On Thursday night, one of King Charles III’s most significant legacies was being celebrated at Casa Cipriani in downtown Manhattan, even though the guest of honor was across the pond. In the months after last year’s coronation, the foundation the king started in 1976 changed its name to the King’s Trust, and for the second year in a row, hosts Lionel Richie and Edward Enninful assembled a bi-continental crowd to celebrate its recent expansion into the US. A Wisconsin museum is partnering with a historical preservation group in a search for the wreckage of the second world war ace fighter pilot Richard Bong’s plane in the South Pacific. The Richard I Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, Wisconsin, and the non-profit second world war historical preservation group Pacific Wrecks announced the search on Friday, Minnesota Public Radio reported. Bong, who grew up in Poplar, Wisconsin, is known for shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft during the second world war. He flew a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane nicknamed “Marge” in honor of his girlfriend, Marjorie Vattendahl. Bong plastered a blown-up portrait of Vattendahl on the nose of the plane, according to a Pacific Wrecks summary of the plane’s service. Bong said at the time that Vattendahl “looks swell, and a hell of a lot better than these naked women painted on most of the airplanes”, the Los Angeles Times reported in Vattendahl’s 2003 obituary. Léon Gautier was famous in France as the last representative of the “Kieffer Commando”, the only French unit to take part in the Allied D-Day landings on Normandy beaches in June 1944. As the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaches, some are seeing opportunities for financial gain. His descendants have decided to seek legal assistance to prevent any abusive or commercial use of his image. Gautier, who died on July 3, 2023 at the age of 100, was a nationally celebrated figure and a near-constant presence at World War II commemorations who used his stature to make sure the lessons of the war were not forgotten.   Having joined the French navy in 1940 at 17, he was one of 177 French green berets of the Kieffer Commando unit to storm the beaches defended by Nazi forces on June 6, 1944.  His passing was marked by a ceremony with military honors presided over by President Emmanuel Macron which took place on the beach in Ouistreham, Normandy, as he and his family had wanted.  Gautier’s life was a remarkable one that inspired …
