I asked a personal trainer who uses GLP-1s how weight loss drugs have changed how she works out—here are three exercises she loves right now

GLP-1 medications are an integral part of many people’s weight-loss journeys. One of those is NASM-certified personal trainer Kylie Hansen. “I’ve had bariatric surgery, I currently use a GLP-1 and I’m a personal trainer and nutrition coach,” Hansen tells Fit&Well. Latest Videos FromFit&Well “One of the biggest things I’ve learned through my own weight-loss journey is that seeing the scale go down and building a strong, healthy body are not the same thing. “At this point in my journey, I’m much less interested in exercising just to burn calories or make the scale move. I want muscle.” You may like She adds that she sees muscle as an insurance policy that allows her to live an active life. “I want to be strong, capable and able to continue doing the things I love as I get older.” Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox. RJ Mitte: How Breaking Bad star changed the way we see cerebral palsy

Mitte was aged three when he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which the NHS describes as the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and co-ordination caused by a problem with the brain that develops around birth. He was cast in Breaking Bad at 14, and told Channel 4 News in 2016 that the show “pioneered a lot of TV and writers to be more brave”. But he added a note of caution, saying: “We still have a long way to go… it’s still a business and we have to do that slowly.” Earlier this month, he hinted that he may be interested in continuing the Breaking Bad story, external, but said any revival would have a lot to live up to. “I just want to top Breaking Bad, that’s the hardest,” he said. “I set a bar for myself as a young man that is kinda unattainable. I tell people, ‘Look, it’s a long way down from the top of the mountain’.” After Breaking Bad, Mitte’s other on-screen credits include Hannah …

My Bluetooth headphones sounded unusually quiet until I changed this Android setting

Are your Bluetooth headphones sounding unusually quiet without any apparent reason? Before you decide that the unit you received may be faulty, or the model has not been tuned well, make sure to check out a few key settings on your Android device. I was recently facing a similar issue. To fix it, I had to access an option that is usually hidden by default and needs to be unlocked manually. Related My phone was sending my Bluetooth speaker the worst possible audio until I flicked this one switch If your speaker’s audio quality is subpar, there are a host of Developer Options settings that can potentially fix the issue. Unlock Developer options to access hidden settings Developer options will show up under System options By default, Developer Options are not visible on most Android handsets. When enabled, you get access to a host of additional settings which can possibly fix the sound quality of your Bluetooth device. Open the Settings app. Navigate to the About Phone section. Contributor: My brother’s last joke changed how I understand grief

Contributor: My brother’s last joke changed how I understand grief

Here’s something funny. My brother Tom died seven years ago. (That’s not the funny part.) Tom was a firefighter, like our father and both grandfathers. He was also on the Massachusetts FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force that worked at the World Trade Center during 9/11. He had run into burning buildings. He had saved lives. He had seen things most of us never will and could perform under extreme pressure. He was the man. A tall, handsome, stoic Irishman with a handlebar mustache. A man best photographed in sepia. A man who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019. My other four brothers and I would visit Tom every few weeks or so, spending time recalling our childhood and mostly making fun of him, our way of showing love. When his condition worsened, Tom’s wife called to say we should visit as soon as possible. I arrived before my other brothers, who were driving together in one car. It was a cool May day, dogwoods and forsythia blooming in his well-manicured yard. Tom …

The Young British Artists’ Collective Reputation Has Changed

The Young British Artists’ Collective Reputation Has Changed

In his latest bestseller, London Falling, Patrick Radden Keefe refers to art in his prologue to illustrate the way the city of London changed near the end of the 20th century: In 1988, a group of young artists used a derelict warehouse in the docklands of southeast London as the venue for their first group exhibition, “Freeze.” He doesn’t say anything else, assuming the reader will know who those artists became: the Young British Artists, or YBAs. Arguably Britain’s most famous artistic group ever, the YBAs were a symptom of their moment. They rocketed to fame in the early ’90s, as London was undergoing a profound renaissance—or rupture, depending on how you look back on it now. Their legacy has ebbed and flowed in parallel with Britain’s national image, peaking in the heady atmosphere of the end of the millennium and gaining nuance as it has fallen ever since. And that legacy has continued to be reexamined in notable exhibitions, among them shows for Tracey Emin at Tate Modern earlier this year, Jenny Saville at …

Gmail stopped loading hidden trackers when I changed this one setting

Your inbox might look clean once spam is filtered out, but that doesn’t mean it is private. Marketing emails and newsletters include tracking pixels that call back to the sender when their images load. Each request registers an open with a timestamp and can be linked to earlier opens to build a profile of when and how often you read. You don’t have to click a link for this to happen, because loading the email images is enough to trigger tracking. Gmail has a setting to stop those requests from firing until you choose to load images. Once it is on, tracking pixels remain blocked unless you display them, allowing you to decide which messages report back and which stay private. Related I had no idea how much Google Maps was tracking me until I found these settings Create a boundary and protect your data How emails track you the moment you open them What happens when you open an email Opening an email does more than display the message content. 7 Things That Changed My Life in September

7 Things That Changed My Life in September

I’m usually very careful about recommending unisex products in this newsletter. So I’ll first preface this recommendation by sharing that I’ve noticed more and more men wearing visible pimple patches (usually from Starface) out and about in New York and LA. A win both for men’s self-expression and men’s skin care! Now, let me introduce you to pimple patches from the skin care company Kindia. They come in the shapes of lotus flowers, jasmine flowers, chandras, and jalebis (a common West Asian sweet snack), and each shape correlates to a different function, ranging from calming active breakouts to soothing already popped pimples. If you’re feeling nervous about taking the leap, maybe wear some around Halloween and tell people you’re dressed as an angsty teen. Kindia GlowGel Hydrocolloid Pimple Patches Jennifer Black at Highland Holistic Acupuncture in Los Angeles is a real miracle worker. She’s gentle and effective with her needle treatments, an intuitive cupper, and not afraid to target aches and pains with some firm gua shua. I can’t recommend her enough. While I was …

how ‘algorithm’ changed its meaning

how ‘algorithm’ changed its meaning

Algorithms are central to modern mathematics and computer science. They are explicit procedures valued for their clarity, efficiency and beauty. Beyond these fields, however, the word “algorithm” is most likely to evoke social media feeds, targeted advertising or a combination of the two of the two. Through algorithms, mathematics has become culturally visible as the force behind opaque processes – with unsettling consequences. Public familiarity with algorithms has grown much faster than familiarity with the mathematical ideas they embody. The changing use of the word algorithm reflects this enhanced visibility. In fact, the meaning of this word has changed dramatically over time, and has always varied between specialist and general use. With the emergence of AI, which is nothing more than a collection of algorithms, this discrepancy has a genuine effect on societal discourse. People sometimes speak of algorithms as they might speak about the weather. Algorithms are simply there, surrounding us, producing broadly similar consequences for everyone while remaining outside individual control. In this sense, algorithms are ambient and impersonal. Yet people also speak …

A moment that changed me: My mother fell off a mountain – and my life began again

A moment that changed me: My mother fell off a mountain – and my life began again

To steal a well-known line, 2023 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure. My annus horribilis began when a long-term relationship broke up in January, only six months after we had bought our first home together. I was about to turn 38 and the future I thought was mine – marriage, children – all fell apart. What followed was blow after blow: my sister announced her engagement, I was told by a fertility doctor that I was “not a suitable candidate” for egg freezing, and I soon began having multiple panic attacks a day. Ordinarily, my work would have been my solace; when I wrote, it was as if time was suspended. But now, my words abandoned me. They would not come, no matter how much I tried. So, in April, I decided to take the rest of the year off to recover. As I was self-employed, this was not a choice I made lightly – but my heart was broken and so too, it seemed, was my brain. …
