Check Out These Extraordinary New Images of Mercury

Check Out These Extraordinary New Images of Mercury

At 06:59 Central European time time on January 8, the BepiColombo spacecraft successfully performed its sixth flyby of Mercury, the innermost planet in the solar system. This was a “gravity assist maneuver,” a move that used Mercury’s gravitational pull to alter the BepiColombo vehicle’s course, which will bring it into orbit around the planet by the end of 2026. BepiColombo is a joint mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) that will study the composition of Mercury. The vehicle, consisting of two probes—ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter and JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter—was launched in the fall of 2018 and had previously been orbiting the sun. When it approaches Mercury again, the vehicle will separate, and the two probes will head for their dedicated polar orbits. BepiColombo’s scientific work is then scheduled for early 2027, when the probes will look for information on how the planet was formed and whether some of its craters contain water in the form of ice. Until then, we will have to make do with …

Check out this awesome looking new four-wheeled electric bike

Sixthreezero’s wide range of electric bike models includes some fairly out-there models, but the company’s new four-wheeled electric bike really charts a new direction in the industry. Take a look at the new ANYterrain Stabilized 4-wheel Electric Bike. It’s a mouthful of a name, but the ANYterrain Stabilized 4-wheel Electric Bike hauls more than just a bunch of extra words. The bike is rated to carry up to 350 lb (159 kg), and the 750W motor ensures it has the power to do so. With speeds of up to 20 mph (32 km/h), the quad bike is just as fast as most Class 1 and 2 e-bikes. But the real game changer here is the design, offering four-wheeled stability that riders can’t get from a conventional three-wheeled trike. Not only do four wheels provide better stability with a wider footprint, but the steering on the bike uses leaning geometry to take turns more naturally, helping riders feel even more stable. With 20″ wheels in the rear and 16″ wheels in the front, the quad bike …

Check out this $800 rotating VR chair for Meta Quest

VR locomotion is a hard problem that has produced all sort of interesting peripherals, from the Virtuix Omni treadmill to the 3DRudder footboard. There’s been a ceiling on success for these sorts of devices, owing to things like price, size and limited adoption of VR headsets. London-based Roto VR is delivering its own solution to the problem of moving in VR in the form of a $799 spinning gaming chair. It’s the first of its kind to boast a “Made for Meta” seal of approval. The system is designed to address issues around 360-degree viewing in the VR space. Roto also claims that the system helps address the very real (trust me) issue of virtual reality motion sickness. Presumably since the motion of the chair is synced with what your eyes see, you’re less likely to get the kind of nausea that stems from a brain-body disconnect. The Roto VR Explorer looks like a fairly standard wheeled swivel chair, aside from the tiered back support and a massive base that looks a bit like a …

Take off, touch down, check in: why it’s time to embrace the airport hotel | For the stay

Take off, touch down, check in: why it’s time to embrace the airport hotel | For the stay

It’s incredible to think that, in 1959, when Hilton opened the world’s first airport hotel, Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayfront, it was a real revelation. The man behind the launch was Barron Hilton, and the hotel’s opening combined his then-position as vice-president of Hilton Hotels with a lifelong fascination with aviation. As a child living in Dallas, Texas, he’d ride his bicycle to a nearby airfield and watch the planes take off and land. “I’d go and stare at those planes, trying to figure out when I’d be able to fly one,” he said later. And, as soon as he could, he did. While stationed with the US navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during the second world war, the 17-year-old Hilton took flying lessons at a civilian air base on the north shore of Oahu. Having earned his twin-engine pilot’s licence in 1946, at the age of just 19, he attended the University of Southern California aeronautical school. Perhaps only a pilot, regularly travelling back and forth to an airfield, could come up with the …

Staffers Were Told Biden Was Leaving Race in Email Telling Them to Check X

Staffers Were Told Biden Was Leaving Race in Email Telling Them to Check X

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign staff didn’t receive official communication that he was dropping out until nearly 20 minutes after the announcement went up on social media. When they finally did get an email, it directed them to Biden’s post on X. “Team, sharing with you the letter from President Biden that was released just now. We will have more information later this afternoon,” Biden campaign managers Jen O’Malley Dillon and Julie Chavez Rodriguez wrote in an all-staff email timestamped at 2:03 pm Eastern. “Look out for an invite to an all staff call. We are so grateful to be part of this team with you all. More soon.” The email linked to a letter Biden had posted on X more than 15 minutes earlier, at 1:46 pm ET, announcing that he would no longer be seeking reelection. Politico reported that campaign aides had been whipping delegates at the very moment the letter was posted. The New York Times reported that aides as senior as Anita Dunn, who manages communications strategy for Biden, learned that …

Check which party could win in your constituency under YouGov projection | Politics News

A new YouGov poll projects Labour are on course for a 200-seat majority at the general election – while the Tories will slump to their lowest-ever number of MPs. If this and other similar polls are accurate, it suggests Britain is on the cusp of a fundamental redrawing of the political landscape compared to five years ago. The projection suggests the Tories will lose more than half of the 365 seats won by the party under Boris Johnson in 2019 – plummeting to 108 MPs. The polling for the projection was conducted from last Tuesday until this Tuesday with 39,979 people interviewed online. It used the MRP technique – a type of poll that gets pundits excited because it draws from large amounts of data, including a large sample size. It aims to predict which party will win in every single parliamentary seat. Here you can check which party will win in your constituency under the YouGov projection: Source link

Parents Can Get 15 Hours Free Childcare — Here’s How To Check If You’re Eligible

Parents Can Get 15 Hours Free Childcare — Here’s How To Check If You’re Eligible

For thousands of parents April 2024 was a big month when it came to childcare changes. The UK government rolled out its first phase of funding which meant families were able to access 15 hours of free childcare. The government-funded project is aimed at to help families tackle the rising costs, so from last month many parents of two-year-olds were able to apply. This month another set of parents will also be benefitting as the second phase of government funding will roll out. From May 12, 2024, eligible working parents will be able to apply for 15 hours of government-funded childcare for children aged between nine months and 23-months-old. When can I apply for 15 hours free childcare? Currently, parents are able to apply for 30 hours of free childcare if they have a three or four year old. Alongside this parents with two-year-olds can already access 15 hours free support. The big changes are from September 2024 where 15 hours of childcare support will be extended to eligible working parents with a child from …

Check out the ‘world’s first’ DC-to-DC solar-powered EV charger

Photo: Enteligent California-based Enteligent is accepting pre-orders for what it claims is the world’s first DC-to-DC solar-powered EV charger. The solar EV charging tech company launched its product in February 2023 at Intersolar North America in Long Beach, California, and now it’s ready to take pre-orders. The TLCEV T1 solar EV charger can supply up to 12.5 kW of DC charging – twice as fast as many AC EV chargers – and it allows at-home, at-work, and at-store charging powered directly by existing solar panels. EV owners usually plug their cars into home chargers that are powered by an alternating current (AC) flow of energy generated from the electric grid. However, EV batteries operate on a direct current (DC), requiring the power to be converted from AC to DC in the charging process. Enteligent says its charger’s DC-to-DC conversion results in 20% energy savings and bypasses the EV’s internal conversion electronics, shortening charge time. The TLCEV T1 charger’s design integrates EV charging directly into solar canopies and carports. (It can be connected to an existing …

Here’s How to Check Your iPhone’s Battery Health

Here’s How to Check Your iPhone’s Battery Health

Earlier this year, Apple retested the batteries of its iPhone 15 models and updated its battery life claims for the entire series, suggesting that they offer better longevity than previously thought. Curious about the battery health of your iPhone 15? Here’s how to check it. Apple in February 2024 updated the technical specifications for the batteries in the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to its latest tests, Apple says that the devices’ batteries are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. It’s a significant improvement over the 500 charge cycles that the company advertises for all older iPhone models over the same cycle count. iPhone 15 models also include a Battery Charging Optimization feature, so if you regularly charge your ‌iPhone‌ up at night while you’re asleep, the device can limit its charging to 80%, and then wait for an hour or so before you wake up to charge the remaining 20%. This keeps the ‌iPhone‌ at …
