Tips for ChatGPT’s Voice Mode? Best AI Uses for Retirees? Our Expert Answers Your Questions

Thank you so much to all the readers who tuned in live to participate in the second installment of our question and answer series focused on artificial intelligence. I was thrilled to see so many questions come in before the event, as well as all the questions that were dropped into the chat during our conversation. Missed the broadcast? We’ve got your back. Below is a replay of this event that WIRED subscribers can watch whenever. Also, the livestream from the first one is available here. I started off the chat with a couple quick demos showing how to use the image and voice features built into chatbots, including an example of how it’s possible to interact with ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode as a kind of Duolingo-style language learning tool. For a deeper dive into a few of the live questions we discussed, I’d suggest checking out my AI advice column for December, tackling questions about proper attribution for generative tools and how to teach the next generation about AI. If you’re interested in experimenting …

Mysterious AI surfaces online — was it ChatGPT’s succesor?

Mysterious AI surfaces online — was it ChatGPT’s succesor?

A mysterious AI chatbot labelled ‘gpt2-chatbot’ was briefly available online before subsequently disappearing again. The chatbot quietly made its debut on the website LMSYS Chatbot Arena — a website which is used to benchmark, compare, and rank different AI systems. Based on its name, some are speculating that the tool might be an earlier version of OpenAI‘s chatbot language model, GPT-2. But users have noted that the language model seems equally as powerful — or more powerful than — GPT-4, OpenAI’s more recent and advanced language model. In fact, some netizens found that the language model performed better than GPT-4 on certain tests. This has led to speculation that the “gpt2-chatbot” could be an early prototype of GPT-5, or perhaps a more updated, advanced version of GPT-4 which, for all intents and purposes, can be considered GPT-4.5. Thanks for the incredible enthusiasm from our community! We really didn’t see this coming. Just a couple of things to clear up: – In line with our policy, we’ve worked with several model developers in the past to …

ChatGPT’s chatbot rival Claude to be introduced on iPhone | Artificial intelligence (AI)

ChatGPT’s chatbot rival Claude to be introduced on iPhone | Artificial intelligence (AI)

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is facing serious competition, as the company’s rival Anthropic brings its Claude chatbot to iPhones. Anthropic, led by a group of former OpenAI staff who quit over differences with chief executive Sam Altman, have a product that already beats ChatGPT on some measures of intelligence, and now wants to win over everyday users. “In today’s world, smartphones are at the centre of how people interact with technology. To make Claude a true AI assistant, it’s crucial that we meet users where they are – and in many cases, that’s on their mobile devices,” said Scott White at Anthropic. “We’re putting the power of Claude directly into people’s hands. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about integrating Claude into the fabric of our daily lives.” The third version of the Claude large language model is offered direct to users on its website in three flavours: a speedy and simple model called “haiku”, a slower and more powerful model called “sonnet”, and, for paying customers only, the full “opus” system. It is that system that …

ChatGPT’s ‘hallucination’ issue hit with privacy complaint

ChatGPT’s ‘hallucination’ issue hit with privacy complaint

OpenAI has been hit with another complaint, after advocacy group NOYB accused it of failing to correct inaccurate information disseminated by its AI chatbot ChatGPT, potentially violating EU privacy regulations. According to Reuters, NOYB reported that the complainant in their case, a public figure, asked about his birthday through ChatGPT but received incorrect information repeatedly instead of being informed by the chatbot that it lacked the necessary data. The group also stated that the Microsoft-backed firm denied the complainant’s requests to correct or delete the data, claiming that data correction was not possible, and failed to provide any details regarding the data processed, its sources, or its recipients. NOYB reported that it had issued a complaint with the Austrian data protection authority, urging an inquiry into OpenAI’s data processing practices and the steps taken to guarantee the precision of personal data managed by the company’s expansive language models. Maartje de Graaf, NOYB data protection lawyer, said in a statement: “It’s clear that companies are currently unable to make chatbots like ChatGPT comply with EU law, …

ChatGPT’s ‘hallucination’ problem hit with another privacy complaint in EU

ChatGPT’s ‘hallucination’ problem hit with another privacy complaint in EU

OpenAI is facing another privacy complaint in the European Union. This one, which has been filed by privacy rights nonprofit noyb on behalf of an individual complainant, targets the inability of its AI chatbot ChatGPT to correct misinformation it generates about individuals. The tendency of GenAI tools to produce information that’s plain wrong has been well documented. But it also sets the technology on a collision course with the bloc’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) — which governs how the personal data of regional users can be processed. Penalties for GDPR compliance failures can reach up to 4% of global annual turnover. Rather more importantly for a resource-rich giant like OpenAI: Data protection regulators can order changes to how information is processed, so GDPR enforcement could reshape how generative AI tools are able to operate in the EU. OpenAI was already forced to make some changes after an early intervention by Italy’s data protection authority, which briefly forced a local shut down of ChatGPT back in 2023. Now noyb is filing the latest GDPR complaint …

How to Stop ChatGPT’s Voice Feature From Interrupting You

How to Stop ChatGPT’s Voice Feature From Interrupting You

I was recently waiting for my nails to dry and didn’t want to smudge the paint, when it dawned on me that this would be the perfect opportunity to test some voice-only artificial intelligence features. Silicon Valley car owners are having long conversations with ChatGPT as they drive around, and I wanted to try chatting hands-free before meeting with two OpenAI product leads later that day. Even though chatbots can be helpful for brainstorms, speaking back-and-forth with ChatGPT was like collaborating with an over-caffeinated friend who can’t stand even a second of silence. I was valiantly fighting against the artificial intelligence tool to finish a single, complete thought before it cut me off. Me: I wrote a newsletter called AI Unlocked last year for our readers. In that newsletter, I … ChatGPT: Tell me more about your newsletter and what specific question you have in mind related to it. Only a couple minutes into the experiment, I experienced synthetic-speech-induced stage fright and pleaded with the chatbot for more time, asking for it to give me …

OpenAI makes ChatGPT’s accessible without requiring sign ups

OpenAI makes ChatGPT’s accessible without requiring sign ups

OpenAI will start allowing users to access its free-to-use ChatGPT generative AI chatbot without needing to sign up for the service beginning Monday, the Microsoft-backed startup said on Monday. ChatGPT, which kickstarted the GenAI boom in late 2022, can mimic human conversation and perform tasks such as creating summaries of long text, writing poems and even generating ideas for a theme party. The San Francisco-based company said that it will gradually roll out the feature to “make AI accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities.” The popular service, which set a record for the fastest-growing user base, has seen its growth slow down since May 2023, when its traffic peaked at 1.8 billion web visits, according to data analytics firm Similarweb. OpenAI said it has introduced additional content safeguards for users accessing ChatGPT without signing up, such as blocking prompts and generations in a wider range of categories. It did not specify these categories. Apart from the free version of ChatGPT, which does not have direct access to the internet, OpenAI also offers paid versions …

Commentary: ChatGPT’s just a tool, not a threat to your job

Commentary: ChatGPT’s just a tool, not a threat to your job

MORE FACE TIME WITH HUMANS ChatGPT amassed 100 million monthly active users within two months of its launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. To put things into perspective, TikTok took nine months to achieve the same number of users after its global launch, while Instagram reached the same milestone after more than two years. It’s not hard to understand why. Just last week, I worked on a business presentation and was amazed by the time saved with the help of ChatGPT. Normally, when I tackle a presentation, I spend hours brainstorming, organising ideas and meticulously wording each section. When I fed ChatGPT the key points and objectives of my presentation, it churned out a coherent storyboard, including subheadings and a rough script in a blink of an eye. This allowed me to bypass the arduous initial drafting phase and dive straight into refining the content. With ChatGPT handling the grunt work, I’ve been able to dedicate more face time to clients. Additionally, attending networking events and industry conferences has become a more …

How to use ChatGPT’s file analysis capability (and what it can do for you)

How to use ChatGPT’s file analysis capability (and what it can do for you)

Yuichiro Chino/Getty Images OpenAI a week ago unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT called “memory,” which stores things you explicitly ask the program to have access to, for later use.  Alongside memory, it’s good to remember that ChatGPT can also use existing file-upload capabilities to analyze text and images. You just drag and drop a file into the chat window, such as a PDF or a JPEG, add a prompt if you like, and ChatGPT will start to produce some text output based on what you’ve uploaded.  Also: How to use ChatGPT The capability is available to all paying users of the $20-per-month “Plus” version. The Plus version has the added capability of using the latest ChatGPT, version 4, instead of version 3.5, and the quality of output can be noticeably better. Plus also allows the use of DALL-E, the image-generation program.  The most obvious uses for file upload are summarization, outlining, and more advanced kinds of semantic search beyond just keyword search. File upload is easy: Just drag.  The file upload function shines when …
