Ian McShane: ‘When I was about to get it on with Richard Burton, he said I reminded him of Elizabeth’ | Film

Which of the so-called serious actors – Richard Burton, John Hurt, Oliver Reed etc – that you worked with were the funniest? Kellysahero1970Oli. We did Sitting Target together. I knew him before that and we had a good time together. The trouble was he became inclined to be a bit of a bully when he drank, but he was charming most of the time. Richard was terrific. I think he was very underrated when we did Villain and I played his bisexual driver fixer, Wolfie. There’s the infamous scene where we’re about to get it on and he looked at me and said: “I’m very glad you’re playing this part.” I said: “Really, Richard?” He said: “Yes, because you remind me of Elizabeth.” I said: “Well, that’s nice.” Most modern actors take themselves too seriously. Keanu [Reeves, McShane’s John Wick co-star] is one of the most wonderful human beings I’ve ever met. Keanu is by no stretch of the imagination a ball of fun, but he’s seriously sensitive and great to work with. Whose idea …

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Tim Burton has revealed that his long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, was inspired by his own journey “from cool teenager to lame adult”. The original 1988 film, which has become a cult favourite, followed the recently deceased Maitlands (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) as they recruit the demon Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to try and rid their former home of the Deetz family (Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder). The sequel, set to be released later this year on 5 September, will pick up the story decades later following a death in the family. “That’s all I will say,” Burton told Entertainment Weekly in a new interview. “There’s something that happens that sets things in motion.” The Edward Scissorhands director, 65, told the magazine that getting Keaton back into the iconic costume and makeup was “a weird out-of-body experience”. “He just got back into it,” Burton said. “It was …

LeVar Burton Responds to Book Bans with “Reading Rainbow” Video

Book bans have been on the rise since early 2021, with significant increases in recorded instances each year since. Freedom to read advocates, library workers, educators, publishers, and celebrities have lent their voices, time, and energy into not only raising awareness about the problem but also into ending it. On a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, beloved book lover LeVar Burton shared a video to help in spreading the word. Taking after the opening sequence to Reading Rainbow, the video highlights books that have been challenged throughout recent American history. While not all of the titles included in the sequence are those under fire now–the books being targeted are primarily by and about people of color and queer people–the reach of this video is important, as is the visual element showcasing how book bans immediately and directly impact young people. Moreover, the video emphasizes the absurdity of book bans in general. This is seen in highlighting the recent challenge to a title in Alabama because the author’s last name is Gay. Burton has been …

Finding out who you are and what your ancestry looks like can be a complicated journey for African Americans in the United States, especially for actor LeVar Burton. On the latest episode of the popular PBS series “Finding Your Roots,” Burton discovered a hidden family secret: one of his ancestors was a white Confederate soldier, NBC News reported. Self-Made by Tara Isabella Burton review – selfie society | Society books

What do a 41-minute sex tape featuring a little-known personal stylist and a sombre self-portrait in oils by the Renaissance polymath Albrecht Dürer have in common? According to a compelling new study of the ways in which we see ourselves and attempt to shape how we’re seen by others, they are both masterpieces not just of self-promotion, but self-creation. Kim Kardashian, Superstar – as the tape became known – and Dürer’s Self-Portrait at 28 are controversial statements of their subjects’ fame worthiness and magnetism; both were successfully parlayed into real-life celebrity and riches. The eye-opening comparison is typical of Self-Made, US cultural critic Tara Isabella Burton’s fun, insightful romp through an identity parade of geniuses, dandies, charlatans, moguls and film stars. It’s a journey that culminates in the billions of us with smartphone cameras and social media accounts. Today’s influencers have two historical ancestors, Burton argues: the ‘natural aristocrat’ and the ‘self-made man’ Burton is a scholar of religion in its broadest sense. Her previous book, Strange Rites, unpacked the ways in which people stubbornly …
