Hackers Can Spy on Your Chats With Almost Any AI, Experts Find

Be careful what you tell AI chatbots, because apparently it’s easy for hackers to spy on those conversations. “Currently, anybody can read private chats sent from ChatGPT and other services,” Yisroel Mirsky, the head of the Offensive AI Research Lab at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University, told Ars Technica in an email. “This includes malicious actors on the same Wi-Fi or LAN as a client (e.g., same coffee shop), or even a malicious actor on the internet — anyone who can observe the traffic.” These types of hacks, as the report explained, are what’s known as “side-channel attacks,” which involve third parties inferring data passively using metadata or other indirect exposures rather than breaching security firewalls. While this sort of exploit can occur with any kind of tech, AI appears particularly vulnerable because its encryption efforts are not necessarily up to snuff. “The attack is passive and can happen without OpenAI or their client’s knowledge,” the researcher revealed. “OpenAI encrypts their traffic to prevent these kinds of eavesdropping attacks, but our research shows that the way OpenAI is …

Hackers can read your encrypted AI-assistant chats

Hackers can read your encrypted AI-assistant chats

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University have discovered a vulnerability in cloud-based AI assistants like Chat GTP. The vulnerability, according to researchers, means that hackers are able to intercept and decrypt conversations between people and these AI assistants. The researchers found that chatbots such as Chat-GPT send responses in small tokens broken into little parts in order to speed up the encryption process. But by doing this, the tokens can be intercepted by hackers. These hackers in turn can analyze the length, size, and sequence of these tokens in order to decrypt their responses. “Currently, anybody can read private chats sent from ChatGPT and other services,” Yisroel Mirsky, head of the Offensive AI Research Lab, told ArsTechnica in an email “This includes malicious actors on the same Wi-Fi or LAN as a client (e.g., same coffee shop), or even a malicious actor on the Internet—anyone who can observe the traffic. In Berlin, Sirine gave birth to her first child – a daughter called Ischtar – and she wanted more than anything for her mother to meet her. But before they had chance, tragedy struck. Image: Sirine’s mother Najah Najah died unexpectedly from kidney failure in 2018 at the age of 82. “She was a guiding force in my life,” Sirine says of her mother. “She taught me how to love myself. “The whole thing was cruel because it happened suddenly. “I really, really wanted her to meet my daughter and I wanted to have that last reunion.” The grief was unbearable, says Sirine. WhatsApp Chats Will Soon Work With Other Encrypted Messaging Apps

WhatsApp Chats Will Soon Work With Other Encrypted Messaging Apps

Meanwhile, Julia Weis, a spokesperson for the Swiss messaging app Threema, says that while WhatsApp did approach it to discuss its interoperability plans, the proposed system didn’t meet Threema’s security and privacy standards. “WhatsApp specifies all the protocols, and we’d have no way of knowing what actually happens with the user data that gets transferred to WhatsApp—after all, WhatsApp is closed source,” Weis says. (WhatsApp’s privacy policy states how it uses people’s data). When the EU first announced that messaging apps may have to work together in early 2022, many leading cryptographers opposed the idea, saying it adds complexity and potentially introduces more security and privacy risks. Carmela Troncoso, an associate professor at the Swiss university École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, who focuses on security and privacy engineering, says interoperability moves could potentially lead to different power relationships between companies, depending on how they are implemented. “This move for interoperability will, on the one hand, open the market, but also maybe close the market in the sense that now the bigger players are going to …

Meta AI adds Reels support and ‘reimagine,’ a way to generate new AI images in group chats, and more

Meta AI adds Reels support and ‘reimagine,’ a way to generate new AI images in group chats, and more

Alongside other AI updates announced today, Meta AI, the company’s generative AI experience, is gaining new capabilities starting today, including the ability to create new AI images when prompted as well as support for Reels. The former, a feature called “reimagine” allows users in group chats to have more fun by recreating AI images with prompts, while the latter can turn to Reels as a resource as needed. To use reimagine in a group chat, a user would first generate an AI image with a prompt using Meta AI, the company’s virtual assistant that can answer questions or generate images. A friend could then press and hold on the image to add another text prompt and Meta AI will generate an entirely new image, based on their changes. Friends can then go back and forth, recreating the image with multiple prompts as they try to one-up each other with even wilder ideas. If successful, the feature could increase engagement time with Meta’s apps as users toy around with the new AI capabilities. Image Credits: Meta …
