If you’re raging that ‘Netflix made Alexander the Great gay’, it’s time to learn some LGBTQ+ history | Matt Cain

If you’re raging that ‘Netflix made Alexander the Great gay’, it’s time to learn some LGBTQ+ history | Matt Cain

At the start of this LGBT+ History Month, Netflix unveiled its new series about Alexander the Great, only to see complaints that the streaming service had “turned him gay”. When these drew the response that Alexander is widely believed to have had same-sex relationships, a typical reply was that this was “unproven speculation”. As a patron of LGBT+ History Month, I see this as an opportunity to argue for the importance of knowing our queer history. For centuries, LGBTQ+ history has been wiped from the record. Oppressors have found it all too easy to deny our existence because in most of the world – for most of history – our lives have had to be led in secret. Exposure could lead to familial rejection, social and professional ruin, imprisonment, torture and even execution. Any evidence of queer lives that did exist was often destroyed, sometimes by descendants keen to protect reputations. The Renaissance artist Michelangelo, for example, was known to have had several relationships with men, but burned all his papers before he died. And …

So Pope Francis has deigned to ‘bless’ gay marriages? That’s not a blessing, it’s an insult | Matt Cain

On the day I celebrated the first anniversary of my wedding, Pope Francis announced his “conditional approval” for Catholic priests to bless same-sex marriages – under certain circumstances – although he was keen to add that these blessings should not be seen as validation of same-sex relationships. “It will be possible to bless same-sex couples but without any type of ritualisation or offering the impression of a marriage,” the Church announced in a report published on Vatican News, adding that “the blessing does not signify approval of the union”. In the eyes of the Catholic church, it seems, queer love is still a sin. Well, you can stick your blessing, Pope Francis. It’s a fig leaf, a PR exercise, a means of laundering your prejudice to make it seem like a step towards acceptance. I was brought up Catholic, went to Catholic schools and mass every Sunday, and served as an altar boy for years. From an early age I also knew I was gay. But some of my teachers made me believe that being …

I told people I was from Greater Manchester, not Bolton – but I got over it. Why can’t the university? | Matt Cain

I’m proud to be from Bolton. There were days in the past when I never thought I’d say that. Because when I was growing up, in the 1980s, I used to hate Bolton. It wasn’t the most accepting or nurturing place for a sensitive, creative, gay child like me. I became convinced that in order to become the person I was meant to be, I had to get out. Manchester became my escape, my salvation. As a city with a much bigger population, it seemed to welcome minorities. It had a thriving arts and music scene and was a hub for the national media. Crucially, for a bullied and lost queer teen like me, it had the Gay Village. To the dismay of my proudly Lancastrian parents, I started to tell people I was from Greater Manchester, the county to which Bolton belonged after the boundaries were redrawn in 1974, a few months before I was born. So I fully understand why the University of Bolton has applied to change its name to the University …
