Jeff Bezos Announces That Washington Post Opinions Will Now Exclusively Celebrate the Glories of Capitalism

The free market just got a little more so today, thanks to the benevolent decree of one of the richest men who’s ever lived. Seriously though, an email from Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos to the newspaper’s staff is now saying the quiet part out loud: the newspaper will no longer tolerate opinions its billionaire backer disproves of. “I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages,” the email begins. “We are going to be writing every day in support of defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.” “We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others,” Bezos continues. “There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.” The brave new pillars come in the aftermath of a 10 percent drop …

Palestinians celebrate their return to northern Gaza after 15 months of war

Palestinians celebrate their return to northern Gaza after 15 months of war

WADI GAZA, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians streamed into Gaza’s most heavily destroyed area on Monday after Israel opened the north for the first time since the early weeks of the war with Hamas, a dramatic reversal of their exodus 15 months ago. As a fragile ceasefire held into a second week, Israel was told by Hamas that eight of the hostages to be freed during the deal’s first phase are dead. Joyous crowds of Palestinians, some holding babies or pushing wheelchairs, walked along a seaside road all day and into the night, carrying bedrolls, bottles of water and other belongings. Armed and masked Hamas fighters flashed a victory sign. The crowd was watched over by Israeli tanks on a nearby hill. The United Nations said over 200,000 people were observed moving north on Monday morning. Palestinians who have been sheltering in squalid tent camps and former schools are eager to return to their homes — even though they are likely damaged or destroyed. Many had feared that Israel would make …

UFC champ Jon Jones, 49ers star Nick Bosa and other athletes celebrate with ‘Trump Dance’

UFC champ Jon Jones, 49ers star Nick Bosa and other athletes celebrate with ‘Trump Dance’

A month after Donald Trump danced spontaneously at a political rally, the moves have made their way to sporting events around the country. After two attendees fainted at an Oct. 15 rally in Pennsylvania, Trump ended his remarks, saying: “Let’s just listen to music. Who the hell wants to hear questions?” He then danced for roughly 40 minutes, according to reporters at the rally. The moves remained solely in the world of politics as an unexpected moment in the run-up to the election until recently, after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to return for his second stint in office. San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa celebrated a sack with teammates in a game at Tampa Bay on Nov. 10. Asked what inspired the dance, Bosa told reporters, “I think you know the answer to that question,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “All the guys wanted me to do it. I wasn’t even going to do it, but the boys reminded me. And it was fun.” It was not the first time Bosa this …

It is hoped the hubs will help charities like FareShare and the Felix Project to support communities in need. Charles will tour the new facility, and take a look at a newly installed industrial freezer, which will increase capacity by 400 per cent, improving the charity’s ability to preserve more surplus food. It comes as Queen Camilla said she is “getting much better” as she arrived at a Booker Prize reception in her first public engagement since falling ill with …

Leeches are making a medical comeback – here’s why we should celebrate it

Leeches are making a medical comeback – here’s why we should celebrate it

As we tidy away the Dracula capes and glow-in-the-dark plastic fangs for another winter, one notorious blood sucker has had a particularly good year. For the first time the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis has been bred in captivity at London zoo, part of a longer-term project to help this fascinating if unloved creature. Once widespread in the UK, the medicinal leech is now rare due mainly to habitat loss and historic collecting for medical use. In Ireland, the leech was driven to extinction in the 19th century. Their vulnerability is recognised in international conventions and biodiversity audits. You may have heard about leeches being used indiscriminately to treat all kinds of illnesses, from cancer to mental illness in the 19th century. The discrediting of general “bleeding” as a treatment for everything from hysteria to syphilis in the 19th century largely put an end to this history. However, in 1884 leech saliva was identified as an anticoagulant, called hirodine. Surgeons still use leeches to improve the success rates of surgery, such as when reattaching severed fingers …

Saturday night’s episode saw a number of this year’s contestants impress on the dancefloor with three of them winning 10s for their routines. They included EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick — who is beginning to look like a serious contender for the Glitterball trophy — and Sarah Hadland, who spectacularly recovered from an early mishap to deliver a dramatic performance. The third was Tasha Ghouri, who has consistently pulled off high-scoring routines. But it’s a celebrity closer to the bottom of the leaderboard who has the most to celebrate. Prior to Saturday night’s show, Sam Quek had been struggling to make her mark on the competition and last week, she was left …

What Ancient Rituals Do We Still Celebrate at Halloween?

What Ancient Rituals Do We Still Celebrate at Halloween?

Some of the most iconic features of modern Halloween traditions can be traced back to ancient rituals. The most influential of these appears to be the Celtic feast day, Samhain. However, alongside the date itself, the customs associated with the day including trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and apple bobbing, all have roots in ancient beliefs and practices.   The Feast of Samhain Modern-day revelers celebrate Samhain. Source: National Heritage Center   The Celtic calendar (influenced by the pastoral and agricultural year) began on November 1st. Traditionally, this was marked by the great feast of Samhain. Coinciding with the end of harvest season, livestock would be slaughtered and great bonfires lit. The association with the supernatural of modern Halloween festivities may also hark back to the tradition of ancient burial mounds being opened and spirits (aos si) were believed to walk the earth.   There are records of food being left as offerings and places being set at dinner for departed family members. In the 9th century, the western church endorsed Samhain renaming November 1st ‘All …
