreme heat and a nationwide strike by jeepney drivers, the country’s education department said on Sunday (Apr 28). Extreme heat has scorched Southeast Asia in recent weeks, prompting thousands of schools to suspend in-person operations and authorities to issue health warnings. Many schools in the Philippines have no air-conditioning, leaving students to swelter in crowded, poorly ventilated classrooms. “In view of the latest heat index forecast … and the announcement of a nationwide transport strike, all public schools nationwide shall implement asynchronous classes/distance learning on April 29 and 30, 2024,” the department said on Facebook. The education department oversees more than 47,000 schools across the country. Some jeepney drivers also plan to hold a three-day nationwide strike starting on Monday to protest the government’s plan to phase out the smoke-belching vehicles used by many Filipinos to commute to work and school. The suspension of in-person classes comes after Manila recorded its highest-ever temperature. Source link

A Science Teacher Promised His Classes In 1978 They’d All Watch The Eclipse Together

A Science Teacher Promised His Classes In 1978 They’d All Watch The Eclipse Together

Teachers can have a lasting impact on their students’ lives, often in ways that they don’t expect. When you’re standing in front of a classroom of kids, it can be hard to know if they’re hearing you at all, let alone absorbing the lessons you’re trying to impart. One educator recently discovered just how meaningful he was in the eyes of his students. A teacher who promised his classes in 1978 that they would watch the solar eclipse together fulfilled his promise 46 years later. In 1978, Pat Moriarty was in his first year teaching junior high science in Webster, New York. After one particular lesson covering eclipses, Moriarty told his class that the next time their town was in the pathway of a total solar eclipse, he’d host a party for everyone to watch together. RELATED: The 3 Interesting Ways Your Pets Will Likely React To The Total Solar Eclipse On April 8 Moriarty shared that his students “looked at [him] like [he] was crazy,” as the next total solar eclipse in their area was …

Louvre to host workout classes as part of 2024 Summer Olympics

Louvre to host workout classes as part of 2024 Summer Olympics

Apart from the canvases that line the Louvre’s walls, there typically isn’t much stretching in France’s most famous museum.  But with the 2024 Summer Olympics on the horizon, the Louvre is embracing the atmosphere and has announced it will host dance, yoga, and workout classes in the galleries while surrounded works of art, according to the Guardian. The program, called “Run in the Louvre”, launched on Wednesday with visitors enjoying 10-minute sessions including yoga in the museum’s Cour Marly, which is filled with French sculptures from King Louis XIV’s chateau in Marly. “The Louvre is physically in the center of Paris. It will be physically at the center of the Olympic Games,” the Louvre’s director Laurence des Cars said. The Louvre is not the only cultural landmark in the City of Lights that will take part in the Olympic spirit. A temporary stadium built on the Place de la Concorde will host the skateboarding and breakdancing events, the Musee d’Orsay will host Olympic-related sports and cultural activities, and the opening ceremony will take place on the Seine, …
